'Oppn Lying to Farmers over FDI; will get Lokpal Bill Passed Soon'

New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS): Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Sunday attacked opposition parties for "lying" to farmers about foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, saying the UPA government's policy will benefit farmers immensely.

At a massive rally of the Congress party at the Ramlila Ground in the national capital, Rahul Gandhi said the FDI policy of the government would bring in cold storage facilities and food processing centres to farmers, ensuring more profits to them.

"The opposition parties have been lying about the FDI policy to farmers, particularly in Himachal Pradesh (where voting is already underway for the assembly polls)," he said without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"FDI will bring cold storage facilities and food processing centres closer to the farmers. They will immensely benefit from these," he said.

Rahul Gandhi also touched upon the anti-corruption movement in the country, noting that it was the UPA government of the last eight years that brought in the Right to Information Act in 2005 through which people could get any information from the government.

Will get Parliament Nod for Lokpal Bill: Rahul Gandhi

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Sunday promised to get parliament's nod for the UPA government's Lokpal Bill in the coming months, even as he attacked the opposition for stalling the anti-corruption legislation.

"We will get the (Lokpal) bill passed in parliament soon. Wait and watch," Rahul Gandhi assured his party wotrkers at the Congress' massive rally held in support of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's policies at the Ramlila Ground here.

"The opposition stalled the Lokpal Bill in the previous sessions of parliament. But we will bring it again," Rahul Gandhi said.

Touching upon the anti-corruption movement in the country, the young Congress leader said it was the UPA government of the last eight years that brought in the Right to Information Act in 2005 through which people could get any information from the government.

Targeting the opposition parties for what he claimed as "lying" to farmers about foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, Rahul Gandhi said the UPA government's policy will benefit farmers immensely.

He said FDI policy of the government would bring in cold storage facilities and food processing centres to the farmers, thereby ensuring more profits to them.

"The opposition parties have been lying about the FDI policy to the farmers, particularly in Himachal Pradesh (where voting in the assembly polls is underway)," he said without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"The FDI will bring cold storage facilities and food processing centres closer to the farmers. They will immensely benefit from these," he said.

Rahul Gandhi also said that the UPA government, since it came to power in 2004, has worked for bettering the lives of common poeple, brought in schemes such as the rural job guarantee programme that provided employment to millions and waived loans of farmers.

He said the UPA government would in the future too work for the common man with legislations on food security and land acquisition.

"We want to ensure the poor do not go to sleep on empty stomachs. We want to ensure the poor farmers' land is not taken away," he added.

While the opposition parties were against the UPA government's policies for the sake of opposing, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress leadership has "given direction" to the country and the government.

Just ask Rahul only one question that why Manmohan Singh did opposed the FDI idea discussion held by NDA Government then? Coal raw material under Government Subsidy was allotted to few Congress Leaders Coal Mining Companies and purchased the Power in higher rate…. Is it good idea Rahulji? When your Government loot our own natural resources like this, do we need FDI? Do we have sufficient Government body to curb our Leaders Investment in the name of FDI? When entire World looking for Asian Market like India & China to sell their consumer products, will India gain anything from FDI rather than allowing FDI Companies to repatriate profit from India? Oh… Sorry… I asked so many questions which you are not bound to answer and not capable of answering too since you are Indian rejected western educated only

It is very simple that bringing in foreigners is to invest in a huge way. It is not that easy to have in house cold storage and processing plants. FDI will bring boost in the economy. Farmers will get right price for their produce and genuine export market will be created.

Instead of looting the country day in and out, why can't UPA Govt. put up their own cold storage and food processing units for the benefit of the farmers ? what is the need to beg foreigners for that? - Jayarama..

Jayarama...it is because why you left India and went to KSA? You went to KSA for better prospects and for your convenience and in the same way Government is inconvenient for setting up own cold storage or any business as Governement has lot other things to do.
