Hassan Girl Thrashed by Teacher Loses Memory

Hassan, Nov 6 (PTI): In a shocking incident, a class IV student of a government school in Holenarasipur suffered head injury and loss of memory after her teacher threw her out of the classroom for not doing homework, officials said today.

The incident occurred on September 24 when the girl was taken to task for not doing home work given by her teacher Veerabhadrappa. Veerabhadrappa hit her and then threw her out of the classroom and her head hit the ground, Education Department sources said.

The girl, who suffered from severe shock following head injury could not even narrate the incident to her parents, who came to know about it from her classmates, they said.

The girl was shifted to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in Bangalore, where doctors said she suffered shock due to the punishment.

According to sources, the girl cannot remember any incident barring her name now. She is currently undergoing treatment in Shimoga. She is the daughter of the School Development Committee President, M K Devaraj, who reportedly has certain differences with the teacher.

Condemning the teacher's action, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Visweshwara Hegde Kageri said the government will initiate legal action against Veerabhadrappa. "The teacher concerned has already been suspended three days ago. Despite repeated warnings not to resort to corporal punishment, such things are happening. The government will view this seriously," he told reporters.

He said education department officials have been directed to meet the treatment expenses of the girl, who, doctors said, will recover.

There was a time when teachers used to be well respected by students, parents and by the local community. But nowadays we see teachers coming to school drunk, manhandling students or even molesting girl students. These days this profession has lost its glory as a noble profession. Private tutions has become a must apart from attending schools. In Govt run village schools, most of the teachers are without dedication, they join this profession as they are not in a position to get any other job.

Please do not propose "eye for an eye" or tooth for a tooth" for any offence. Our education system has created such teachers and teaching teckniqs. The same minister wants to teach Geetha in schools, instead if tries to teach teachers how to teach humanly, make learning a pleasure then the corporal punishment to children will disappear. Re-orient the teachers and not the fear of punishment.

    WHY WHY AND ONLY WHY?

    THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND UNACCEPTABLE.

BUT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.

ONLY WHEN THINGS COME IN THE OPEN WE KNOW.

NOT ALL ARE AS LUCKY AS TAGORE OR MOTILAL NEHRU TO HAVE CLASSROOM AT HOME.

EDUCATION HAS BECOME A BURDEN ON HAPLESS PARENTS FROM ALL ANGLES.

FAT FEES, DESPERATE TEACHERS, HARROWING TRANSPORT AND WHAT NOT.

THINGS WERE MUCH BETTER IN THE COMPANY OF RUFINA TEACHER AND MULIL TEACHER IN AJJARKAD GOVT SCHOOL IN THE 70'S.

Dear Minister, if the girl recover or does not recover from her present stage, what action will be taken. Now teacher is suspended only. Any other action will be initiated in due course. The parents are sufferers and the child. Can the teacher give back the the days she spent for treatment or the year she lost in IVth Std. Nothing can be returned or compensated. What the child and her parents lost same should be lost by the teacher and his family...
