Mangalore, Oct 31: After a long wait, undertrials at the overcrowded district sub jail were finally shifted to the new jail building here on Wednesday October 31.

Due to the crowded jail cells, fights among the undertrials had become common, which prompted the jailers to shift some of the prisoners to the new building located next to the current sub jail.

The old jail was built during the British rule and does not have modern security systems. In addition, jail fights and entry of criminals were on th rise. The old jail has a capacity of only 150 prisoners, but presently it is overcrowded with 290 inmates.

The department of prison was allocated Rs 6 crore for a new facility where power and water supply await completion. During the shift operation, policemen were deployed in large numbers to ensure security.

Several policemen under the guidance of M C Vishwanathaiah, DIG monitored the operation.

Prior to the shifting of jail inmates, Vishwanathaiah had examined the new sub jail.

So many negative comments about prisoners and convicts here . Dear Readers , please understand all are not criminals , there are framed innocents too. Also law is high partial towards poor , which takes away rights to defend against any alleged crime . Lawyers come with a price and bails needs surity of bonds. Peaple with bigger crimes , rich and powerfull hardly find themselves in prison. /Better sanitation and food........Emergency medical facilities in case of prison violence ........ Access to media like papers and magazines .........shielding of weak from seasoned criminals .........also criminals access to education ( heard something about distance education even MBA , in some of jails ) .......they should allowed to mingle with their families once a week , access to phone and parole in case of emrgency.......and lastly period of parole should b added into persons jail term .....these r not too much to ask . Its a basic human rights.

They should introduce cottage industries in side the jail, so the occupants will be busy and realize the fruit of labour and when they come out of the jail they may be transformed as good citizens.
