Govt Agrees to Modify Made Snana in Subramanya Temple

Bangalore, Nov 8 (PTI):
The Karnataka government today informed the High Court it would modify the controversial practice of "Made Snana" in Kukke Subramanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district.

The ritual involves devotees rolling over leftovers of food partaken by Brahmins on plantain leaves.

The government, in its response to a PIL seeking a ban on the practice, filed an affidavit in the court, saying it would replace the earlier practice by offering "prasadam" from the sanctum sanctorum on plantain leaves, which would be placed in the outer yard to enable devotees irrespective of caste, to partake of it.

The government also conceded the other prayer of the petitioners, seeking a ban on "Pankthi Bheda" at the temple (discrimination in seating arrangement for partaking food, by assuring that it would not promote, sponsor or permit Pankthi Bheda there.

The division bench, headed by Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen, then disposed of the peititon.

The PIL filed by Nedumamidi Swamy, a seer of the Mutt by the same name in Cikkaballapura and several others, including educationists and rationalists in March this year sought a ban on "Made Snana" and two other connected practices of "Made Seve" and Made Sevane" and also a ban on "Pankthi Bheda" at the above temple.

Perhaps I feal that the Government order or Court Judgement will be not be able to solve this issue. Its Devotees faith & belief which play the primary role. The Madesnana which is seen by Nidumamidi Swami or some Organisations as act of demoralising, is felt by devotees as a auspicious event. Religious Belief & Faith plays plenty of role, & as this event takes place only in few days of the year. The media have been considering the comments by people who neither have performed madesnana nor seen it live. Statements of believers is sidlined by most media. Over years the devotees performing madesnana has increased & that itself shows it is liked by many devotees. I personaly feal that with drastic steps we are suppressing the religious sentiments of devotees. Better leave the choice to devotees, whether to perform or not. Again as it is spoken by media again & again, it is not act of suppression, but performed by devotees irresptective of caste. Eg.: See the last bottom person in the above pic.

Rolling on leaves and healing of skin deceases by these therapy is left to the poor low class people. The one who ate on these leaves made their kin as doctors and specialists and sent them abroad to treat the foreigners.

A good legal step by the Karnataka High Court.

I hope the same should be applied to the Mutts all over Udupi and Karnataka without delay and in its full force.

Discrimination on the basis of caste by upper caste Hindus must be brought to an end in every aspect of life.
