Mangalore, Nov 25: It was a day of high action as the maiden Rama-Lakshmana Kambala organized in memory of the late Madhava Prabhu and the late Sarvothama Madhava Prabhu of Madhava Nagar Suratkal, was held at Suratkal near here on Saturday November 24.

Kambala committee president Beluvai Sadananda Shetty and Vittala Maadhava Prabhu inaugurated the event.

A stage programme was held later in the evening at around 5 pm.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Abhaychandra Jain said, "Kambala is Tulunadu’s sport and as farmers we should make the best of it. People are bribed to attend political programmes but an event like Kambala by itself attracts people in large numbers."

Mijar Guttu Anand Alva, Manjayarai Siddakatte, Sadashiv Salian Payyottu, Raghachandra Jain were honoured on the occasion.

As many as 88 buffaloes featured in the slush track event. Hundreds of people flocked the venue to watch and cheer the participants.

Hope government will not ban this sport because you have to beat the buffalo to increase its speed on the track.

These He-Buffaloes are treated like Princes of Jungle throughout their life time but when they enter the starting point of Kambala Track (what we call “Kare” in Tulu), they will be unleashed with stern stroke of flexible stick that will sicken everyone who loves domestic animals but our Kambala lovers says its require to make them angry as much as possible to attain maximum speed while running. Some Buffaloes even bleeding from stick stroke but they will be given oil massage treatment immediately after each and every running. But I have seen Kambala people they never beat their Buffaloes after the Kambala events even though few Buffaloes go berserk sometimes
