Dubai / Sharjah, Dec 3: In one of the most competitive matches held here at the Wonderer’s Club Sharjah, for the first time Konkans Dubai emerged as winners beating all their previous opponents while the Ace Spikers as usual lifted the volley ball trophy at the Kanajar Open Volley Ball and Throw Ball Tournament.

The much anticipated Open Lourdes Kanajar Volley Ball and Throw Ball tourney began at Sharjah Wonderers Club at 8.30 am on Sunday December 2 on UAE National Day.

Kanajar Lourdes Association of Kanajar Parish Udupi Diocese has been organizing this tournament every year successfully to support less privileged children back home in Kanajar, wherein almost all the teams of UAE participate.

Gilbert Aranha one of the officials of the tournament and coach of Mangalore Konkans team began the proceedings of the tournament along with Sudhakar Alva (throwball coach) and K Moideen (volleyball coach). Fr Ronald Lobo of Kokkada Parish who was present and on the occasion of National Day wished all the participating teams.

Other dignitaries namely Frank Lobo, James Mendonsa (president – Mangalore Konkans), Walter Nandalike (Daijiworld), Dayan D’Souza, Joseph Mathias (Merit Freight and Logistics), Wilfred Mendonsa and Frank Lobo (Galaxy Star Electromechanical   Works) were present on the dais.

Vijay Barboza, president of LKAE in his inaugural message said that in the past tournament proceedings about 45 children of Kanajar have benefited for their educational needs.  He thanked all the sponsors who made this possible and requested to support LKAE in future too so that more and more children would be benefited.  He also called on all the participants to play all the matches in the spirit of the game.  Other LKAE committee members namely Aloysius D’Souza, Joy D’Souza and Alwyn D’Souza were present on dais.

Fr Ronald Lobo invoked God’s blessings and wished for all the participants’ success and also for the success of the tournament.  UAE national anthem was played on the occasion of UAE’s National Day and Indian national anthem was followed thereafter.

The LKAE tournament torch lighting ceremony was held and the light was taken in the procession to the dais along with all committee members of LKAE followed by oath taking ceremony which was conducted by Austine Barboza. LKAE tournament was inaugurated by releasing the doves.

The exciting tournament began with first ball tossing by Fr Rony Lobo along with captains of all the teams.

There were ups and downs, victories and failures. The Konkans Dubai and Mogaveera’s UAE reached the finals in ladies throw ball and Konkans Dubai and Bunts Dubai met in finals of men’s throw ball finals.

In the ladies matches it was a do or die situation for Konkans and they were tested for their patience and dedication and Konkans Dubai proved that they were determined to win and did not give any chance to Mogaveers to gain supremacy and managed to beat them finally to win the precious ladies throw ball trophy.

In the men’s throw ball too Konkans Dubai fought a good fight with their regular rivals Bunts Dubai but eventually lost to the strength and experience of Bunts Dubai and Bunts Dubai emerged as winners of men’s throw ball trophy.

In the other volley ball matches, many were absent and the finals were held between Ace Spikers and Sea-Mens Tigers-B wherein Ace Spikers managed to beat Sea-Mens Tigers-B eventually and lifted the most sought LKAE volley ball trophy.

In the conclusion and prize distribution ceremony the prominent guests namely Stany D’Souza (LKAE), Fr Rony Lobo, Austine Barboza, Frank and Alfred D’Souza were present on the dais.

All the referees of the tournament were honoured with mementos.  An action was held for the remaining raffle tickets were held.

Stany D’Souza one of the prominent committee member of LKAE proposed the vote of thanks and thanked all the participants for playing the game in good spirit, all the sponsors for their generosity, all the organizers for their dedication and hard work to put up the great tournament, sound system, coaches, emcees of the day Uttam Menezes and Gilbert Aranha.

A well known volley ball player was recognized by LKAE for his dedication for the last 15 years as a permanent volley ball player at the venue and tournament held by LKAE.

The players of the day were honoured namely: Best smasher in men’s throw bal - Shiva Shetty of Bunts Dubai, all rounder - Ullas Menezes of Konkans Dubai, best discipline team - Pacific Stars Sharjah and in the women’s throw ball team: best smasher - Nalini of Mogaveers UAE, all rounder - Anita Lobo and best discipline team - SMMKC Sharjah.

In volley ball the honour of best smasher went to Rodney of See Mens Sharjah and Spiker to Ayyaz of Ace Spikers, all rounder to Dhiraj of Ace Spikers and the best discipline team went to Sifa Chilli Willy team.

The final trophies were distributed to all winners and runners up teams as follows:

    Dear Valerian,

Please don’t compare with Throw ball players with Volleyball. Since I am a active participant in all Volleyball tournament as per my personnel experiences there are many mistakes happens in Volleyball matches also, But the players discarding those mistakes after next SERVICE served. Don’t think Volleyball being controlled by Mr. Moideen. There enough maturity, cooperation and experiences works behind..Cheers kudos…!!!

    Dear John/Mahesh,

If you have enough guts why can’t you represent as a referee for one of the forth coming tournaments. Lets us watch and enjoy your referee skills...I would appreciate the sincere effort from Mr. Sudhakar Alva who is managing Throw ball tournaments successfully, don’t worry sir we are always with you and just IGNORE some unprofessional comments about you. I could see lack of sportive spirit in some of throw ball players.(May be they seeing and playing tournaments first time ) Let’s consider all tournaments are just for fun and family get together and we are not here for only play any games/sports. It’s just FUN.. Let us meet again on Dec 7th at Alain and Dec 14th at Sharja…Cheers !!!!!

    Dear Friends,
We have commented so much on the last tournament, referee decision, walk out of the team, banning the team, match referee etc…. I feel now it’s a time to put a full stop to all those issues. These things happens only in throw ball games not in Volleyball games.. Why??? Mr. Moideen and his team are very professional guys and disciplined. Hence, I request Mr. Sudhakar Alva to build throw ball referees team and train them properly in order to avoid these type of mess. I have seen war of words between Mr. Sudhakar Alva and Mr. Gilbert… actually this was not required… and the comment made by Mr. Gilbert (banning the team) was a wrong one… I felt this situation could have handled better way..
I congratulate LKAE for successfully organizing this tournament… Now..please stop the blame game and enjoy your weekend….

@Dalia Suares you are totally out of focus, I am not referring the match where KCO walked out, there was another match (ladies) Bunts vs Konkans, and several contravesies in TB matches and the favoritism was clearly seen. If some one repeatedly trying to prove that he is so professional then why so many mess happened in throw ball refereeing? Who should take the responsibility referee or so called
match referee who is boasting he is professional. If he is professional it is his responsibility everything goes well and a team is walking out clearly shows, (though KCO were looser), match referee totally failed to manage the situation, the experience etc., mentioned doesn't suits here. Be apologetic instead prove on a wrong subject. Here I am not blaming any body but trying to show the fact.

    Preetham,
I think you are not sure of what you are trying to convey.
Just to let you know, KCO approached Mr. Sudhakar Alva with their concern after the match.
But, may be due to some limitations being the Match Referee he was not able to oblige the request from KCO. (which we truely understand).
Secondly, I was not commenting against the decisions of Sudhakar Alva, i was referring to the decisions of the Referee during the Game (KCO-KD).

    Thank you.

    Yes Mr. Sudhakar,

Thats why in the same incident you told the Organizers not to interfere in this and the organizers reminded and made you clear that they have appointed you as match referee and you should respect them. I think this is enough evidence how you deal with the organizers who appointed you. Now we can imagine your decisions on the game

    Dear Mr John,
Before writing comments you should know the game, rules, and experience of conducting tournments. For your information,I am a refree for last 10years.I officiate atleast 5-6 tournements every year. You can check with following associations like LKAE,Milagris,Karavali milan,Abudhabi kannada sangha,KCO,Sharjah kannada sangha,Bunts dubai, konkan bells etc.Check the organisers what is their feedback.Match refree have a right to take a decision when a dispute arise to give a re-service,that is what I done with consultation Mr stanly of LKAE.I have already mentioned in my privious comment my Mobile no. you can call me.I will clarify any doubts in front of LKAE commitee members. Please note anybody commented with their original name they can call and clarify.I don't care about fake commentitor's ediotic comments.I don't need any certificate from people who don't know the basics of the game, rules, and experience of conducting tournments.I have enough appriciation from all the association who conducted the tournments including Dubai Shopping festival Commitee who conducted throwball for consecutive three years in their shopping festival games.

Kudos to Kanjar team for organizing such an exciting event. Congo to all the winners and also those who participated in the tourney. First of all let us all put ourselves in referee's shoes and see whether there was/were any wrong decision/s from his side while officiating. I would also like to know whether all those people who commented about wrong decisions are aware of all the prevailing rules. Even I myself have officiated several tournaments in the U.A.E and folks it is one of the toughest tasks. Now let us see what could have gone wrong during the match. All those who say he was favoring a team I don’t agree coz the referee in question plays neither in KCO nor in KD team. So the question of favoritism in the first instance doesn’t exist. There might be cases of human errors and he might have given decisions which he believed to be correct, but having said that, a referee must take all precautions to give right and firm decisions as per the rules which are in practice over the years in the U.A.E. People have also commented against Bunts and KCO for their approach towards the game and the match officials. Well! It’s a team game and being a sportsman I know how it feels when you are aggrieved by the referees so called wrong decisions as we claim. I personally know both the teams and the players and if they have raised their opinion it is purely coz of the human error committed by the referee. It is common in every sport and these things do happen but all these unwanted comments targeting their behavioral approach and sportsmanship is totally unreasonable. Everyone has a right to express his/her opinion on this but we must also think twice before commenting and raising such issues which would hamper the hard work of the organizer’s hard work. Guys! Those who think they can officiate (judge better and are aware of throw ball rules) better than any of the present referees kindly contact Mr. Sudhakar Alva on his mobile number. I gladly welcome all your comments.

Savitha, Mahesh, I do agree with you, I have seen the women's match where the game referee has given a correct decision and the team reached to 14-10 after winning the second game. When it was commented by opponent team and the spectators supporting other team (Bunts) the match referee interfered and changed the points from 14-10 to 13-10, just to favor the loosing team. This is the experience, knowledge and qualification of a so called match referee.

    Mr. Preetham,
A reply to your toast, Firstly i would want to know whether you were present during the KCO-Konkans Dxb match ??

IF not then i would give you a recap, Its not about ONE or TWO or THREE decisions made wrong by the Referee....it is SIX decisions made wrong.
Now, as i observed KCO was leading 9-7 in a 15 point game.
Because of these SIX wrong decisions the scores changed and still KCO managed to come up to loss of 13-15.

Now, lets give off 1 wrong call or say 2 wrong calls by the referee....but my friend 5 to 6 wrong calls...is a BIG DEAL in a 15 point game.

For all those who said KCO is a coward, i dont think this is justified as KCO walked off after the 1st game and not during the game.
I would agree with all the above OFFENDERS if KCO walked off during the game, yes this would be termed as childish.

As few commented, Please know the matter, reasons etc...and then post your meaningless comments.

A Saying For the Offenders "Its easy to point out the bad in a person rather than the good"

A tip for you all :-)

    Take Care.

Well organized tourney by LKAE. Hats off to you guys.

1st up all for all those who consider sports as fun, please there are so many other places like Wild Wadi, Waterworld. go and have FUN.

and KCO"s decision about walk out from the match as a sportsmanship its not fair. but referees should have their own limits, if they want to support a team please play for that team instead doing referee.

I know KCO team, they play hard, they practice hard. whatever happened to them is unfair.

most of the guys who has opposed KCO, i am sure they have not seen their match. they were just present there when the argument was going.
Referee was absolutely wrong, and that too more than 7-8 times.

Unlike any other organisers, LKAE has taken care of the whole crowd by providing breakfast, lunch and sufficient drinking water until the end. They are trying to improve year after year, which we all must appreciate. Let us all show the sportsman spirit and encourage the organisers as opposed to discouraging.

U stated "I salute the referee she stood firm" I think the referee was man , if u were present then u must be referring some other match not kco match .. They reached semi's by knowing the rules and playing hard ' I have watched their match very closely each n every time , they were semi finalists on Konkan bells tourney as well. They know their rules very well. And to ban them u can start with , if u r an organiser then others might follow. It's not easy task to arrange a tourney , it's easy to write 4 lines without justifying

First and Foremost, I personally respect the organizing committe for their efforts and dedication towards this tournament which was a grand success. Congratulations and Keep up the good work.

For those one liners - Jamba Kocchida Uttara Kumara and Naach Na aaye aangan teda... was trully entertaining but that must also be related to the refrees and not only the teams. A mistake done once or twice any team will tolerate, but the same mistake continuously given for 6 times in a row cannot and should not be accepted by any team.

For those who say walking out of the tourney was childish act - may be correct but being judgemental by only hearing things and not understanding the reason behind this gesture is not correct. KCO is a team with calibre and talent & thats why they made it to the semi-final inspite of some bad decisions by the referees. The match refree should have come out with a amicable solution in order to retain the team for the interest of the sport.

And for those who tell a team should be banned for life or ban for 20 years - guys you really need to get yourselves checked up. I feel there is nothing stupid than what you have written.

Instead of blaming teams and refrees please find the facts. In every throwball tournament there are different rules and regulations. We have international guidelines for this sport and only those rules must be followed.

We all talk about participation is important and not Winning or Loosing. To me it is absolutely insane. Any team participating in tournament comes with an intention to win the tournament. If that level motivation of winning is not there then its better to sit at home and watch the Idiot box and post a comment of LIFE BAN because that person doesn't deserve to even be a spectator.

This sport is becoming a favourite in UAE and people here should support and give suggestion to improvise its popularity and not comment Blindly.

All said and done, I request descipline to me maintained by all at all times.

Dear sports lovers, I agree with most here that, LKAE gave us a well organized tournament and special congrats for starting the event in planned time which is not common in these days. However, I would like to highlight here that no one has the liberty to use abusive words against either opposite team member or against any spectator. Therefore, Bunts are in a way right in showing their dissent for such treatment.
But if the decisions are inconsistent then teams do express their dissatisfaction whether you play for fun or otherwise. Agreed, refrees are human beings and they are all one among us and not professionals therefore do commit errors but my request is we should learn from our mistake and try not to repeat in future.
Finally, I insist we all brothers and sisters from Karnataka should only carry positives out of all these tournaments and as Rv. Fr. Ronald Lobo rightly said, these tournaments provides opportunity to Karnataka families to meet each other’s and all participants are winners. Also my special thanks to Rv. Fr. Ronald Lobo for giving his speech & prayer in Kannnada. Congratulation Konkans Dubai, Mogaveer UAE, Bunts Dubai, Ace Spikers and Sea mens –Shj….

Shocked to see the behavior of KCO being hosts of many tournaments. Shame on KCO, you deserve a ban, and no teams should participate in their tournaments or their any events. Remember you have taken oath before the tournament started. Last but not least Match refree should not belong to any team unless he is neutral. I have seen he was pressing a referee to change a decision which was rightly given, and I salute the referee she stood firm on her decision Hats off. Over all it was a fantastic day out.

We either say that, we dont know the rules or have no time. Thats where the point lies. Its easy to comment behind the curtains but hard to take the responsibility. Yes, I am a player of a team & we too faced some bad decisions. We should note that, all of us here, are not profeesionals in this game either players or referies. We should take these lightly. I agree all of us spend money and time behind this & work hard togather as a team. but we are not gonna become celebrities by winning matches. so better enjoy the game & play in true sportsmenspirite.

    Well Organized Tournament LKAE.
Now for all those against the KCO team, first question....How many of you'll were present at this dispute ?? Before commenting, please look into the matter.

Yes, i know it could be a childish behaviour for some and may not be for some.
But, i would agree with one of the well wishor's that please put yourself in their shoes.

KCO WON all the matches to reach the Semi-Finals. (If they didnot know the rules of the game, would they reach the Semi-Finas) ??

Secondly, KCO walked off after the 1st game of the Semi-Finals.
(which for me is not a childish act)

KCO as a team, respected the referee's decision and continued to play the game in a sportsmanship spirit.
AFter the game, they went forward to the Match-Referee and the Core Committee of LKAE and put forward their issues which was not respected.

Congratulations for Kanajar Association (LKAE SPORTS EVENT) for this great tournament but i request to be firm on the decision and don't come up with new rule/decision at last minute. We experienced this yesterday, when one of our team member was not allowed to play in volleyball match. Our colleague is here in UAE from past 2 months and was hunting badly for job and at last he was given job in one good company, Even we produced Passport apart from the offer letter to confirm his arrival date. Further, HE WAS NOT BROUGHT OR INVITED TO PLAY ONLY THIS TOURNAMENT AND I WOULD SAY THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY OBJECTION FOR A PLAYER FROM KARNATAKA. As a sportsman, I personally will not object such minor thing and the game should go on..!!! At the same time we don't want to go against organization and that's the reason we played in the spirit.

Lastly, I would request organizers that in future we should take this matter in to consideration and a PERSON SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY if he is in UAE from couple of months for job/business and he is from Karnataka. I totally agree that such events are for family gatherings/get together and little sports activity but we can't come up with such hard rule where we don’t allow a KANNADIGA to play.

Lourdes Kanajar event was best organised sports event of the year sofar. Some organisations do not even provide breakfast despite taking good amount as entry free from teams. But Kanajar provided best breakfast and lunch..and lots of other goodies. thanks

Teams, when you take oath, please try to respect the oath and play according to that. Running away from court, fearing loosing the game is like 'Jamba Kochida Uttara Kumara'. UAE throwball organisers must start a federation here, otherwise, throwball game will lose its fame soon. Keep KCO men's team out of all tourneys next year please

Yes, agree. Walking out from game due to bad decision is not the spirit. I think it was sad day for throwball in UAE, as someone said here. We all coming here to fight the match, winning or losing is secondary. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. Though referee makes mistake, one must not walk out. Walking out from game is toooo childish behaviour. I support of banning KCA team from men's throwball for next 20 years.

to all those who have commented on walking out team, for a moment put yourselves in thier shoes and see how it feels, when referee makes repeated mistakes. every team comes there to reach finals.. all cannot reach, but these type of errors will stop those teams going higher.

It is indeed a superbly organized event and they are doing it year after year. But we have one request please brief the referees before the event gets started, so that all the referees follow the same set of rules, there is already so much confusion with each match with playing 7 players, 9 players etc plus we see there are individual rules by these referees (one of the referee instructing the men team not to target a single player) I dont from which rule book this referee referred this rule.
My sincere request to all the organizers of the Throwball tournament please come together and implement one rule for the UAE level tournaments so that everybody is clear about the rules. I believe the main intention of having these tournaments is just to have fun and but nothing else, but because of some of the referees and some match officials things go wrong in a very quick time, as somebody said Bunts team is coming to fight, which is not at all true, we just objected to one of the match officials abusing words to the Bunts team manager which is not at all called for even though we were at the receiving end of so many repeated bad decicions against the Bunts team.
Again congratulations to the Kanajar Association for organizing a wonderful tournament

KCO should remember , they too orgaise throwball tournament every year. What would they feel, if any one of the teams walk out in protest? Doesn't it hurt? My hats off to LKAE and all refrees...you all have done tremendous job. It's easy to fight, but difficult to organise such event professionally.

Valerian D'Souza, Dubai.... Why can't you specify the team by name. Don’t you think there are more teams in Abu Dhabi and your comment will misguide the readers. If you want to say something, say it specifically.

Valerian, Rohan and Vinutha, me and most of the attended do agree with your opinions. They should know how the organizers are struggling to arrange such events. Also we have a small request with all the organizers to arrange good refineries who can control the players, just dealing with the team captain in the court without entertaining or speaking to any other players and the crowd

A very well organized tourney…I do agree with below comments that the team walked out does not seek any respect. It was seen by everyone that only the losing team only have issues with referee…I must say the referee done a far better decision compare to the other referees present over there. only one sentence which will match the walked out team “NAACH NA JAANE AANGAN THEDA”

Kudos to Kanajar team for wonderfully organising this event. Congratulations to the winners. I am extremely saddened to note that, spirit of the game was at the lowest level in the history of UAE's sporting day as KCO Abu Dhabi men's throwball team prefered to walk out of the tournament. It is quite natural that, decisions go wrong, human error is alway there in all sports, but walking out from tourney is really unprofessional, unethical and unmannerd for any teams. Hope other teams will learn from this shameful act
