Mob Kills Man for Desecrating Quran in Pakistan

Islamabad, Dec 22 (IANS): A man detained for allegedly desecrating the Quran in Pakistan's Sindh province was lynched by a mob that stormed into a police station Friday, police said. His body was later torched.

Over 1,000 people from Sita village and its surroundings attacked the police station, located in Dadu district, in the morning to take out the suspect from the lock-up, Dawn reported quoting officials.

He had been handed over to the police a few hours earlier by residents who accused him of having setting fire to the Quran.

The situation in the village remained out of control for several hours as the mob doused the suspect's body with kerosene at the main junction of the village before setting it on fire.

Police later arrested 30 people by raiding different places. The police were yet to identify those who attacked the police station and burnt the body.

One of the FIRs was registered against unknown people for burning the Quran, the other was registered against 1,000 others who attacked the police station, killed the suspect and burnt the body, a police official said.
