SP, BSP to Rescue, Government Wins FDI Vote in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Dec 7 (IANS):
The government Friday won the vote in the Rajya Sabha on foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail, two days after it sailed through the Lok Sabha, finally getting endorsement from parliament for a policy seen as a major step forward in its reforms process.

Getting support once again from the unlikely combination of Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the government won the day in the Rajya Sabha by 14 votes.

In the house, the opposition-backed motion got 109 votes and the government 123 votes. One member, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, was away playing a match against England in Kolkata.

Minutes before the voting process began, the SP walked out of the house with its nine MPs, bailing out the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) -- as it had Wednesday when the Lok Sabha voted on the issue.

On Thursday, day one of the debate on the issue in the Rajya Sabha, Mayawati had said in the house that 15 MPs from her party would be voting with the government.

Both the BSP and SP support the government from outside.

The government's win on getting 51 percent foreign equity in multi-brand retail has long been a contentious issue, stalling almost the entire first two weeks of the winter session of parliament.

With this, global names like Carrefour, Tesco and Wal-Mart will set up stores in India.

Addressing the house during the debate, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma hit back at the opposition and said the government had been "talking to everyone, farmers, traders, consumers, states".

The government also held inter ministerial consultations on the issue, heard the recommendations and then took the decision, he said.

Now forget your dream of making self proud-ed Mr.Narendra Bhai Modi the prime minster of India. This is rehearsal for the 2014 parliamentary post election scenario. Govt will be in the hands of Congress for the third consecutive term. BJP will be struggling to reach the three digit figure.

We have few ladies in Indian Politics with unpredictable nature. Jaya Lalita, Mamata Banerjee, Mayawati, etc. can never be trusted anymore. SP and BSP lambasted UPA-2 Government for FDI but SP at least saved their face by walkout. But BSP now openly voted in favour of FDI which is very surprising. I think they did realize that, any how they will not gain any MP Post too in UP, so for them whether yes or no it doesn’t make any difference. But any how, who ever favoured FDI will get fitting reply by none other than our own people in next Lok Sabha Election.

We should remember that when the FDI was allowed in the car industry there was similar debate about us losing independence and killing off off our jewels (Ambassador,Padmini?).Is anybody complaining now? Similar story for the IT industry when foreign manufacturers were allowed to operate. There is nothing a given country can do on a large scale alone without expertise and capital from outside capital. In the case of retail, just ask the boss of Big Bazaar,Mr.Biyani.

On another note, there are many things we grow today and consume in India were brought in by foreigners and their expertise: The potatoes were brought to Europe from South America by the Spaniards and then to India by the British, the Tomatoes, the chillies,Coffee,Tea,nutmeg etc were brought by the Portuguese, Apples were brought by an American in the 19th century, etc, etc. We can not live and prosper in a cocoon.

I heard Arun Jaitly's speach in Rajya Sabha.
His points were relevant & 100% True!
Yes IF- FDI was for 100%.
Both BJP & their Bitter Rivals Communists are getting closer in Idealogy that is OUTDATED by 60 years!
Don't Under estimate Indian Consumers where successive govts allowed only 2 companies to manufacture cars to save our auto majors!
Now there are many rivals & all have market share & we have a multiple choices.
Same way we will decide which produce is better as well as their prices.
We can Make or Break them- Don't think we are still Amul-babys in 21st century needing constant protection from politicians to safe guard our welfare.

Rupee strengthened this week and further likely strengthen due to smooth sailing FDI in LS and RS. - ISMAIL PERINJE

Indeed a good joke from Ismail. Within 2 days of FDI approval, investment came, Indian economy improved and rupee strengthened against dollar ?

    Here are the statistics:

on 06-Dec (day after FDI approval) rupee gained to become 54.1350 against USD.

Today rupee TUMBLED by 33 paise to become 54.4750.

What do you say about this Ismailji? Rupee is spoiled your UPA Govt beyond imaginary by unethical economical policy.

Do you know why indian share market still went down even after FDI? Because there are various other factors that decides a country's economy globally. But you sitting in KSA think that with FDI, india became very rich because your govt approved it. That is not true man. Stop fooling others here by your baseless comments.

With FDI Congressmen Swiss bank accounts strengthened, not Indian economy.

But whatever has happened so far, I hope FDI will strengthen Indian economy as claimed by UPA. It will be good for us if our economy is improved.

So Nice ! FDI in Retail! Let us be optimistic !
Our Grains, Fruits, Milk, Meat, Vegetables,Fish etc. will not go ROTTEN for inadequate storage and distribution (Supply chain management) but will REACH the consumers.
Growers are likely to get fair price. timely procurement!
Procurement & distribution will be organized.
International standard products will be available here too.
When Rajiv Gandhi implemented computerization, some sections had apprehensions so they opposed, but we can see the benefits today so is the FDI.
Heartening point is, most of the Political parties are REALIZING the need of SECULARISM for India like Country, where its inhabitants of of various casts, creed, religions, languages etc. and they stay united when there is crisis, so wonderful !

SP and BSP are big rivals like BJP and Congress. If you closely observe the above picture is merger of two photos. Just by seeing this photo, don't come to conclusion that SP and BSP working hand to hand. I am sorry for your mental situation.

Both SP and BSP supported FDI to avoid CBI probe against them. This is the internal game plan by congress.

Politicians will not decide NDA Govt in next election. It is common people like you and me will decide who should rule us. People are fed up with daily scams, price hike, insecurity etc etc from last 9 years. At the same time people are convinced with Gujarat Development. Even Time magazine has reported Modi's capabilities. The same magazine has reported in-capabilities of MMS.

What is rationale of NDA opposing  FDI in retail? All states are free to make decision either to permit not to permit international retail giants to operate in their states!!!In fact NDA earlier (during regime) chaired a meeting regarding FDI in retail!!!They don't want UPA to get mileage on the issue and opposition is politically motivated rather than welfare of the KIRANI/indigenous family centered trading units.NDA/BJP need to learn how to govt run in bad weathers.

UPA pulled both the legs of BJP.
    One leg was Lok Sabha.
See how big mouth is backfired in their own folly
AALU AND RAISING THE QUESTION OF CBI BENEFITED FDI.
Aalu of Mcdonald bought from Gujarat
Mayavathi walked out to make their vote absent.

Another leg of bjp was in Rajya Sabha.
In Rajya Sabah Mulayam Singh and Mayavathi voted for FDI
Both are inspired of win, win vote in Lok Sabah.
Mayavathi voted in Rajyasabha because the bjp raised the question of CBI.

Here also the big mouth has defiled in their own folly.
    UPA, GO AHEAD WITH REFORMS.

Dear ISMAIL.K.PERINJE, Sahebre Please understand Rupee strengthens whenever there is inflow of US Dollars within India .when FDI in Retail comes surely Dollars come in or mere announcement itself will make related Foreign currencies come in and hence Dollars increase .But after all that is not actual our own money it is Investment driver .Where as instead if NRA s like you Remit money into India or If exports take place from India to Out then that is real money into Indias Current account and that alone is the real Rupee strengthening and this is temporary strengthening .In Short when you take Loan you will have Lot of Money in your account and when you get your salary then also you will have lot of money in your account .Choice is yours which one to choose .FDI in other sectors is good as it will increase exports also But if done in retail it will increase Imports not exports .Inspite of this detailed explanation you may click disagree God alone can save India

I would like to give my personal views with regard to FDI. I feel passing of FDI in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha is a victory to our nation. I am sure shortly our economy will improve. BJP is not a fool. They have qualified people to analyse the positive and negetive side of FDI. They know it very well that this will boost our economy. They just oppose it because before 2014 election they do not want to have economic reforms in the country due to the fear of losing election. I hope economy of our country will improve before 2014 elections and UPA will be victorious again. Lets pray for the good. With all curruption charges UPA is better.

Rupee strengthened this week and further likely strengthen due to smooth sailing FDI in LS and RS. Economy of India opened way back 1993 by MMS and it continues till now (a long process)Our growth rate set to increase due to liberalization and inflation is @ 7.45% which high.India having middle class @ 25 % and it is likely set grow 45% in the year 2020.Therefore,FDI in retail is very much required as Indian middle class and upper middle class families has more disposable income.SP/MAYA even though against FDI,they don't want take advantage communal forces in India and that's why unconditionally supported UPA.As this move is new in large scale, the pros and cons could be assessed only after full scale operations by INTERNATIONAL BRANDED RETAILERS.

Opposition parties opposing everything that ruling party proposing for the sake of being opposition party. These opposition parties don't want any pro people policies fearing that people will vote the ruling party again. A responsible opposition party should support all good work of ruling party and oppose only any wrong doings, there by help the country to prosper.

As far as Agri products , raw materials and all local available materials are procured from local farmers & manfacturers, MNC retails should be good for economy especially for farmers. But unlike what we see in Dubai, where Lulu chains sells frozen parathas made in China and many other produce which may be available in India then it will be frome pan to pyre for Indian Farmers.

FDI in retail is a good thing and it will set right the current economic imbalances if any. Indian players like Big Bazaar, More, etc are not exactly running charitable businesses now. With the entry of Wal-Mart, Carrefour, etc consumers will get a wider choice of quality products at reasonable prices. So win win proposition for consumers and farmers, sympathies to BJP and Co for the loss, better luck next time. Hehehehehe

I really do not understand why this noise about FDI in retail. At Bejai, I have not seen a shop getting closed although there is Big bazar, city center,MORE, Easyday etc etc. in Mangalore. People still throng to places like Fathima traders in Hampankatta or other general stores for their day to day buying. Even fish is bought in fish market and not in a mall. I have found general disregard for the mall chain because of the poor quality of materials offered. So when Wal mart or any other FDI comes to India it will come along with a existing company in India or takeover the existing retail business like it happened with Fabmall and Birla. Even a group like Reliance could not sustain the retail business and had to shut shop under the competition. This also may be the case of the FDI. If they won't get business then surely they will shut their shop and go. But the small shops in neighborhood will still thrive. In Bangalore the Metro retail has been a boon to the farmers, retailers and small businesses. The vote and the thought that this will kill business will see the real test in the market and not in the floor of parliament house
