Karkala, Oct 27: In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old engineering student drowned after he went for a swim with his friends here at Jomlu Teertha in Chara here on Friday October 26.

The deceased has been identified as Gladson D’Silva (20), son of Gilbert D’Silva from Karkada in Saligrama.

Gladson was a third year engineering student at Canara College, Mangalore.

On Friday, Gladson along with four of his friends had been to Jomlu Teertha (Sita River) for a swim. At around 11 am all the friends sat on the banks of the river to eat the snacks which they had brought along.

Meanwhile, Gladson said that he would go for a swim and got into the river. Sources close to his friends said that he slipped in the water and drowned. His friends threw a wooden log into the river to rescue him but their efforts went in vain.

Gladson belonged to a poor family. His father is a daily wager and with difficulty has managed to provide education to his children. Gladson had secured ranks in SSLC and PUC and thus got a seat in engineering.

He is survived by his parents and two sisters.

With this, the death toll at Jomlu Teertha has raised to more than 10. The place has also come to be known for immoral activities and hence it should be prohibited, said locals.

A case has been registered at Hebri police station.
