Bangalore: Four-year Jail for Congress Corporator in Bribery Case

Bangalore: Four-year Jail for Congress Corporator in Bribery Case

Bangalore, Nov 28 (IANS): A Bangalore court Wednesday sentenced Congress civic corporator L. Govindaraju to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case registered against him by a builder in July 2010.

Awarding the sentence under the Prevention of Corruption Act, Lokayukta (ombudsman) Special Court Judge N.K. Sudhindra Rao also slapped a fine of Rs.90,000 on Govindaraju, who represents the Ganesh Mandir ward of civic corporation in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in the city's western suburb.

The corporator will have to serve an additional six months in the jail if he fails to pay the fine.

The ombudsman's sleuths caught Govindaraju red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs.2 lakh from Udaykumar July 17, 2010. The builder's project was stalled by the civic corporation for alleged irregularities of the building by-laws.

To resume construction, Udaykumar approached Govindaraju who demanded Rs.8 lakh as bribe for regularising the project by circumventing the law.

Although the bribe amount was subsequently reduced to Rs.5 lakh, the builder failed to pay the entire amount.

Unable to bear the harassment by the corporator, Udaykumar lodged a complaint with the ombudsman office, which trapped the accused while accepting the Rs.2-lakh extortion-cum-bribe.

Govindaraju's counsel, however, said he would appeal against the harsh sentence in the Karnataka High Court soon after receiving a copy of the judgement.

Action is in progress against Gadkari - Dinesh Poojary..

Oh is it? Great. Yediyurappa gone from BJP so Karnataka BJP in trouble. If Yediyurappa's supporters join KJP, then BJP government will fall in Karnataka. This is happening because of Nitin Gadkari. Nitin Gadkari along with Advani at the instance of Ananth Kumar and Eshwarappa wanted to keep Yeddy out of power and hence they removed him from Chief Ministership. But same rule is not applicable to Nitin Gadkari. He is still sitting on his post. That means BJP is party with difference. Different sets of rules for different people.

Mr. Dinesh Poojari, as per the comments here, you are strong BJP supporter and blind supporter of BJP. BJP always play dirty games and you also play the same. Reshmi Salian is not congress supporter. I have seen her comments. She doesn't passed biased comments. But you are always biased. So before writing anything verify the facts. Don't write for the sake of writing. Nobody is interested in your cheap talks. You are such a narrow minded person. We know there is corruption in both Congress and BJP. But you cannot say BJP is better. We have seen in Karnataka. BJP has made Karnataka the number one state in corruption and communal hatred. You first think of Karnataka and then go to Delhi. Delhi bahuth dhoor hai mere dhosth.

I agree with Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura/Bengaluru. I dont say that BJP is a perfect political party, but definately much better than corrupt political party congress. So it's better to elect BJP again rather than the corrupt political party congress who are planning to sell our country to others for the sake of their own benefit.

Action is in progress against Gadkari. I hope that will take place soon. But just retrospect if your congress party has taken any action against people involved in corruption. I have given you the big list in my previous comment.

Today Yeddyurappa is not in CM Post because of BJP's action against corruption. Nearly 20 congress ministers are still continuing in office (few are promoted) because no action against corruption from your congress party.

Your biased comments does not make any difference here. BJP is 100 times better than congress. Your mind is not in a position to accept the this truth.

It looks like congress have already stolen your eyes. That is why you are blind about congress corrupt people..-Dinesh Poojary..

Oh is it? Stupid observation. If anybody is corrupt, I have guts to say he or she is corrupt. For me, congress or BJP or any other political party doesn't make any difference. What matters is how clean image the person has got. Coming back to Gadkari, damage is already done. There are also talks that Narendra Modi is playing games here. You can just go deeply into this matter and try to solve it. If Gadkari resigns or does not resign, nothing is going to happen unless we have strict laws to punish the corrupt and criminals. Unfortunately, our laws are so liberal to politicians and highly influencial persons including those of Congress. My point remains intact. When it comes to corruption , Congress and BJP contesting for the top position in corruption followed by other regional parties may be Janata Dal or Mulayam or Mayavati. Congress or BJP or other political parties are formed just to loot the nation and it is happening because people like you blindly support some specific political party without knowing it's misdeeds or pretending to be not knowing it's misdeeds.

In India people’s memory is very short. This scam will over write by other scams. This third grade Corporator will go to High court/Supreme court. Mean time he will be promoted to MLA - MP - CAIBINET MINISTER of State or Central. When Supreme court verdict come, he will be in PARANDAAM. As per Govt rules and regulation the criminal person or the person facing criminal charges will not recruited to Govt Jobs. But he can be Corporator - MLA - MP etc. We Indians always blaming Pakistan's ISI spying against India. I think India don’t require FDI, instead our Court should expedite the collection of fines from all corrupt Officials and Politicians to generate the bribe. But I am sure, one more problems will crop up, that is “Concerned Official takes bribe in order not to slap fine for bribe cases” Surprisingly, again but sure, there is no jail term or fine for person who gives bribe even after his Project was stalled by the Civic Corporation for alleged irregularities of the building by-laws.

    2. Bus accident happens b/w mlr and udupi - "BJP is responsible"
    3. Some right wing fringe elements do moral policing - "BJP is responsible"
    4. Some left wing/non-right wing fringe elements do moral policing - "that was retaliation to BJP, they did it first, so it is justified"
    5. Congress guys indulge in corruption - "This is nothing in front of BJP, so it is justified"

    and so on....

While I have no soft corner for BJP (or any other political parties), and i think BJP stands no chance in the next election, I find all such biased comments silly. No offence for anyone, peace!! :)

It is possible he will ask Lokayuktha that he will pay Rs 7,20,000 (90000x8) and demand no jail punishment.

Lokayuktha gives stringent punishment so that people will hesitate to do such kinds of crimes in future. But HC and SC are very soft cornered towards corruption and punishment. It is very sad to know.

Lokayuktha ordered 3 years (if my memory is correct) jail for Y Sampangi, but unfortunately HC quashed it. I hope at least in this case HC will honor Lokayuktha verdict.

Whoever indulges in corruption and looting public, should be given life time punishment inside jail. When people come to know that they can not enjoy the looted money, they will stop looting automatically.
