Udupi: Pangala Church Wins ICYM Mukamar Carol Singing Contest

Udupi, Dec 19: The ICYM Mukamar, a unit of St Theresa of the Child Jesus Church, Mukamar, Shirva deanery, Udupi diocese organized a beautiful, meaningful and entertaining Christmas carol singing competition open to all Udupi diocese parishes on Sunday December 16 at Mukamar church grounds. More than 13 parishes took part in this competition.
St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala bagged the first place and were awarded a cash prize of Rs 5,555 and a memento, while Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi stood second and were awarded a cash prize of Rs 3,333, and a memento. The third place went to the team from St Anne’s Church, Thottam, who were awarded a cash prize of Rs 2,222, and a memento.
The tiny talents of the parish invoked god’s blessings before the commencement of the event with a melodious prayer song. The event was formally inaugurated in a traditional style with the beating of the drum by the parish priest of St Theresa church Mukamar Fr Victor D’souza, vice president Richard Fernandes, Secretary Leena Lobo along with the ICYM members. Fr Victor D’souza addressed the gathering. Then followed a song sung by the parish choir team in praise of Konkani.
The panel of judges which included Alwyn Noronha, Joel Rebello and Darrel Mascarenhas from Mangalore, did justice to their assignment of choosing the winning teams.
Roshan D'souza, Belman one of the young, energetic and best comperes around Mangalore and Udupi with plenty of experience in conducting such shows, was the master of ceremony. All the contestants’ teams were called on to the stage to showcase their performance. All the teams participated with a true spirit of competition and presented an enthralling performance to the audience.
After the competition, top class entertainment was presented by Band Elysium and Neena Rodrigues (India’s Got Talent fame) who entertained the crowd with their music and dance respectively.
The arrival of Santa Claus added true Christmas spirit, joy and happiness among all young and old present at the event. It was truly a very appreciable thought of ICYM Mukamar to raise funds amounting to Rs 30,000, through lucky, dip coupons to help the needy families of the parish and the surrounding areas. A lucky dip draw was held during the occasion and a cake was auctioned which went to the highest bidder Rocky D’Silva, Mukamar for Rs 9,000. The lucky dip collection amount was handed over to Fr Victor by all ICYM members along with the Santa Claus.
All the sponsors and well-wishers of the event were felicitated with mementoes and flower bouquets by the organizers during the interval.
At the end, the much, awaited result was announced by compere Roshan. Fr Victor D’souza felicitated the winners. A huge round of applause and cheer burst out among the audience as soon as the results were declared.
Bonita Alphonso, president, ICYM Mukamar proposed the vote of thanks.
The event ended with fun, filled baila session played by Band Elysium which had a large number of the audience dancing to the beat of fast Konkani numbers.
