Ajman: International Delegates Attend Basic Surgical Skills Workshop at GMC Hospital

Ajman, Nov 28: The basic surgical skills workshop was held on November 23 and November 24 at GMC Hospital, Ajman.

The workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to get hands-on experience of basic surgical skills complemented by theoretical sessions, thereby reinforcing their previously acquired skills in a safe surgical skills lab set-up.

The course has been designed as per the recent trends and guidelines for surgical skills. For the first time, delegates from Bahrain Defense Force Hospital and Sultan Quboos University Hospital, Oman attended the workshop.

The core objective was to train the participants in generic basic techniques applicable to all types of surgery using the most advanced surgical simulators and models.

Professor Manda Venkatramana, Dean College of Medicine, GMU and Professor of Surgery, who designed the workshop, inaugurated and welcomed the delegates and explained the objectives of the workshop.

He introduced the GMU team to the delegates who would be facilitating the hands-on sessions.

Professor Yasien Mallalah Taher, professor and head, Department of Surgery, GMC Hospital, Ajman delivered a lecture on ‘Surgeons and Sutures’ and explained about the various types of suturing materials and explained their uses, advantages and disadvantages.

This was followed by a talk on ‘Wound Healing and Tissue Repair’ by Dr Pradeep K Sharma, associate professor of Surgery, GMC Hospital.

Hands-on sessions on wound care, closure and dressing including suturing and knotting techniques applying basic generis. 

Dr Osama El Gharib Zayed was facilitated by the faculty of surgery and Simi and Sibta, senior nurses from GMC Hospital.

Dr Fadhi AL Shamali, general surgeon, GMC Hospital highlighted the use, the correct methodology and techniques for safe theatre practice including hand washing, scrubbing, gloving and gowning recommended under universal precautions and observing sterile techniques for surgical hand scrub, preparation and draping of sterile field.

Dr Sujaad Al Badran, associate professor, Department of Orthopedics, GMC Hospital described the principles of management of various types of fractures.

Dr Amit Chaturvedi, associate professor, Department of Orthopedics, GMC Hospital Ajman facilitated the hands-on session on the use of techniques like immobilization, traction, splinting and POP for management of fractures and was  assisted by Dr S Bangera in the workshop.

“The workshop was delivered in a combination of large group didactic and small group demonstration sessions followed by practice on models and simulators in the GMU Simulation Center at GMC Hospital, Ajman”, explained Professor Manda.

“We are happy that more and more professionals are interested to attend these workshops and it is attracting international delegates. The feedback from the delegates indicates that we have met our objectives”, he added.

Over 30 doctors and nurses from Bahrain, Oman and UAE participated in the workshop, which was accredited by Ministry of Health UAE for 11 CME Hours.
