Gujarat Picks Modi Again, Himachal Goes to Congress

Gujarat Picks Modi Again, Himachal Goes to Congress

Afternoon Update

Ahmedabad/Shimla, Dec 20 (IANS): The score was one all in the crucial battle for political stakes Thursday with the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Narendra Modi poised for a hat-trick of wins in Gujarat and the Congress wresting power in Himachal Pradesh.

In Gujarat, the BJP was headed for a win in 116 seats, just short of the 117 it won in 2007. The Congress appeared to have improved its tally marginally from 59 last time to 60 this time.

Former BJP chief minister Keshubhai Patel's Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) was left with two seats, including his own.

In the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, the BJP's Prem Kumar Dhumal government prepared to exit office for the Congress that was poised to comfortably win 36 seats in the 68-member assembly.

The BJP, which had got 41 seats in 2007, was down to 26.

One all perhaps, but it was not really even stevens, in public perception at least. The win in Gujarat, which sends 26 MPs to the Lok Sabha against Himachal Pradesh's four, dominated the political space.

The drums rolled outside the BJP office in Ahmedabad as the trends came in and Modi prepared for a third straight term as chief minister, with speculation mounting over whether he would be the BJP's man for prime minister in 2014.

Modi, who has ruled Gujarat since 2001, did not immediately come out to address his jubilant supporters.

But even before the results were clear, he sent out a message on Twitter: "No need of looking behind, FORWARD! We want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience..."

"Aaj ka CM, 2014 ka PM!" shouted his supporters as if on cue.

Triumphant at the important win, BJP leaders were exultant but fought shy of responding to that most asked question.

"(The Gujarat election) is not about PM candidate but about who wins in Gujarat," BJP leader Balbir Punj said. "Let us savour this moment."

However, Rajya Sabha MP Smriti Irani said frankly that Modi, 62, would be her candidate for the country's top post on the strength of his governance in Gujarat.

Terming it a spectacular victory, Seshadri Chari of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) echoed that view. "This election is not to elect a PM candidate.

"We had expected the number to cross 125 but still we are very happy," Chari said.

The Congress, which in complete contrast to the BJP, had put forward no one leader as its chief ministerial candidate and had in fact consciously steered clear of bringing up the minority polarisation in the state, took solace in the margin of wins.

Terming the Congress the real winner, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said the Congress message had attracted more voters.

The BJP win, he said, was expected. "The government there, the bureaucracy there has a stranglehold over the system. That is the general perception. It is important that the kind of sweeping victory that was predicted is not there. The fact is that the BJP has been contained below the number it had last time," he told a television reporter.

"We are a democracy, it can't be I, me and mine," the minister said, in a reference to Modi's style of governance.

The Congress welcomed the "thumping victory" in Himachal Pradesh.

"We are very confident of forming a government," Congress veteran and former chief minister Virbhadra Singh said jubilantly as celebrations went on outside the party headquarters in Shimla with supporters bursting firecrackers.

Dhumal, in his home constituency Hamirpur, accepted defeat and congratulated the Congress.

BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra added that the Congress had "won fair and square" in Himachal and the BJP would have to think where its strategy failed.

In 2007 BJP had got 117 seats and 48% vote share but in 2012 they got 115 seats (2 seats less) and 47% (1% less) vote share in Gujarat. Can anyone tell me what kind of 'Amazing Victory' is this? Mr. Modi was expecting 140 seats and got only 115. I am not at all convinced about this victory. Mr. Modi cannot become the PM as he is not acceptable to the people of other states. I think Mr. Nitish Kumar is more acceptable than Mr. Modi to become the PM, in case of NDA's victory. However, NDA may not win in 2014.

After reading the comments which pro and against Modi, people who have criticised Modi are either Hindu baiters or Congis. This the level of our readers judgement who are so called educated/enlihtened one.It appears that people have lost the judging capacity or compressed their brains to their respective party level.Whatever the facts may be Mr.Modi is a winner and most sought after politicians to listen and will continue to dominate the political arena in coming days especially his role in 2014 general election which will be historical.Readers pl do not stoop to the level that makes your inner voice refuses to admit/admire any facts nothing withstnding your political affiliations. After all Modi's magic is worth emulating....which is peoples verdict let us accept it gracefully. Those who have listened to his speach made for thanks giving for winning the election will agree with me that he a leader par excellence.

    @A.M Shaikh, Dubai, Belapu, Kaup,

I agree with your view. Including many BJP politicians, most of corrupt lot do not favour Narendra Modi to be PM. Do you know why? They are damn sure if he becomes PM they will not be able to wag their tail. All of them will have to spend their time in Jail for previous crimes. As he strongly believes in corruption free administration, there will be no charm or attraction for these corrupt politicians. All Corrupt Politicians from congress, BJP and other parties are convinced that it will be like digging their own grave, if Mr. Narendra Modi becomes PM. All the scams (known /unknown) will surface and all of them will have to quit India or prefer to spend rest of their life in Jail.
It is crystal clear that Gujarath developed because of corruption free administration. No scams. Lakhs of crores of public money which generally goes to politicians coffers has been spent for the development of Gujarath. That’s the reason why wise Gujarthi people elected him for the third time.
Congress knew very well that they cannot defeat him democrartically. So they have been trying their best to eliminate him from power with their typical dubious ways. Now they are silent. Next attack on Mr. Narendra Modi will be initiated by congress just before 2014 Assembly elections.
Let all of us develop a vision as suggested by Dr. Abdul Kalam. India, our country will definitely be on the top of the world.

    But, your calculations:
    Party tally 2012 2007 Diff.
    Congress 61 36 26 59 12
    BJP 115 26 117 41 -17
What do you say on the above?
If you really concerned for BJP's growth, advice them to purify from hatred speeches and actions of some of its leaders to have wider acceptance.

    - He started his dictating style of political from killing thousands of innocents there by divide society.
    - His winning continuity just maintained from communal majority by developing partially.
    - Even Sriman Atalji was asked him to maintain Rajadarma for control communal violence also he said incident very shame to show face to foreign Countries.
    - Still justification pending for pre Godra post Godra incidents.
-Projecting or become Modi PM is threat for India to remain unity because his policy dividing rules!!
-We are living in Global in fact foreign relationship very important, I don’t think so Modi can able to maintain good relation with neighbors, Arab countries moreover still he not getting at least normal visa to America.

Please hope that someone like Modi (sans his Godhra past) with strong mandate will lead at the center rather than a puppet show run by Sonia so that our country can be run like a emerging superpower. Talk of Hindutva, secular are all divisive and have very little value in this globalized village. Unless we put a powerful set of leaders in place we will continue to be paper tigers. Please remember that my view remains my view and I am not begging you to agree with me. Gujarat BJP victory was 100% sure because that state has been polarized completely and it will take decades for it to return to the mainstream, but your party had grand views on corruption in Himachal Pradesh.......what happened to all your false propaganda there? Best way to counter attack Congress Party’s Minority hangover that, BJP in Gujarat should make any Muslim capable person as Deputy CM or in other prime post. This is the firm reply given by Modiji to all Pseudo in spite of several negative campaigns by Congress as well as by few Media channels too. One thing we have to appreciate that C-Voter prediction was 120 to BJP and 58 to Congress, at present they have only 1 seat /-

you really think Congs had plan to stop modi from wining . but they didn't do it for the sake of upcoming general election.
You are telling like, Cong's had full control over Gujarat and they simply let Modi win for 3rd time, because they want to win Central election .

Congs knew before going to election that , they can not win , so only they was less campaigning from Sonia and Rahul.
and for your info, please check , the place where sonia and rahul did campaigning , central Gujarat, there Modi had won more seats then Congs.
Its said to be Congs strong hold from decade.

If BJP wants to think about being in the race for driving seat for LS polls, they have to Name NM as their candidate, otherwise they will loose badly anyways with NDA or without NDA as all the top leadership has reached fossil age except a few.

Modi’s journey from Gujarat to Delhi will not be an easy task. His ambition to take centre stage in the national politics will be next to impossible.
In the absence of any worthwhile challenger, the saffron leadership may be compelled to make Modi as its main face in 2014 polls but, in doing so, it also faces the risk of losing key NDA allies- given his image of an anti-minority leader.
While a section of BJP leaders believe that only Modi can reinvigorate the Hindu nationalist party, there is an equally strong lobby within BJP which opposes him on grounds that it will distract the minorities. For BJP, having Modi as its prime ministerial candidate could throttle the party`s efforts to recapture lost ground in northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which have a sizable chunk of Muslims and send a large number of MPs to Parliament

Modi mama has played right into congress hands. All along the congress strategy has been to let Modi win in Gujarat which is why the half hearted attempts during campaigning. They know very well that if Modi is projected as PM by the BJP, they will be able to thrash him in the General elections. More than the congress the BJP's infighting and opposition to Modi from its own allies will finish him first. Once again just like in 2002 and 2007, Modi wins the battle ( Gujarat) but will lose the war (India).......

As expected it is BJP in Gujarat & Congress in Himachal.
BJP won because development work undertaken in Gujarat. It is loosing MAINLY because of HATRED speeches and policies of its SOME PROMINENT leaders.
If BJP can purify it from HATRED and negativity it will have wider acceptability and will do well.
Congress won because it has deployed, some highly competent ministers, its secular ideology, but loosing because some of its leaders are VERY lazy.
If congress can work hard, bold in defending secularism and organizing skills, it will do well.
Corruption wise BOTH parties are same!

As rightly put by some of the commenters WIN is a WIN. The result of 2 state is actually a loss for BJP as it lost in one state and performed less in another. I have never heard BJP or Mr. Modi saying he wants to become the PM of the country - dont know why people are speculating and saying he cannot. Such arguments sound very silly to me. However, having visited Gujarat and having seen the progress there, I think Mr. Modi is a good candidate for PM. He can really bring about change in the country and lead the country in progressive path. Sometime back, the leaked US memo published in wikileaks reportedly said "Modi is non-corruptible". That speaks volumes about this man. As for what he did or did not do during 2002, he will have to be clean to his conscience and having seen him in various forums, I think his conscience is clean. Just because few commentators feel he was guilty, will not make him guilty. If one were to draw parallels between USA's policy towards Mr. Modi and USA's war in Iraq, then all the nations of the world should be denying relations with USA.

Finally congratulations to Mr. Modi and BJP for their good show in Gujarat. I think people (including majority and minority) have voted for this government by choice for the development.

Luckily people of Gujarat have understood this and are seeing development. Well deserved win for Modi. We need a leader and PM like him. He is the leader who would bring back the respect India deserves globally. The defence/army needs leader like him and not spine less.

Congress should stop blaming and stick to development without corruption to stay in this political game. Gandhi family is being used as adverstisement and they are enjoying the royalty at people's tax money. Sad to see that people are still blind supporting congress and not worrying about the country. Entire world is making fun of India due to its current political situation. Congress have failed in all departments - economy, unemployment rate, high inflation, fuel prices, corruption. Ismail Perinje...I guess you are the only one person of Gujrath"oppressed without an option" NRG living in Dakshin Kannada & KSA.
Congress is leading only in the tribal belts not Urban. What does this say ???. Congress can onlly fool the poor & less educated class in the name of Indira Gandhi or Mahathma Gandhi & Motilal Nehru's the only names Rahul Gandhi took in Gujrath rather than the MMS(10 Janpath) lead circus team. And what about the educated class ???, well i wont tell educated class will vote BJP, but they will vote for devlopment weather its BJP or congress & weather the educated voter belongs to majority or minority class. This has been proved in Goa & if not 3rd time, atleast 2nd time in Gujrath. Also the NM had to to face revolt votes form his own ex-partment(Patel). That explains some minus's , also some gimmicks by congress like making the wife of the cop who is accused to be NM's target stand for the election and trying to strike some emotional cord with the Public. So congrats for some seats for Congress.
As of Himachal Pradesh, no party has won the verdict for the second time straight, nor did the BJP do any good work there i guess to retain the Govt. So its understood and congrats for congress for more looting.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SHRMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI FOR THUMBING MAJORITY & HATTRICK WIN.

THIS IS NOTHING BUT SLAP ON ITALIAN,MMS, BABA/BABY, DIGGY UNCLE, SIBBU BHAYYA, CHIDU ETC...

MMS WAS ROARING DURING ELECTION CAMPAIGN THAT " GUJARATH IS NOT SAFE FOR MINORITIES" TO GARNER SOME MINORITY VOTE.

BUT GUJARATHI VOTERS SLAPPED HIM & CASTE THEIR VOTE TO SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI.

BABA/BABY ALSO TOLD THAT MODIJI IS DOING MARKETING & NO DEVELOPMENT.

VOTERS GAVE REPLY & BABA IS IN SHOCK.

ITALIAN ALSO BLAMED BJP GOVT. & TOLD THAT ADIVASI, POOR ARE NOT DEVELOPED.

ALL ADIVASI , POOR VOTED MODIJI & SHOWED THAT WHAT MODIJI DID FOR THEM.

WHOLE ITALIAN LED CONGRESS PARTY PUT THIER EFFORT TO DEFEAT SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI BUT ALL IN VAIN.

SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI IS LIKE A SUN & ITALIAN, MMS, BABA ARE LIKE A SMALL TORCH .

    JAI HO SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI.

I think people of GUJ have great respect for PM Singh. During campaign he said "Keep away the party who does divisive politics". That is what people of GUJARATH did..

Both state's result are in expected lines. In Gujarath, when oppressed have no option in sight it is better to align with perpetrators. Some are how Congress is also doing better than last Assembly result in Guj.

    Congragulation Sardar Modiji.

2012 again as CM 2014 as pm then only india will be safe, secured, developed under your leadership. This people mandate is big slap on face of pseudo secularist. Sardar Modiji stands for VIKAS - VISWAS -VIJAY. You are really Sardar Modiji and our hope of india.

Seems that Cong has done better than 2007 through numerous scams, corruptions, FDI, cap on subsidized cooking gas cylinders etc.

You might win this election, but you can't be projected as PM.

You are king in your own den..
