Udupi: Bajrang Dal Protest Against Banner at Kalmady Church

With Inputs from Ivan Mascarenhas
Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SM)

Udupi, Dec 26: Chaos erupted outside Stella Maris Church, Kalmady here on Wednesday December 26 after actvists of Bajrang Dal took offence over a banner put up at the Church.

The banner shows the image of Vailankanni with a Brahmin holding a pot. The story goes that a Brahmin boy had a vision of Mother Mary and offered her a pot of milk on request.

The Bajrang Dal acivists on Wednesday gathered in front of the church and staged a protest, demanding immediate removal of the banner and an apology from the Church.

Anil Bangera, Udupi unit convener of Bajrang Dal said that someone informed him on Tuesday December 25 night that a banner hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community had been put up at Kalmady church.

"We will not be satisfied with just removal of banner. We demand an apology. Even earlier such incidents have happened, one of them in Kodavoor where a Hindu boy was made to learn the Bible," he alleged.

Though police was ready to take down the banner, the activists did not allow without an apology from the Church.

On hearing of the protest, Fr Alban D'Souza, parish priest of Stella Maris Church met the protestors and said that the Church had no intention to hurt anyone sentiments. He also assured that the banner will be removed, but the protestors were not convinced and demanded unconditional apology.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Louis Lobo, vice-president of the church said that the banner was put up on December 8 to mark the silver jubilee of Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine at the Church.

Udupi and Malpe police along with DySP Prabhudev Mane arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

As per the latest update, parish priest Fr Alban reportedly issued an apology and the matter was resolved after the banner was removed.

A case has been registered at Malpe police station and investigations are on under the guidance of SI Lingaraju.

Anil Bangera your surname suggests you belong to fishermen community whereas brahmins are pure vegetarians except a few foreign returned. Who made you brahmin to defend for their cause? Are you allowed inside the Krishna mutt? Here you show your might before the lamb of God. Can you do the same with a brahmin swamy whom you believe to be your God? This shrine is getting popularity so it irks some religious fanatics. But God is on their side and no one can harm them in any way. Church does not mean a mere stone structure. it is house of God built on faith which cannot be stolen by anybody what ever way they try.

    K.Sreedhar Khammam, Aaroosh, Mumbai,
I would be much grateful if you would kindly provide me, and DW readers with historical evidence for your claims that Christianity was spread by force upon Hindus,as you both claim in your comments.

I must remind you both once again, that we live in a secular India, where freedom of religion is our birth right, and as such, people are free to chose the religion of their choice, even if they are born under a different religion, and it is a pity that people like you like to label such voluntary conversions as per one's own emotions and choice as a ""forceful conversion""

I think it is high time that a law be enacted in India, that will prevent people like you criticising and labelling people as being forcefully converted against their will, in view of the constitutional right of every citizen of India.

Fact is christians missionaries in India are there only to covert people! Hope Indian Christians and Muslims remember how their forefathers were tortured and tormented to convert … Lets not fool ourselves (Indians) and believe that all the forefathers of Muslim and Christian population in India today converted on their own. Obviously, this was thru mass and forceful conversions.

All Indians feel free to follow the religion of your choice but remember that your forefathers were Hindus. And they didn’t into Bharat from Portuguese or Saudi like some believe they do!!

Why Mary is not appearing in my dream, is it because I am not a Brahmin and when did christianity accepted caste divisions. Two months ago in a velankanni church there was a propaganda that jesus was weepdimng and people thronged and collected jesus this water, Later it turned out it was due to leakage of sewage pipe, and the Archpishop of mumbai did not clarify this. I shudder to think if the christians portray a Muhammandan boy instead of a Brahminn boy just imagine the
    consequences it could create

This is a true story which happened in Vailankani(Madras) long ago. The lame brahmin boy was selling the buttermilk in the summer time to the passerby. One day a lady with a child appeared to this lame boy and asked for a drink. The boy gave her and the child, a drink of buttermilk. Soon after this, the lame boy was cured..He was amazed and ran and tried to look for the lady & the child. However he couldn't find her. All the people and the boy, were surprised by this miracle..They came to believe the lady to be Mother Mary. She was given the name by the people "Our Lady of Good Health" Or " Valinkani Amma". When I visited vailenkani Shrine I bought a picture of the same type and is in my home..praying always to her for the good health. On 16th of November 2012, I was seriously sick...none of the medicine worked. My husband called to Fr.Alban about my very bad situation on the phone. Immediately Fr.Alban prayed for my health and through his prayer I was completely healed. We are very sad about this incident. Fr.Alban and the parishioners our prayers are with you...May Our Lady of
    good Health bless you.

Dear Mr. Shenoy, very few people have time and patience to think deep into a picture and appreciate its meaning. I appreciate your thinking and insight. However, while living in religious freedom, it is better to think before publishing. While exercising our religious rights, its important to respect religious sentiments of all religions for better harmony. There should not be scope for any 'misunderstandings' while publishing religious posters in writing.

The picture is a famous story of Vailankanni that is there since centuries. It is not a work of art. You cannot make the boy wear a shirt and pant just because some ignorant people object. You have to be true to the story.

I don't think the priest should have apologized, taking down the banner is fine in the interest of sentiment. On the contrary, the Church should have filed a complaint against the Bajrang Dal for public nuisance in front of the church. Apologizing means falsely admitting a wrong and also encourages these divisive forces into raising a ruckus as they please.

As a Christian am totally against portraying Jesus, saints or famous Christians during worship and festival times.
    However,
One must remember it is common practice for Indian Christians to have ""Hindu"" names and follow ""Hindu"" traditions in different parts of India, and there is no need for fanatics like Bajrang Dal or others to intrefere in this matter.
As a matter of fact, Christians of T.N., Kerala, Andhra and certain parts of Karnataka are more ""Hindu"" culture oriented but are practicing ""Christian"" faith, which is their birth right which was carried since people of these areas accepted Christianity as their faith many centuries ago.
Top Christian preachers from S.India such as Ram Babu, Bro. Mahohar, D.G.S. Dinakaran and many cannot be questioned for bearing Hindu names.

But I don't find anything wrong with the picture. Offering water or milk to the child who is thirsty is a noble gesture which clearly indicates the true picture of Indian culture..

I could not find anyting in writing on the picture, saying the the boy is from so and so community. The picture could be of a Christian boy as well.

Just because of a pony-tail it is wrong to jump to the conclusion that the picture represents so and so community. Have we not seen boys with long hair, who resemble to girls if we look them from behind. Let us remember that long hair does not turn a boy into girl.

One of the main reasons for this commotion, as anyone can guess is that, this place is revered by the several people as a mini shrine, and one could see that irrespective of the religion, people come here to pray for their needs. The BD find it hard to swollow this, so trying to creat the problem.

As long as their god-fathers rule the state, they think that they can do whatever they like.

Uneducated, uncultured, unemployed and thoroughly brainwashed goons to say the least! These BD guys hardly know beautiful historical as well as religious importance of their own religion. So how can you expect them to know the evolving of Vailankanni shrine and devotion to Our Lady of Good Heath? The depicted picture and the story surrounding it dates back to 16th century and it is one of the 3 apparitions that finally led to the building of a shrine at Vailankanni and the devotion that spread across later. Mother Mary appeared to this particular boy and asked him milk for her child which he offered willingly. The place where this occurred was later renamed as Matha Kulam or Our Lady's Pond. Actually the Kalmady PP should not remove the banner instead file a case against BD for entering into parish premises and creating ruckus. The funny part is that BD guys are protesting citing an insult to Brahmin community. But I bet that none among the protestors is a Brahmin which clearly means that some unseen hands and heads are brainwashing and inciting these young youth for their ulterior gains. If the insult is for Brahmins, let the Brahmins hit the street and prove that story behind this picture is wrong and fabricated one. If not, let the BD guys apologise to Kalmady PP as well as all Catholics since they have insulted one of the sacred devotions of Catholics. There should not be any compromise with these guys because the society has tolerated them too long. Unless these people are shown their real 'worth', they would not learn lessons.

    Why to apologize ?

If they wanted Priest to aplogize, one of the Hindu Priest(Swamiji) should have come to spot & spoken to Church priest. Who is Bajarag Dal to make Priest of Church apologize?

I AM REALLY SAD TO SEE THAT BD IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE SLIGHTEST EXCUSE TO CREATE COMMUNAL TENSION IN SOCIETY. THE CURRENT ISSUE IS HARMLESS AND DOES NOT PROVOKE ANYBODY. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DO NOT WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE AND HARMONY?

Amongst those BD protesters, how may are bramins.

When the Nation has accepted this poster, why handful of these goons create turmoil. These type of goons enjoy destruction, as I am sure majority of them do not have proper job. By the body language of the police, one can understand even they are ashamed of these tugs.

Why this unnecessary trouble by BD? Cause they have no other job to do, its a true story depicted in this poster. Let them find out the truth and then protest, there is no need for an apology or removal of the poster. Police and the BD are forcing us christians because we are a minority and a easy target at all times for this so called BD goodas. I strongly condemn this act and the police action.

Religion is beneficial to humanity. It provides hope, gives people confidence,
A true beneficial religion is a flexible religion that allows us to explore all of society’s strengths and illnesses, gives us confidence in ourselves, for good way not Like BD’S same story every time disturbing the whole society

Considering another fact religion has motivated to create different party in same religion
Considering another fact religion has motivated to people fall in foolish work
Considering another fact religion has motivated different party and effected and taken away from the society peace

Example for above fact BD, BD, BD, BD, BD

Considering the Present fact that BD has done more harm than good to man (crisis, protest) I wonder WHY? If BD activities continue like this may motivate death , may huge crime as well and may huge war as well

BD Guys open your eyes and stop all these nonsense activities.

These BD fellows must have been paid by some people to create this issue. These B(a)D fellows must know that the picture actually projects brahmins in a positive light, that they are hospitable people willing to offer food and drink to people of different faiths/ communities / castes - and not as miserly, inwardly looking people with a superiority complex.

I do not see any derogatory to hindu religion in the picture. At the most it shows that all religions should coexist harmoniously in a society. Obviously there will be some elements in the society who do not want various religions to coexist harmoniously for their vested interests. I hope people in this state/country will respect each other's rights and coexist harmoniously.

The image in question is widely available in public domain.I have seen the calenders and posters of these during my visit to Vailankanni. Church leaders should file a complaint in police station against these Bajarangis for their intimidation. Do these hypocrites have the guts to go to Vailankanni and raise this demand?
