The protestors barged in as soon as district incharge minister C T Ravi began his speech. They were protesting against the report by Prof Govinda of New Delhi recommending the closure of thousands of Kannada medium schools in the state.

Sources said that the 46 activists including minor students were put behind bars for more than two hours.

Child welfare committee president Asha Nayak too intervened in the matter and spoke to the police.

Reacting to their protest, Asha Nayak said that SFI students have all right to protest against the violation of rights in this democratic country. "I don’t think the students protested so as to disrupt the programme," she said.

It may be recalled that SFI activists had called a press meet on October 29, where they urged the government not to close Kannada medum schools and to reject Prof Govinda’s report which recommends closuse of 12,740 government Kannada medium schools.

In response to the protest, DYFI district president Munir Katipalla said that it is wrong to tag the protestors with criminal offense for raising their voice against the closure of Kannada schools. "This shows the fascist attitude of the administration. The government should soon cancel any plan of closing Kannada schools," he said.

Closure of thousonds of kannada medium schools...! getting one step closer for the extinction of kannada.
Its the right way to protest on the right occasion, which may possibly make govt. think twice before taking the decision. Our state language is going through a bad phase in its own state specially in urban areas where people have inferior complex to speak in kannada!

As our states official language the state should not close the schools ,looks like it is way of getting hold of the real estate .
There are still people who need the Govt schools .Why dont they introduce english in a better way along with kannada, and also lesser the students better for the teachers they can impart better education to the students when they get individual attention.

The police are very quick on filing FIR’s on SFI members. The same police have no interest to arrest the people who protest without permissions and it happens throughout the year. The SFI had announced the protest and the Police have the responsibility of stopping them and keeping them away by creating a barricade at the event. This is police brutality in the name of protecting the event just because CT Ravi is present there. The SFI has all the rights to protest and now the police have all the options to book them under many sections of Indian penal code. The mayor is not present at the event means the so called minister is more important? Or the minister had plans to announce the fund allotments after Vinay Kumar Sorake asked why the state government has not spent the funds sanctioned from centre?
