Bangalore: Yeddyurappa to Quit, BJP Braces for Split

Bangalore, Nov 29 (IANS): The ruling BJP in Karnataka is bracing for a split as former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will quit the party Friday to launch his own outfit Dec 9.

The 69-year-old Yeddyurappa, credited with leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in the state for the first time in May 2008, is also resigning as an assembly member Friday.

The new party, Karnataka Janata Party (KJP), is scheduled to be formally launched at a public meeting in Haveri, about 400 km north of Bangalore.

The KJP was registered last year with the Election Commission by a Karnataka voter, Padmanabha Prasanna Kumar.

On Nov 10, former BJP union minister V. Dhananjaya Kumar, who was expelled from the party Oct 16, took over as the KJP interim president. He will make way for Yeddyurappa Dec 9.

The KJP has urged the Election Commission to allot it a cycle or a farmer ploughing the field as its election symbol, according to Dhanajaya Kumar.

The BJP is putting up a brave front in the face of an imminent split though it privately acknowledges that Yeddyurappa's departure will damage its prospects of retaining power in next year's elections.

In order to prevent ministers and legislators loyal to Yeddyurappa from following him, BJP state president K.S. Eshwarappa has promised ticket to all but four of the party's 119 assembly members.

The Karnataka assembly is 225-member strong.

Eshwarappa, who is also one of the two deputy chief ministers, met senior leaders and heads of frontal organisations here Tuesday to draw up plans to counter the impact of Yeddyurappa's exit.

Eshwarappa and Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar have been claiming that only a handful of legislators and one or two MPs will join the KJP.

They also say that Yeddyurappa was committing a big mistake by starting a regional party and asserted that no regional party has ever had any impact in the state.

Dhananjaya Kumar has said that over 40 legislators will join the new party, most of them after election dates are announced.

Yeddyurappa is peeved that BJP president Nitin Gadkari did not keep his promised to make him state BJP chief after he was forced to quit as chief ministers in July last year following mining bribery charges.

Yeddyurappa is also making desperate attempts to get rid of the tag of being a Lingayat leader. His is a caste group that makes for 17 percent of the state's 65 million population.

It is generally believed that the BJP captured power in the last assembly polls because of the mass backing of Lingayats.

The former chief minister says his new party will be secular and that minorities would find adequate representation in it.

Yeddy is a born fighter, he never given up his hope (no matter that was for power). He was the guy who brought BJP into power in karnataka. Fighting against the national party is never an easy task. I personally like his fighting spirit at this age, at the end fighter hamesha jeet tha hai...........

An element of doubt flashes in mind.

All the best to BSY & KJP because:

    1. KJP would be a secular party,
under them no threat to our
    constitutional rights.
    2. BSY would distance himself
    from communal forces, who have
    un-ethically & illegally
    targeted peaceful, law abiding
    citizens and their places of
    worship. Moreover, these
    attackers have falsely
    accused/slandered the aggrieved

Let Congress and BJP join hands in the next election and let the regional parties and independents stand in the opposition party. This will bring a strong Government people need a strong Government and only then developmental works take place. Ofcourse people should be careful against corrupt politicians. There should be scope in the ballot paper to abstain from voting if voters think that right candidate is not there. If on final counting voters of a constitutency decide that no right candidate is found the in the ballot paper then the candidates in the ballot paper should be banned from the next election this would enable chosing right candidates and this would help in bringing real democracy into action.

    @KGShenoy
I totally disagree with your views. It is not necessary that if one supports a leader in views that he has acquired some favours.I fail to under stand why you are averse to this view. There are many people who do notreceive favour or under any obligations.I request you to kindly mention sincere and honest people in Karnataka BJP/Cong/JDS.To me there are none.If you take into account the contributions of Yedyurappa in building BJP in Karnataka he always tops the slot and nobody can match him.Corruption is nowadys is every where and no party/leader is an exception to it.We have to accept the ground reality.Anyhow I appriciate your frank views as every body is free to air his views here.I also request you to please watch the political situation after Ydyurappas exit from BJP stream.I would have apprictaed your frank views if you have targetted RSS functioneries in Karnataka for the present state of affairs in politics as they did/responsible in central BJP also which under tremendous pressure.Pl do not blame me that I have received favours from Cong/JDS or others for my personal views.I do not have any political attributes.

    @KRPrabhu,
I don't agree with your view. If we do not have a appropriate leader it is better to have president's rule until we find one and people in active politics get educated. It is better to starve than to eat stale or contaminated food to avoid more problems. I assure you that by the grace of God, still we have enough honest and able people in Karnataka to lead the people of the state. Yediyurappa wasted most of govt. admin time in fighting, accusing, blaming others, weeping etc Disgusting. All developmental work was blocked by him . I was very happy when he became chief minister. The ego that he acquired later made him think and act like a dictator.
Mr Sadananda Gowda was doing a very good job. He could have allowed him to lead the govt. until he cleared all the cloud around him. He was jealous and could not digest Mr. Gowda’s popularity. He was worried and nervous. Hence he tried his best to eliminate Mr. Gowda from his path. (Mr. Gowda is not my relative or friend or neighbour)
I am disappointed to read your supporting comments which indicates your confidence in him which also makes us jump to conclusion that probably you might have acquired some favours from his grace.
As a well wisher of my state Karnataka and my country like most of other fellow citizens, I felt I should write my observation.

Even if he starts a new party with the support of many BJP MLA's, the people will not forget all his misdeeds while he was the CM of the state. He can't escape from the clutches of the law for being so corrupt. People of Karnataka are intelligent enough to recognize between good and bad.

BJP loyalists(Voters) are different. For them Party is above Person and dynasty. Therefore, Yeddy has to only count Lingayat Votes. Again among Lingayats there are "More BJP, than caste oriented voters"This section also will not Vote KGP.
Moreover Shettar is there to play Lingayat Card again and check extodus of Lingayat loyalists.
Karnataka Politics is always dominated by caste and creed.
The day voter/s come out of this vivicious circle, we will have real democracy.

He was in power for 20 months and got the taste of power and what power can do. To remain in power he did everything, and that made him loose power. He is addict to power now and so wants to be back even sinking his ideology and the party of 50 years going down himself with the party.
