Udupi, Dec 23: Spirit of unity and harmony reverberated at Don Bosco hall here on Saturday December 22 as prominent persons from the three major communities came together to share their views on religion and promote peace.

The inter-religious discourse, organized by the district minority forum was held on the topic 'Importance of Festivals in Religion'. Udupi Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Sri Sugunendratirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math and Mohammed Kunhi, manager of Shanthi Prakashana, spoke on the importance of Christmas, Diwali and Eid, respectively.

In his address, Bishop Dr Gerald Lobo termed the programme as unique and said that it is necessary to understand the meaning of and inculcate the message of Christmas in one's life.

"Christmas and Easter are the most important festivals for Christians, just as Diwali is for Hindus and Eid-ul-Fitr for Muslims. We have many festivals in India, but the fundamental message of all festivals is the same," he said, adding that Christmas is not limited to Christian community alone.

"Jesus Christ came to earth with the message of peace and sacrifice. He was not born in a rich family. He was always with the poor and the needy. He only wanted devotion and committment and nothing else," he added.

"Religion should bring everyone together and not divide people in terms of communities and sects. Everyone should live together. This harmony meet is a sign of unity in celebration," the Bishop said.

He further added, "This year we will organize such inter-religious meets during every major festival. Let us be examples of unity to the world."

Sri Sugunendratirtha Swamiji in his message said that 'Christmas is the second Krishna Janmashtami', a statement which was received with a huge round of applause from the audience.

"Festivals should not be about only spending money, they should also be about prayers, belief and devotion to god," he said, "Just as we distribute sweets, our celebrations too should carry sweetness and destroy bitterness towards other communities."

He drew a parallel between Lord Krishna and Jesus Christ and said that love is important and not war. Festivals should foster love and togetherness, and not enmity, he added.

"Unity is what god wishes from us, whatever be our community. God is the father and He wants his children to live together in peace," the Swamiji said.

Mohammed Kunhi in his address said, "Unity is the speciality of this inter-religious meet. Mohammed and Jesus both were prophets. Islam and Christianity have a lot of similarities and common elements, including holy scriptures. Hence, Muslims too have many reasons to be happy on the occasion of Christmas."

He further added, "Technology is advancing at a rapid pace these days, but religiously and socially man is moving towards disaster. Crime rate is increasing and man is competing with animals. Nobody seems to following the holy books."

He said that more programmes will be organized in the near future to foster unity and harmony among communities.

I still remember how i used to celebrate Diwali...collecting fire crackers for Diwali since 3 months in advance and crack them in one day. Nowadays people have forgotten what is enjoyment. They feel fighting and ridiculing other religions is the way of life and enjoyment.

A message of peace, harmony resounds at Inter-religious Meet. I enjoyed reading this article and I am pleased to learn that prominent persons from the three major communities came together to share their views on religion and promote peace.

The topic of the meeting was “Importance of festivals in religion”.

I appreciate every dialogue between religions. I am of the opinion there should be a never ending dialogue. That would improve a deeper understanding of one another and would promote joy, happiness, respect, tolerance, mutual understanding, peace and love.

Bishop Dr Gerald Lobo said “"Religion should bring everyone together and not divide people in terms of communities and sects. Everyone should live together. This harmony meet is a sign of unity in celebration .”

Diwali for Hindus and Eid-ul-Fitr for Muslims are very important festivals to celebrate and to strengthen their faith and meaning of life.
Christmas and Easter do mean so much for Christians.

All over the world human beings will celebrate Christmas. A festival of love and peace.

Sri Sugunendratirtha Swamiji drew a parallel between Lord Krishna and Jesus Christ and said that love is important and not war. Festivals should foster love and togetherness, and not enmity, he added and Mohammed Kunhi in his address said, "Unity is the speciality of this inter-religious meet. Mohammed and Jesus both were prophets. Islam and Christianity have a lot of similarities and common elements, including holy scriptures. Hence, Muslims too have many reasons to be happy on the occasion of Christmas."

Dialogue between religions is absolutely necessary not only in India. It shall occur all over the world to make the planet a better place to live for all.

    Best regards

It gives me greater joy to watch the photographs of people of different religions, sitting side by side and laughing. On the other hand, watching the pictures of fight-throwing stones at each other-smoke and tear gas-burning vehicles etc make me very depressed. We all belong to different religions, but when we stand on the foundation of "LOVE", we all can laugh together-march together-shake hands-hug each other-and help eacher to make a better world of peace and joy to all. " For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and you have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet"
Psalms 8:5-6. Human beings are GOD's special creation. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Well Done! more programmes required to scan people's mind to take away misunderstandings. As we become advanced and littrate people are loosing their values towards people, mangalore has been in limelight for wrong doing lets hope for the best in the coming years... let us all pray and wish good luck to each one of us...let us be ONE in the society then rest will come by own

A wonderful gathering. Different color makes the dais more beautiful. Jesus came to this world as a poor man, lived among poor people and died a very poor death. The reward for His worldly sufferings is that today He is the King of Kings, respected and worshipped by Millions. "If your enemy slap you on left cheek offer them the right cheek as well". What is touching message ! He never fought any war & no blood shed at all. He won the world without arms, without military, but, only with love. May God bring peace to every human being. Merry Xmas to all.

Communal disharmony originates in the missing parts !! Better results could have drawn had political leaders from each of political parties were not missed out from the bold and very much convincing messages about the inter-religious festivals promoting inter caste harmony. Hope all concerned parties will never give up in the future occasions. Thanks to the Wisdom of Religious Leaders and all its participants.

Three Religious Heads on public platform and greeting the people of good will: Shanti, Salaam and Peace truly heralds good times for the Society. If Christmas, Deepavali and Eid can bridge the gap between different creeds and beliefs, such an event must be organized every year without fail.

GOD has sent his messengers to bring peace and harmony among his children, prosperity with peace!
SATAN is enemy of peace, he brings temptations in people with greed, may give temporary prosperity but will surely destroy the peace and harmony. Destruction!
THANK you for your earnest efforts to bring peace in the region.

I agree whole-heartedly with views of the speakers. There is nothing above religion. Religion NEVER teaches hatred, jealousy or provokes one to fight against another. This is the main umbrella of our faith ... it is the root that fosters trust with our brethren and helps to dispel darkness away. It is the responsibility of each and everyone to strive to bring religion within their jurisdiction. Even if a small fraction of the messages preached is inculcated and taken into our daily sustenance, hatred and allied disturbances in our day-to-day life can be kept at bay and one can surely spread the message of peace to the world. The world will then be rid of all turmoils and will be a happy place to live in.
