Mangalore: Honesty at its Best - Auto Driver Returns Bag Containing Rs 8 Lac

Mangalore, Oct 30: Mangalore may often be in the news for the wrong reasons. Everytime there is any negative news in Mangalore, it gets huge publicity and immense response from all corners.

But there are people who make a difference through their actions and make the city a beautiful place. And their news deserves as much, if not more, public attention, for, by their gestures they prove that humanity is still a virtue in a city marred by incidents of violence.

Shekar Devadiga, an auto driver by profession, could have made his life out of the Rs 8 lac in the bag he found on the passenger seat of his auto rickshaw. Instead, he went straight to the traffic police at Jyothi and surrendered the bag.

The incident was reported here on Tuesday October 30. Shekar was on his usual rounds, beginning the day from Kadri Temple as per routine. By the time he found the bag, he had already ferried passengers twice since morning.

The second round of passengers, two women and a child, had hired his auto (KA 19 A 7738) from Hampankatta to Kaprigudda where they stay. They paid the fare and alighted, and Shekar went on his way.

However, a few minutes later he realised that a bag had been left behind by one of his passengers in the backseat of his auto rickshaw. Without a second thought and without wasting any time, he approached the Jyothi traffic police and handed over the bag and its contents, which included two mobile phones.

Meanwhile, the police control room had recieved a message that a bag containing Rs 8 lac in cash had gone missing. Suspecting that it may be the same bag, the traffic police directed Shekar to Pandeshwar police, where the person who had complained about the missing bag was also called.

The bag belonged to Shahid Sheikh from Kolkata. He had come to visit Shameer of Kaprigudda two days back with his family to purchase a flat in the city. On the day of the incident, Shameer's wife and Shahid's wife along with a child had hired Shekar's auto, carrying the cash meant for the purchase of the property. On finding the bag, the relieved family promised to help and reward Shekar.

Shekar is married to Kamalakshi, and the couple has two children - daughter Reshma, who is pursuing engineering, and Karthik, who is in second year BCom.

On the request of several readers, Shekar Devdiga's address and contact number are given below. Shekar does not have a mobile number, and the one given here belongs to his brother Vasanth.

    Hats off to Mr. Devadiga, this earth is still saved by God because of these wonderfull people. Few years back my wife booked a Auto to deliver food to our labourers working in field. She kept the auto waiting, left her purse in auto n went to keep the food in shed. When she returned back to pay fare, she found that Rs. 4000 is missing, which she kept in purse to pay wages. Driver refused to accept that, he took the the money. Still she thought he might be very badly in need of money n kept quiet. But here is a man who is a genuine n did justice to his profession.

    Certain moments in human life are very prominent and critical. On a particular moment, a simple act can take a person to the sky high or make him to perish (like snake and ladder). But the audience are same, to comment positive or negative.

    If he wished, he could have kept that treasure. Perhaps our donations degrade him. In fact, his right action opened our eyes, by showing how respectful and praiseworthy is the honesty and humbleness. Good comments and respect only is a great gift and satisfaction for him. Any way, he will get his suitable reward from Almighty God. A good certificate is the eligibility to apply for a good job.

    @Kamal Taiyyeb, Mangalore
    Yes I do agree with your comments.Good and bad things co-exist in each and every part of the world,not only limited to Mangalore or Bangalore.Everywhere there are good people and bad people.But in this material world it is hard to believe that somebody is getting back his/her lost item for which they already lost hope.Mr.Shekar Devadiga-an Auto Driver has proved that honesty is still alive by returning the bag containing 8 lacs to police station and in return the same has reached safely to actual/real claimant/owner of the bag intact without landing in the hand of miscreants.

    He could have made his life out of 8 lacs he has got.But he didn't do it coz he is not greed for money but greed for his honesty.As I am belongs to his community/caste I remember one thing that once in one of our opening ceremonies of our Devadiga Bhavn in Mumbai,Nerul our respected/honorable Dharmaadhikari sree Veerendra Heggadeji said Devadiga means Devaranny aadisuvavaru that means very close to God,very honest,peace loving people and dependable.I am not boasting here but this is the fact here.Mr.Shekar Devadiga has really proved our classic example today.Hats off to Mr.Devadiga.

    Being an auto Driver it is not a easy task to give enough education to his children.That shows how desciplined he is?Rest of the greedy people must learn lesson from him.May Almighty God in his everlasting Mercy grant you and your family a longlife,health,wealth,peace,prosperity and more over bright future.Definitely your honesty will be rewarded in a bigger way.Lord Kadri Manjunatheshwara is always with you and bless you & your family today,tomorrow and always.Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours.Best of Luck Mr.Devadiga.You made not only Devadigas but also all the Mangaloreans Proud with this act/honesty.Honesty does not have caste,religion,creed,language,colour.It only speaks HONESTY,HONESTY AND HONESTY.

AS PER GULF NEWS, RECENTLY A PAKISTANI DRIVER IN DUBAI FOUND USD 100,000 IN HIS TAXI AND RETURNED IT TO ITS SAUDI PASSENGER BUT GOT A REWARD OF JUST AED 10.00 (EQUAL TO USD 2.75) THIS IS A SIMILAR INCIDENT AND THOUGHT OF MENTIONING IN THIS FORUM.
