Moscow, Nov 12 (IANS/RIA Novosti): A Jordanian court has sentenced the kingdom's former intelligence chief to 13 years in prison for corruption.
Mohammed al-Dahabi, who headed the intelligence service from 2005 to 2008, was accused of embezzling public funds, money laundering and abuse of office, BBC reported.
The court in Amman ordered the ex-spy chief to pay 21 million Jordanian dinars (about $30 million) in fines to the state.
"You deserve the harshest punishment for being a traitor to the people who trusted you with a government position and state funds," said Judge Nashaat Akhras.
Recent street protests against corruption in Jordan have prompted the Jordanian authorities to take measures to show the seriousness of their efforts to tackle graft and corruption in the country.
