Beltangady: Argument Between Brothers Over Property Issue Ends in Murder

Arun Uppinangady
Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady

Beltangady, Nov 15: In a startling incident, a person allegedly killed his own brother with an iron rod in a fit of rage at Kailara, Barya here on Wednesday November 14 night.

The deceased has been identified as Joachim Sequeira (33), son of the late Anthony Sequeira, a resident of Kailara.

John (L) and Joachim (R)

The accused has been identified as John Sequeira (35), elder brother of Joachim. The accused is married and has a child.

Both of them lived together in the same house, along with their mother.

It is said that on Wedneday night, an argument began between them over a property issue. When the situation got out of hand, an enraged John reportedly hit Joachim on the head with a strong iron rod.

Joachim was immediately rushed to the hospital, but breathed his last on the way.

Joachim was working abroad and had planned to settle down here and start a business. With plans of getting married soon, Joachim was also working as driver.

He had also planned to build a separate house before marriage. This idea had led to trouble between the brothers which ultimately ended in murder.

Their father Anthony Sequeira passed away leaving behind some property to his children. The children too were earning, and had started a plantation in that property and were financially stable enough.

After John got married, the strong bond between the brothershad loosened. Their father's property was the main reason that sparked rivalry between them, sources said.

Admist this rivalry, John felt that it would be improper to get married and live in the same house, as that would lead to further troubles, and hence he had planned to build a new house before his marriage.

He had even made arrangements to build a house very near to the present house, and had even laid foundation stone for it. The fight arose in this regard.

Puttur rural PSI Suresh Kumar, SI Ravi B S and other officers visited the spot and carried out investigations. The accused has been taken into police custody and investigations are going on.

My heart goes out to John and Joachim's mother. She lost her two sons in a matter of hours: one in death, another for criminal prison. As a wife and mother she must have experienced fair share of life's pain and this tragedy in her aging years is an unbearable cross. Her son John's wife too is a mother of a young child. Keeping that in mind, let us pause and stop blaming her with a blind assumption that she could have been the instigator. We do not know the facts of the case. Both these women may have intervened to break the fight. We do not need to add insult to injury by assuming that John's wife could have caused this to happen. What gives us the right to judge others without knowing them? Isn't that sinful?
My heart goes out to both these women and especially for the young child involved. They will forever be called the wife and child of a murderer. What a pity.. Any woman in her right mind will try her best to stop such kind of a heinous crime..
When there is no room for holy spirit in our hearts devil enters in many forms and shapes: drugs, alcohol, extra marital affairs and so on. In this case devil showed up to work in the form of "greed for property" and elder brother let the devil take control of his heart momentarily. Most likely he repents it but it is too late now..

This is a very tragic tale which is very disturbibg. The best thing is parents should never leave any property in the name of children. Let them take the trouble and fetch for themselves. Then only they learn to respect each other. When you get things easily, you lose the value and importance of everything.

Feel very sad to see the pict of the two brothers hugging and now one killed his sibling in a fit of anger!

One main reason people are after property is now the skyrocketing price of real estate which one never thought of maybe a decade ago! What was once only worth a few lacs is worth crores or more so who would not want money in his account?

The biggest mistake parents do is not dividing the property amicably amongst all those who are eligible and it should be done by taking into all involved into confidence!! If not a legally valid will should be made with utmost care of not doing any partiality, and kept safely with a trustworthy person so it immediately takes effect and nobody has a chance to dispute!!

Moreover, as against popular belief I have noticed a no. of family members who have become materially well off and doing well for themselves even sacrificing their own part of the share property to their siblings who have not done much well in life!!

So these problems of hatred arise only because of dying intestate and more due to greed to snatch ones legitimate share over and above his own share!!

Joachim, after commiting this act in a fit of rage has ruined his own family's life in hindsight, he might be surely thinking that giving his brothers share off would have been the most wisest and apt decision for him and the entire family!!

This tragedy is a lesson to all those involved in unfair practice of depriving legitimate heirs of their share in the property in the absence of a will!!

God give Joachim and the family to surmount this tragedy!!

The first choice is to embrace our true relegion, where we can learn, understand and gain more spiritual strenth build up better lives, out of constant personal prayers and reading religious books, specially the Holy Bible. It gives better knowledge to build one's wisdom and we can be always under the fold of God's Spirit. One greedy brother is enough to make the life of others miserable in a family. And as if it is not enough there will be the wives and married off sisters to add fuel to the fire and make the situation worst. As Madam Mabel posted in her comment, what is the use of having property without proper records? (Elders should consult the legal experts and take all children into confidence before dividing their property. And if any rift arises a well wisher of the whole family should be consulted).

It is not the property but the injustice meted out to one that leaves a life long scar. Nothing can be worse for parents than to leave their children as enemies for life for the sake of property.

And there will be some who advocate about our arrival and departure with empty hands. They are the non practicing preachers. If you want to kill them you don't have to do much. Just snatch one rupee from their pocket and run away. They will automatically fall dead.

My heart melts when I look at the above picture. Brothers are supposed to protect each other against enemies. It is not good for those who led them to this situation. They are equally responsible for this death.

The very famous kannada saying HENNU, HONNU, MANNU is the main cause for rivalry among human beings. Siblings who's live like Ram Laksman till they get married become strange enemies once they get married and a HENNU enters their house and then starts mis-understandings and fights for HONNU AND MANNU in the family in most of the cases if not everywhere. Parents should write a will in such a way that, their children's will get their share in property only after their death and that is too only for those children's who looked after them well when they were alive.

First blood was spilled on this earth by jealousy- by Abel of Cain, it has continued even now.
    Whom to blame?
Brothers or their mother or their diseased father who couldn't sort out the issue of share when he was alive.
Rational thinking persons could have approached their mother, in case she couldn't sort the difference amicably then they could have approached their elders from family or community.
They could have approached their Parish Priest. If dissatisfied then they could have taken legal alternatives which are cumbersome & take one's life time to be blamed here as well.
Selfishness & Ego got out of hand here & Evil is the Victor as their mother & one brother's wife will have to bear the consequences in future. The Stigma of murder is very hard to erase.

When we die we cannot carry any wealth be it movable or movable property but there is very something valuable we will carry after our death "RELATIONSHIP". We have in our own way which even the almighty never expected, converted this IMMOVABLE EARTH into a commercial and business deal. Olden days Joint family was always a pleasure to live but today it is different, we need to have our own house, own property and everything own and want nobody even our own kith and kin to be a part of it. Many issues can be related but it is time that people give prime importance to relationship that will bring so much happiness to mind and body. Very unfortunate incident. Property matters brings the enemity between own brothers. May God give enough strength to the old lady who has to see all these things at twilight of her life.

As per my peliminary analysis of this situation,Both the brothers lived in peace and harmony when both where bachelors. The strong bond between the brothers turned into hatred and jealousy when the accused got married. I feel the accused's wife has a major part which led to a situation of murder. Behind every successful man there is a women and behind every World war within a family, there is a Woman .... Marriage can make life as well as break life ...I have made the most appropriate choice to remain a bachelor and save my family from hatred and jealousy.

Very unfortunate. My wife always advises never to venture into family property disputes. I could see her point of view here.

Very unfortunate incident. Property related matters makes the relations sour. Even Mahabharath happened only because of property. May God give enough strength to their mother to come over the grief who at this old age has to come across very bitter experience like this.

Very unfortunate incident to know brother kills his own brother over the issue of property. Belthangady Taluk, now a days infamous for rape/murder/kidnap//theft/fraud and so so forth added one more murder to it's crown. It might be unintentional hit which ended in murder.May soul rest in eternal peace.
