Mangalore, Nov 10: State spokesperson of JD(S), Y S Datta slandered the state government and condemned the arrest of TV journalist Naveen Soorinje.

He was addressing a press meet in the city on Friday November 9.

"Freedom of expression is restrained by the state government in favour of the fundamentalists. This is a planned dodgy to impose and curb on the voice of democracy. Today, I was in Mangalore to discuss electricity issues at Kadur constituency. I was called upon by veteran journalist Dinesh Amin Mattu to study the problem. I also came to know that the police tried to delay the submission of the report to the court inorder to delay the procedure. Immediately, I approached the police commissioner to know about the issue. The police commissioner told me that the report has already been submitted to the court", he said.

"Today, many leftist, developments pro organizations are condemning this act and protesting in the district. The state government is trying to protect the fundamentalists. It is a planned strategy to curtail the system and implement their power and twist the case. The convicted reporter was supposed to be a witness in the case, but now he is fixed as a culprit, booked under clause 395 of IPC section", he added.    

He also spoke against Janardhan Poojary, stating that the congress has no rights to talk about freedom of speech and expression because during the time of emergency, Indira Gandhi had curbed the freedom of press.

"Remember that the state government is trying to impose emergency indirectly and it is a lesson for us by the state government to show that if anyone raises voice against injustice, they will be booked and put behind bars so that no one would raise voice against their fundamentalism", he rebuked. 

MG Hegde, Sushil Noranha, Shashiraj Shetty, Ram Ganesh and Rathnakar Suvarna were present on the occasion.

    Had it not been Mass Media, Cases like Sowjanya Rape and murder, Mist home stay attack, Churches/Prayer Hall attacks, accidents, food adulterations cases etc. would have been hushed up!
    Law enforcing agencies are very weak.
    Strangely this Govt. instead of thanking the Media, who helped to catch culprits and curb violence, arresting Media personalities and persecuting them.
    It implies that Govt. is trying to suppress the Media also to toe their line, like law enforcing agencies do.
