Udupi, Nov 17: In a fresh discovery, a huge underground tomb belonging to Stone Age era was found in Santhur here, around 10 km from Padubidri on Friday November 16.

The tomb was found while carrying out digging work for planting arecanut plants in the field belonging to Santhur Ganesh Shetty.

Sources said that a similar kind of underground tomb was found earlier near Santhur Subramanya temple. Historian Professor Murugeshi said that these underground tombs are constructed by rock cut cave.

Janapada researcher KL Kundanthaya also visited the spot. He confirmed that the tomb belongs to Stone Age based on the records in the history.

2000 Years Old

Speaking about the underground tomb, he opined that the tomb is around 2000 years old. ‘Mritha Patre’, pot made of black or red soil was found in the tomb, where bones were preserved during those days. It was found with a stone lid measuring 60 cm in diameter.

Amba Shetty, mother of Ganesh Shetty said that her husband had found these kinds of pots 40 years back while digging a well.

Research Opportunity

The underground tomb had a round cylindrical-shaped room measuring 2 metres width and depth of around 2.5 metres. The underground tomb was covered with huge boulders on top.

Land owner Ganesh Shetty said that he would provide the historical land as a research base for archaeologists.

Domnic, Mr. Shetty already offered for research purpose, that is good enough. How much money government will offer for the land? Would you give your land to the government if you were in that place?

I am curious to understand that the site is 2000 years old and also it is stone age.The world over the archaeologists and paleolithics talk of stone age 2-2.5 million years ago and then there was iron age, bronze age etc etc. Does our archelogist lost some zeros when mentioning the age or we are still in a new age. This really surprises me .
