Mangalore, Nov 7: Journalist Naveen Soorinje who was booked in the infamous attack on home stay in Padil in July this year, has been arrested by the Kankanady police. He was arrested at Padil here on Wednesday November 7 at around 9.45 pm.

Soorinje, a journalist with a Kannada news channel, was returning from Sullia after covering a JD(S) convention by Kumaraswamy, when the arrest took place. He was with a team of four others including reporters and cameramen.

Kankanady police led by inspector Ravish Nayak intersected the team's car at Padil junction and took Naveen Soorinje into custody.

He was then produced before judge Renuka Raikar at her residence.

On July 28 this year, Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists had attacked a group of boys and girls who were celebrating a birthday at Morning Mist Home Stay in Padil. The attack was recorded on video by Naveen Soorinje, for which he was booked. However, Soorinje had maintained that he had tried to contact the police at the time of the incident, and on not recieveing any response, had recorded the attack as 'evidence'. The attack had evoked widescale protests and outrage among the public and 28 were arrested in the case.

More details awaited.

Reshmi, did Mr.Soorinje call police emergency 100 number which he suppose to call? If so, he has done his duty - Lawrence, USA..

We all know how effective is Mangalore police. Like in bollywood, they arrive at the last minute. If our police is efficient then church attacks, attacks on minorities, home stay attack would not have happened. Police are acting like servants of politicians and there is no point in trusting these police. But one thing is sure..Police were forced to arrest those goondas based on video shooting of Naveen Soorinje. If he had not filmed this attack, no one would have been arrested and case would have been dismissed. Hope you know what is happening in church attacks in Mangalore..The whole world saw the cruelty of HJV goons and people came to know about real facts just because of Naveen Soorinje. Journalist has a social responsibility to publish the truth and Naveen Soorinje has published the truth.

Reshmi, did Mr.Soorinje call police emergency 100 number which he suppose to call? If so, he has done his duty.

I have watched the video - a girl trying to cover her face and the goondas were trying to force her to show her face to the camera by hitting and violating her dignity. Even a prostitute doesn't deserve that kind of treatment and only a fool or a wicked minded journalist could videograph such incidents.

Is it not the same journalist who video-taped the beatings of girls at Amnesia Bar and sold his clippings to international media?

Having lived in USA, I am for freedom of press. Freedom should be exercised with due responsibility to fellow citizens. Does anyone know, what harm the journalist have done to those victims by showing their faces in public TV again and again and again!

Tom, Dick and Harry can't be journalists. There should be some standards and qualifications to be one.

Its a sad part that Naveen Soorinje is arrested at Night.Another sad part is that he is sent to the same jail where the Padil attackers are kept. The good news is that the Judge may not ask the police to produce witness from the general public.Naveen Soorinje has previously agreed to be a part of the case and he will assist the case by being in jail or out on bail. The question is whether he called the police or not but why and what made the infamous HJV members molested the girls in front of the camera. Before we ask Naveen why he did not call police we should ask ourselves who we are and who is HJV and who are the girls at the party. Why someone has to prove that he has not called the police when we all know that police is the puppet in the hands if state politics. We all know how the police deal with such calls by people like Naveen. We see the police always arrive only after BD attack the driver and release the cattle and then police arrest the driver in cattle transport case. The same police may deny a permission for cattle transport but label every incident as illegal cattle transport.

If a journalist gets a call from someone saying that he is going to rape and kill a minor girl at Belthangady, what the journalist should do first? Go ahead and video-tape or try to avoid the incident by whatever it takes even by risking his own life - Lawrence India..

Lawrence, in such a case, he should inform the police and police should take action against the rapist. In home stay attack case, Naveen Soorinje called the police and police failed to take action. In such a case, whatelse he could have done? What he did was he started filming the whole incident and based on his filming, police arrested the goondas. If Naveen Soorinje didn't film the attack, then all attackers would have been roaming on the streets of Mangalore and cause more trouble in Mangalore.

We the common man have poor memory. If you look back at the initial news of this whole episode, (even on Daiji: "Mangalore: Hindu Activists barge into party at resort and thrash girls), its clear that Naveen acompaneied the goons to highlight their achievement of "protectors of Indian culture" and to gain personal publicity. It all took a u turn when the facts became evident that the boys and girls were just enjoying a birthday party. Its just a case of intentions backfiring. What Naveen recorded was not for the purpose of judicial evidence but for mass selling to the media for cheap publicity. Refresh your memories readers, open your eyes and wake up, because common man like the victims of this attack are still suffering. I have nothing but my empathis to them.

2.Sandalwood smuggler Veerappan was interviewed by Tamil Journalists in the forest when three states police dept searching for him
3.Arundati Roy interviewed Naxalite leaders in the dense forest and full page article was published in Outlook.Within one week Naxalites killed 70 army jawans.Govt of India didn't arrest Arundati Roy..

Mr. Soorinje, if he was honest, had all the opportunities to avoid the attack on those innocent girls at the Homestay - Lawrence USA

Lawrence, it is easy to comment. How can you fight with 40 drunkard, uncivilized goons? As per Naveen, he called the police but police arrived at the scene at the last minute. If you are alone, what you would have done? Believe me, single person cannot fight with these 40 goons. It is possible only in movies where one hero can handle 40 goons. This home stay attack incident came to light because of Naveen Soorine. Otherwise those arrested so far would not have been in the jail. Police action now also suspicious. Why Naveen is arrested after such a long time? Why didn't they arrest him earlier if he is involved in the attack? The arrest of Naveen Soorinje is political conspiracy. Karnataka has become goonda raaj especially after BJP came into power.

Naveen needs to explain how come goondas have his phone number on their speed dial list.

Naveen makes all the right noise about Hindutva terror but it is clear from the body language displayed during attack that he has cozy relationship with these thugs.

How come these thugs knew only to call Naveen out of hundred odd journalists present in Mangalore?

Police should resist all pressure from media on this issue and expose relationship between thugs and fake journalists like Naveen.

Guys, just hold on. The report we had seen in the televisions is the edited one. I can see clearly in Naveens face, he has confidence and he is going to give a big explosion. I think he will release the unedited version of his shot to the television and there will be something good or bad waiting to happen in the mangalore.

    innocent people will go in.

    Good job police.

Dear police pls. give this case to Crime Branch, crime branch will study report before catch any fish.

i am not blaming local police. local police weak point is they don't have time to investigate one case - they will receive many case in everyday.

People should be wise enough to judge their own actions prior to. Each action has merits and demerits criterias. Here, merit being social evilness was exposed demerit being but at the cost of police and worldwide watching trashing the girls modeling Mangalore being a Talibian society.

Mr. Naveen, no doubt has given the most crucial evidence in regards to the home stay attack. Commendable. However, I will never buy his story that he tried to stop the attackers and that he tried calling the cops but to no avail and so on.
He likes it or not, he is doing a job that binds him with so much of social and moral responsibilities, he must be proud that he is doing a job that brings out the truth.
I am sure that if he is guilty at all, he will be carrying that burden of guilt and shame for the rest of his life.If he is really guilty of that, May God give him what is due, let no man judge another man. However, if he is not guilty, let him be given the respect he rightly deserves.

hey guys dont get too emotional. There cant be different laws to people working for the press. The man wanted to gain publicity for himself and the channel he worked. Do u believe he is honest and did it for public good. Be serious man. Shame on the reporter who kept quiet and told his men to keep shooting and colluded with the goons who attacked the girls. What a travesty when Subhash Pai says we need to save the reporter

The girls allegedly got molested once, media molested them emotionally for weeks together by repeating the telecast of molestation.
Whether it was the molestation for moral policing or for TRP or selling video clips to national media - only court proceedings will decide. Fact remains that Mr Soorinje is responsible for permanent mental scarring of those molested.

If Karnataka people say we are law abiding citizens, then they have to support all for good cause and condemn all for wrong doing. In this case starting from Owner of the house, attackers, occupiers & journalists too have some responsibility to share the attack on “Morning Mist”. Then why we have to blame BJP or Police only? Well done Police, keep your actions intact irrespective of so many criticisms since we all know whom they are and why they are creating problem?

What transpired now the Mangalore Police to arrest Mr. Naveen Soorinnje at this juncture of time?

Just for "Exposing" communal outfits, taking law into their hands?

If at all he has taken money from Television News Channels for TRP's as alleged by some of the comments made on Daijiworld website, then we need to wait before passing any comments. I am sure Mr.Naveen you will come out clean from this Home Stay Attack episode unless money has changed hands for "Cheap Publicity".

"Crooks" cannot stand in front of a honest journalist who is fighting for "Justice". We are with you Mr.Naveen.

Mr. Soorinje, if he was honest, had all the opportunities to avoid the attack on those innocent girls at the Homestay. As a man and a journalist, he had a upper hand to convince those goondas who called him to videograph the beatings of the girls. Journalist should follow certain ethics in their profession over the publicity and money.

If I were in his position, I would provide the video to the police to take action first. If the police failed to take action, then I would broadcast it to the general public.

Sooringe did not have a good intention and therefore he is guilty.

The entire episode of morning mist is messy , a combo of journalists reached before police...fishy!!. Investigative journalism is good but putting camera inside four walls and barging into peaple privacy is wrong. Media is just going now a days for trp's.

Police are doing their duty, people are here no need of showing over reactions, there was a separate complaint lodged by Louis G Pinto blaming the media for the uncensored video footage. Acting to that police has arrested Mr.Soorinje that's it, & rest of the accused all already behind the bars, so simply blaming the police or Govt no use, If you guys really concerned about Mr.Soorinje then take a protest march towards Louis G Pinto's house....will you guys do that??? of course no!!!!, b'cos he's not belongs to any Hindu Vedike.

Had it not been for Naveen Soorinje, the BJP, Police(BJP Chamchas) and the so called protectors of Indian culture would have kept the entire world in dark about the home stay attack, and destroyed evidence to hush up the case.

Now the evidence is overwhelming they are playing with Naveen, only to add oil to the fire.

Hope many such journalists will bring out all inefficiencies of BJP and corrupt police in Coastal area and all over K'taka.

As many had suggested earlier, Naveen is eligible for an award for his brave and honest journalism.

This incidence should not deter upright journalists in our country.

Then Police Commissioner of Mangalore Seemanth Kumar Singh infact, threatened TV reporter Navin Soorinje to fix him in infamous HOMESTAY ATTACK in Mangalore, Padil..Because, Navin's footage was more aggressive and in fact copied by all national media which threatened Mangalore police's existence in Mangalore.OUR QUESTION IS WHY ONLY NAVIN?THERE WERE DOZENS OF TV REPORTERS AND WHAT MADE NAVIN TO ARREST?This is nothing but misuse of police power and revenge against an hapless TV reporter.Apart from that attack on fourth estate of democracy which should be condemned by democracy loving citizens of KARNATAKA."BJP SARAKARA DA POPIKAALA BAIDND"!!!
