Mangalore, Nov 1: The district Rajyotsava celebrations on Thursday November 1 were marred by protests by members of Students Federation of India (SFI) who barged into Nehru Maidan expressing their angst over the proposal to close Kannada medium schools in the state.

On Monday October 29, the SFI had warned that it would not allow Rajyotsava celebrations in the district, in protest against the report by Prof Govinda, vice-chancellor of a Delhi university, recommending closure of 12,740 government Kannada medium schools in the state.

On Thursday, just as district incharge minister C T Ravi began his Rajyotsava address, the activists barged inside the ground holding posters and shouting slogans.

The activists were stopped by the police and taken away. They were later taken into custody.

After the brief disruption, the ceremony resumed.

C T Ravi referred to the SFI protest and said though everyone has a right to protest, doing so on a day like this (Kannada Rajyotsava) was wrong.

"Without students schools cannot run. The government cannot do anything if there are no students. The SFI has never been concerned about Kannada," he said, assuring that discussions will be held on the matter.

Mini Vidhana Soudha in Mangalore

C T Ravi said that a mini Vidhana Soudha will be built in Mangalore at a cost of Rs 4 crore. Also, government Lady Goschen hospital in the city will be developed at a cost of Rs 21 crore, with the help of MRPL.

Several other development projects have been undertaken for the district like 3D theatre to be set up at Pilikula at Rs 24.5 crore, hanging bridge from Sulthan Battery to Tannir Bavi worth Rs 12 crore, animal husbandry college in Koila in Puttur, 400 meter synthetic track at Mangala stadium worth Rs 3.6 crore, and so on. Tender has been called for the construction of district drama theater worth Rs 15 crore, he said.

Speaking further on Kannada, he said it is not only a language of understanding but is also a language to be proud of.

"The government has introduced various schemes for the welfare of poor, students, farmers and various others like loans with less interest, 108 ambulance services, Bhagya Laxmi Yojana and others," he said.

Importance has been given to Kannada language in various ways like job reservation for people who persue their education in Kannada, 100 percent utilization of Kannada language in administration, pension to Kannada scholars, funds to Kannada Sahitya sammelana and many others, said Ravi.

A colourful march past was held by 14 groups including civil police, traffic police, fire brigade, NCC, Air and Army wings, Guides, and DK police band. C T Ravi recieved the guard of honour in an open jeep parade.

On the occasion, district Rajyotsava Awards were conferred on 19 personalities, and eight children were honoured for their achievements in various fields. The children felicitated were Laxmi Prasad K Achar and Manmitha M K (art), K Akhila and Gautami C S (culture), Celia Amith and Surin M U (sports) and Karthik Bhat and Sridevi (academics).

Ravi handed over cloth bags on the occasion to symbolically mark the ban on plastics in the taluk. A Sthree Shakti self-help group vehicle with handicrafts and others things prepared by them was also launched.

Legislative assembly deputy speaker Yogish Bhat, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA U T Khader, MLC Monappa Bhandary, DC Channappa Gowda, ZP CEO K N Vijayprakash, city police commissioner Manish Karbikar, SP Abhishek Goyal, IGP (western range) Pratap Reddy, Koragappa Nayak, deputy mayor Amithakala and others were present.

Earlier, a rally was held from Mangala Stadium to Nehru Maidan to mark the ban on plastic in the taluk. The rally was flagged off by C T Ravi.

today even kannadaigas do not send their children to kannada schools. why should tuluvas and konkanas study in kannada. in the first place tulunadu people must stop learning kannada which is an alien language to tuluvas and konkanas and by studying kannada, today we do not ever get a job. instead, tuluvas and konkanas must study in english medium with second language as tulu and konknani. kannada should be rejected as it is not our language. may kannada rest in peace. ham in tulunadu, tulunadu rajyotsava should be celebrated instead of kannada rajyotsava. tulu nadu should become a separate state to free ourselves from these linguistic fanatics who impose their language and culture on our innocent tulunadu people

If there are no children for Kannada medium schools, what do you expect the government to do? In our place, the Kannada medium schools are given food during the day free of charge. Officials give surprise visits to ensure that the quality of the food is very good. In spite of these facilities, the parents have put their children in English medium school. What the government needs to do is increase the Kannada subjects from 1 to 2 or 3 in English medium schools. We need to foster Kannada in Karnataka otherwise, we will be strangers in our own land.

The problem is not bcoz of people or politicians,The problem is karnataka is the only state in India where there are atleast 5 languages. If u come across Karwar, udupi dakshina kannada Kodagu.
they all have their own language. and most of these district they dont speak in kannada they speak in their own language
DK speak in Tulu. Udupi Speaks in tulu. coorg speaks in Coorgi karwar UK Speak in Konkani.
So this is the difference why kannada medium is disappearing.

What is the use of studying in Kannada medium, studying Kannada language is acceptable and most important, more than 50% of Kannadigas are working in abroad and other states of India. Most of the companies, ports, railways, small scale industries and large scale industries are captured by neighboring states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu and other states too. We studied in Kannada Medium and struggle a lot to get job in Karnataka itself but unfortunately it was just dream only to get jobs in Karnataka. Thanks to God now we are working in Middle East who will ask about Kannada in other than Karnataka state then what is the use of studying in Kannada medium. Studying Kannada language is acceptable and most important but studying in Kannada medium is no use at all in this computer age and 21st century because almost all the transactions/communication even in Karnataka also using English technical words example scientists, doctors, engineers and many more professions. Simply these politicians are making drama only their children are studying in Western countries. JAI HO KARNATAKA

Kannada Medium schools are struggling for students. As Lydia Lobo said, everyone in DK want their child to attend English Medium.
Let all the protesters and their supporters send their children to Kannada schools. Practice instead of preaching.

Mr. CT Ravi please try to clean garbage from Bangalore city then talk about mini vidhana soudha in Mangalore, Vidhana Soudha is not so important to Mangaloreans. If you want to do something you have many things to do viz. government hospitals, improve the facilities Lady Goshen & Wenlock hospitals, footpath, roads, and many more things. Do not give false promises. Mangaloreans are smart enough to know which is important and which is not, which is required and which is not required. What about 80000 crores granted from central government. Please clarify this:

Zero tolerance should be shown towards SFI for Anti-Kannada & violent/goondaism act. Let them protest peacefully if they have respect for Kannadigas, Nobody has the moral right to disrupt todays Karnataka Rajyotsava celebration for publicity, political gains! I hope K'taka Police have shown them their door this time in M'lore.

Adamant to teach only Kannada is ridiculous. Those who protest must for once step out of Karnataka and see how difficult it is to even read the boards on local bus/train leave alone communicate and compete to secure a job.

Today, even a sweeper wants to enroll his child in English Medium School because he thinks about the child's future. Remove these frogs in the well who think Kannada is the only language that concurs the communication and corporate world ! All English schools in Karnataka are teaching Kannada as Second Language from 1st standard which is quite sufficient to save Kannada from dying out.

It is such a pain to enter PUC after studying kannada medium. The student face several problems during the transition period between kannada medium high school to english medium college. SFI or any kannada supporters please think ahead and progress Karnataka instead of fighting for Kannada.

Instead of fighting for lost battle, they should try to implement one such lesson in Kannada & Hindi in each English medium School too, so that Kannada language will not die at least in Karnataka. When, being a Parent, we too want English Medium School for our children, then why these vested SFI fighting for? Even their own children too might have opted for English Medium School.
