Sharjah, Dec 15: Ferarites-UAE, an association of parishioners of St Francis Xavier Church, Ferar, on Friday December 14 organized its maiden throwball and volleyball tournaments at the Sharjah Wanderers Club grounds on the occasion of its fifth anniversary celebration.
The tournaments, which included throwball for ladies and men, and volleyball for men, were organized in support of charity causes back in India.
The opening ceremony was conducted in the presence of guests of honour Fr Ronald Lobo, parish priest, Kokkada Church, Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief, Daijiworld.com, Joseph Mathias of Merit Freight and Logistics, Lancy Madtha of Intergrated Freight Logistics, James Mendonca, president of Mangalore Konkans association, and Robert Sequeira.
Fr Ronald Lobo blessed the event with a prayer, followed by a prayer song by Sabitha Mathias. Walter Nandalike encouraged the event and participants in his inaugural speech.
Bunts Dubai walked away with the top honours in the throwball tournaments in both ladies and men's categories, defeating Mangalore Konkans and Konkans Dubai respectively. Ace Spikers defeated Team Bhatkal in the finals to lift the volleyball trophy. The teams fought hard with their supporters cheering them all along.
Earlier, The ceremonial oath was administered by Alwyn Fernandes, sports secretary, Ferarites UAE after which balloons were released into the air to declare the event open.
Vincent Pereira compered the event and the gathering was welcomed by Leslie Fernandes, president, Ferarites UAE.
Joseph Mathias inaugurated the throwball tournament, while Lancy Madtha inaugurated the volleyball tournament.
The closing ceremony was held on the evening of December 14 with Norbert Sequeira compering the event. Roque Rego, Joseph Mathias, Olivia D'Mello and Olisha D'Mello were the distinguished chief guests for the ceremony.
The referees and assistant referees which included Sudhakar Alva and team, Moideen and team were honoured. A lucky dip draw was held with attractive prizes like a 32 inch LED TV, Samsung Mobile and four consolation prizes.
