Mangalore, Oct 31: In a tragic incident, an elderly woman was killed just after she alighted from a city bus here on Wednesday October 31.

The deceased has been identified as Veronica Pinto (72), a resident of Saripalla in Kulshekar and wife of the late Antony John Pinto.

It is said that she was returning from a Mass at Nagori church, offered on the occasion of the death anniversary of her husband's brother, when the accident took place.

The accident occured at Kankanady. Veronica had just got down from the bus to cross the road when the bus hit her.

She was rushed to the hospital where she breathed her last.

The bus Rajkumar (KA 19 C 9829) was plying from State Bank.

Veronica's handbag was recovered from the spot in which the police found Rs 8,900 in cash, a mobile phone and a chain.

Veronica is survived by two sons and a daughter. She was the mother-in-law of JD(S) leader Sushil Noronha.

Kadri police are investigating.

May her soul rest in peace. As usual mangalore traffic police are controlling traffic after the accident. In their view, controlling traffic is just watching traffic. They only know to blow a whistle and move hands side ways in their uniform and loot people. If they know the mangalore road map they are really great. But i don't think they know. What a disgrace of Mangalore traffic police.

No bus driver or Truck drivers have the habit of checking the side mirror before mooving the vehicle.
Most of the Vehicles they don't even have the side mirror too,
RTO should open eyes and made it compulsory for all Vehicles.

May her soul rest in peace . Its very painfull for any family , to accept the loss of elderly. Public transport systems like roads and buses r very bad towards senior citizens , often resulting in accidents. Peaple should be aware about senior peaple , foot bridges , cross over,s should be in place. Buses should take care when elderly alight or board the bus. Golden ornaments and heavy cashes should be strictly avoided if they travel alone .

The accident reflects the inaction of the city administration. Instead of making a proper bus stand on the side of the road, the buses were made to enter the ground (incomplete road work is seen everywhere in the city). Sometimes a PCR used to be parked at the earlier bus stand as BERCHAPPA to make the buses turn to the ground. Clearly, the politicians and bureaucrats (corporator and DC)are to blame for the incident. But I'm sure neither will learn their lessons. Perhaps the DC should walk to his office instead of using his official transport to know the effects of his disregard for the taxpayer. But sadly, the funds allocated for the said civil works would have already been pocketed by the powers that be. Moreover, buses coming from Thokkottu stop opposite Kankanady restaurant causing blockage behind them despite the bus stand being on the western side of the circle, but even police (SIs included) on duty at the Kankanady circle turn a blind eye to the violation of traffic rules.
