Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (VM)

Karkala, Oct 31: Better late than never, even if that 'late' happens to be as much as two decades.

In an unusual case of crime and punishment, where the crime was a theft that took place 21 years ago, the police on Tuesday October 30 arrested an accused who was absconding all these years.

The arrested is identified as Hassan, a resident of Karnad in Mulky. He was arrested in Cheruvathur in Kerala on Tuesday.

Hassan is said to be involved in a theft case at Kukkundur where he and his accomplices alleged splashed chilly powder on Munnur Ahmed from Banglagudde and looted Rs 9,000.

The incident had taken place on August 4, 1991.

Hassan accompanied by four others who were arrested earlier. Among them Abdul Rehman from Mangalore and Mohiddin from Cherkatte were absconding, and were arrested last month by the Kerala police.

Ismail from Bajagoli and Mohammed Rafiq from Bajpe were arrested soon after the incident and later released on bail.

The investigation was carried out under the guidance of Karkala DySP Jayanth Shetty. Hassan was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

We have to appreciate the Karkala Police Station for safeguarding the case file for more than 7,665 days (i.e. 21 Years x 365 days excluding leap years extra days). Where as in Mumbai all case files of Adarsh Scam gutted in fire though it was safely kept in Home Minister's Office at Mantralaya recently. Bofors case files were destroyed after Kargil war since Bofors Guns found very suitable and Vadra case files were rectified and recognized by Haryana Government recently. Only Reddys’ Yeddys’ and Gadkaris’ files are laminated with fire proof and water proof material to keep it in UPA Museums donated by DLF Developers sprayed with saffron colour
