Bangalore Best Indian City to Live: Mercer

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI): Technology hub Bangalore has emerged as the best city to live in India, pipping other metro cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, in terms of of overall quality of living, according to a latest worldwide survey of cities by global HR consultancy Mercer.

Amongst Indian cities, Bangalore (139) ranks higher than New Delhi (143), Mumbai (146), Chennai (150) and Kolkata (151) in overall quality of living, according to Mercer's 2012 Quality of Living Index.

"Bangalore's rise in its quality of living ranking can be attributed to positive ratings for international schools which are suitable for expatriates," the report said. In terms of city infrastructure, however, Mumbai (134) was ranked highest among Indian cities followed by Kolkata (141), New Delhi (153), Chennai (168), Bangalore (170).

However, no Indian city could manage to find a place in the global list, which was topped by Vienna and was followed by Zurich and Auckland in second and third place, respectively. Other cities in the top 10 include Munich in fourth place, followed by Vancouver (5th). Dusseldorf dropped one spot to rank sixth followed by Frankfurt (7th), Geneva (8th), Copenhagen (9th), and Bern and Sydney tied in 10th place. Indian cities do not fare well compared to their global peers in the list.

Among Asia Pacific cities, Australian and New Zealand cities rank higher on the index with Sydney (11), Wellington (13), Melbourne (18) and Perth (21) following Auckland (3). Globally, the cities with the lowest quality of living are Khartoum, Sudan (217); N’Djamena, Chad (218); Port-au-Prince, Haiti (219); and Bangui, Central African Republic (220). Baghdad, Iraq (221) ranks last.

Mercer's Quality of Living index list covers 221 cities, ranked against New York as the base city. "In order for multinational companies to ensure their expatriates are compensated appropriately and an adequate hardship allowance is included in compensation packages, they must be aware of current events and local circumstances," Mercer Senior Researcher Slagin Parakatil said.

"Factors such as internal stability, law enforcement effectiveness, crime levels and medical facilities are important to consider when deciding on an international assignment, and the impact on daily life that could be encountered by the expatriate in overseas placements," Parakatil added.

    Dear nagesh nayak, bangalore,

You are always after someone's comment and then you express your fury with a dim-witted word "HEY". Why is that yaar ? Are they not your own state or country people? Why do you always support politicians who are ne’er-do-well and do not lose sleep for the common man who took pain in gifting the elected official seat?

One more thing, why the devoured bitter always wedges onto your gorge?

Kindly do not keep any hard feelings. Always think of the golden phrase "Give respect, Take respect" and that gifts the assessment to your ethnicity my dear.

Were Mercer going thru their archives while coming up with the list. Once upon a time Bangalore was known as "garden city of India" and now it is in competition with Mumbai for being dirty and slums in various areas. Furthermore, you can now easily call it "pub city of India" as you come across pubs every step of the way .. that are overcrowded by school-going youngsters as there seems to be no age criteria for entrance. This is one big attraction for international students. For the standard of schools and studies .. no others can come close to our Mangalore.

Bangalore today is certainly not the ideal city for one to live in - It has a high crime rate (see news item Regarding shortage of Policemen to maintain law and order) poor infrastructure congested roads constant traffic jams high pollution regular power cuts water and sewage problems uneven footpaths that are used by stray as well as well bread dogs for dumping their load cattle roaming the streets and tied on foot paths that are also used by two wheelers to short cut the traffic snarls stinking garbage dumpped on the corners every street dim lit roads - and the list of woes for every Bangalorean is endless ..... it will take a few more decades for Bangalore to be a Model City to have any ranking at all - few gated colonies fot the well healed does not give the survey by MERCER any credibility, for people like me who have known Bangalore since the mid 60's - a garden air conditioed garden city today's Bangalore is a nightmare ! We have no choice having decided to make it our home as they saying goes what cannot be cured has to be endured !!! Dear readers please refrain from commenting based on Political ideologies .. roam the streets of Bangalore on foot to get the pulse of the people who live here ... Blaming / praising the BJP or Congress will not make this City No. 1 - by any stretch of imagination.

    @Mr. Nayak,
Politics is not to be blamed. It is us who elect them. So who is responsible then? Anyways, point it not that, Bangalore has one of the worst public transport systems. Do you really think 6500 BMTC busses are required. many run empty back to back just adding more traffic. What initiative has any political party or BBMP initiated to preserve the environment? Bangalore, the garden city, which is no more a garden city. infrastructure is one of the worst. I too love Bangalore, but find it hard to drive in a city which is highly "unorganized". One heavy rain and the city is "drowned". Roads, or potholes? traffic a chaos!!!! the only thing still the same is the environment where BBMP has no control, else that too would had been a history. oh, not to forget, the namma metro, a station every 100 metres with dangerous bends. I miss the old Bengaluru which deserved the title "best indian city to live"....

SM Krishna had built a flyover in Kengal Hunumathayya Road in Bangalore. This flyover is connecting 3 roads. Guess what is special in this... This was the only flyover in the world which had SIGNALS on the flyover :-) Vehicles were standing and waiting on the flyover... For this reason this flyover was worldwide famous. This shows the intelligence of our congress people. This is how congress our people works. The purpose of BUILDING FLYOVER itself was forgotten!

This problem was fixed in 2010 February by BJP Govt by altering the traffic directions.

@ Dinesh & Tony - ardent supporters of BJP!! Just take a look at the rankings carefully:

Overall Bangalore is 139 on global scale... any ranking below 70 or 80 on Mercer means that the city is poor in electricity supply, water availability, hygiene, public transportation, housing, traffic congestion & cleanliness.

Secondly, in terms of city infrastructure which is important for a modern and progressive IT city like Bangalore we have scored the least and a pathetic 170.

So 'wisemen', please understand that our state government is not shining but their bank balance is 'shining'.
