Mangalore: Month-old Baby Girl Rescued at Kinnigoli

Mangalore, Nov 20 (DHNS): The Child Development Programme Officer (CDPO) of Mangalore Rural cracked a child trafficking case and rescued a one-month-old girl child at Kinnigoli near Mangalore on Monday.

On a tip-off, the CDPO raided a house at Kinnigoli where a family was fostering the baby for the last 23 days. The rescued baby has been shifted to Fit Institution in Puttur.

Preliminary investigation has traced the origin of the child to a Catholic organisation in Hyderabad.

The child, whose mother is an unwed, has reportedly changed four hands since its birth.

Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson Asha Nayak told Deccan Herald that the CDPO raided the house based on the information given by the health workers of a government health clinic at Kinnigoli.

The health workers grew suspicious on finding a baby in the house of Sanjeev (name changed), in the absence of the pregnancy records. They passed on the information to the CDPO.

Sanjeev told the officials that it was handed over to him by Rita (name changed), an unmarried woman from the neighbouring village.

Illegal adoption

On questioning Rita, she said she had adopted the child illegally from the Catholic organisation in the second week of October.

Rita had taken the baby to fill the vacuum created by the recent death of her nephew. The child was given to the organisation by an unwed, who was getting married soon.

However, the parents and family members of Rita, who learnt that the child belonged to another community and was adopted illegally, refused to foster the child and forced Rita to get rid of the baby.

This led her to hand over the baby to Sanjeev, said Asha Nayak, confirming there was no money transaction involved.

Efforts to trace mother

The CWC is making efforts to trace the mother of the baby and get in touch with the Catholic organisation.

“The inquiry is on and no complaint has been registered in the police station yet. The baby is healthy and will undergo a medical examination soon,” she said.

    Thanks Renny,
You are opening the eyes of many who are ignorant of the adoption law.
Child trafficking is rampant and certain laws are necessary to curb these which some religious dont understand .
I understand their intention is good but has been misused by others .

No where have I said to stone a woman I have quoted from your new testament on a woman caught in ADULTRY and have said she is supposed to be stoned.
Further I have questioned as to why the man is not being punished which you
    Haven't why ?
in regard to naming anything catholic or not there is a law on adoption and the same has to be kept.

    Mr. Prabhu,

'Catholic' should not be mentioned because I don't want it to sound boastful that only Catholic institutions pick abandoned babies and raise them to offer in adoptions. If you don't believe me, please do a survey and find out whose ratio is more in comparison.

We are living in an era of surrogate and sperm donation to help the couples who don't have a blessing or natural child-bearing. If you believe in stoning a woman who bravely carried the child of a man who has no guts to accept the child publicly, you and he both are fit to be driven to the Himalayas. Men of your mentality don't deserve a woman in the role of a mother, daughter or a wife. Please don't pollute our father, brothers or spouse.

Why are you ashamed to call the organisation catholic ?
Are they doing anything wrong in the eyes of god ?
According to you we will have to say Kannada activists attacked Konkani activists and start another war on language!
Why is the St tag on every institution.
In regard To woman who gave birth she is held responsible and supposed to be stoned, no punishment for man, even though ADULTRY cannot be committed by a woman alone .

Child Welfare Committee ( CWC ) and Child development program officers ( CDPO) like Asha nayak should have better job to do , than barging into house and taking away a baby from someones care and love. It looks like 'KABAAB ME HADDI' ., if baby was neglected or dumped it was different case altogether. Adoption should be made easy and baby should be handed over to Sanjeev. Having baby is cheap now a days but if someone wants to give life to baby , these vultures come from nowhere!. Seems like this officer also raided some child marriage functions , but it looks like she now understood marriage is legal once it happens even if it involves minor . May be now she is milking other cases !.

My first request is to change the word 'Catholic' from the news - all organizations that do charitable works for the society are 'Social Organizations' irrespective of religion. Its a government term/condition that an organization should be should be operated with no religion tag on them. If you call an organization 'Catholic' 'Protestant' 'Brahmin' or 'SC/ST' you are doing service of partiality.

Secondly, please relax adoption rules. Age limit 'combined 90 years for adopting couple' is too much while oldest parent in India is 96 years old - how do you think his children will grow ? And, property ownership compulsion to be eligible for adoption is meaningless. Don't people living on slums raise children ? Does the government ask them why they bore children when they own no property ?

As for this news, please do not go after the woman who gave birth - she did not conceive without one more person's involvement. Please stop totally blaming women for all wrong pregnancies and unwed-births. Giving birth is better than aborting. We have seen many married couple abort a fetus as a method of family planning - why aren't they branded culprits ?

If Sanjeev has taken a full responsibilities to take care of the baby with love...let him have the baby at the earliest, before the baby falls sick by changing so many hands, and also not to waste sanjeev's precious time.

My heart goes out to little Angel. One the one hand its mother relinquished the child immediately after its birth and now the proster parents too abonded it. Definitely almighty will place the child very soon with good parents where it will get good nurturing, love , affection and bright future. May god Bless the child.

Why does religion come in between everything, from abortion to adopting a baby? And why does CWC have to take away the baby from childless couple? And where will this baby land? At govt orphanage?I can only say its the bad luck of both , the baby and the childless couple.Pls CWC, keep yourself in the baby's and Sanjeev's shoes, think as a human being wanting to do good to this baby and HAND OVER THE BABY TO SANJEEV.

When it grows up all will 'eduacte' it about the same!
He will become 'mature'(?) wih this knowledge! Anyhow 'Now 'he's 'innocent' like God!There are 'mature' people round him!!

Why haras the child, why not allow adoption to a willing parent, why also harras the unwed mother of the child, who bore and preserved the child in the womb, which she could have aborted as it is very easy in India, and police and other activists acting as though they have done a very great job.
