Udupi, Dec 27: Clashes erupted near Sanskrit College here on Thursday December 27 after CPI (M) activists tried to forcibly enter the Car Street during their protest against Made Snana and discrimination over serving food at Sri Krishna Temple.

The CPI (M) had launched its protest on December 21 at Kukke Subramanya Temple and flagged off its rally from Mangalore to Udupi on December 24 which culminated on Thursday.

The protestors were on their march towards Car Street and then on to Sri Krishna Temple, when they were stopped by the police near Sanskrit College. Several protestors and policemen were injured in the lathi charge that followed and admitted to hospital at Ajjarkad.

Many of the protestors were detained and later released.

During the protest, working president of CPI (M) Sriram Reddy said that such beliefs as Made Snana and Ede Snana are superstitions which should be eradicated. "Similar protest was organized before when BJP was ruling and court had ordered the government to submit its opinion on Made Snana. The Pejawar Swamiji suggested replacing Made Snana with 'Ede Snana' but the ritual is same. The government is not bothered about the people but only concerned about temples," he said.

"Differences between Puttige and Sode Maths are creating problems for people as food is not being served properly. We are not against Puttige Swamiji. Also, Pejawar Swamiji says that all are one but it is only for publicity," he alleged.

CPI(M) secretary B Madhava also called upon people to raise their voice against discrimination in serving food at Sri Krishna Temple and against Made Snana.

CPI (M) politburo member M A Baby said that similar things had happened in Kerala's Guruvayur and Vaikom temples. "All religions should support such movements," he said.

G N Nagaraj, Nityananda Swamy, K R Sriyan, Prasanna Kumar, Varalaxmi, Basavaraj, Maruthi, Shivaram and others were detained.

The protest began in the morning in a peaceful manner, but turned violent later in the day.

Tahsildar agannath Rao said policemen were not responsible for the injuries. "Policemen only tried to pull back the protesters. The protestors were not locals. They were arrogant and aggressive because of which the incident took place," he said.

People of Karnataka should understand that, some body want to disturb peaceful Udupi. They are jaleous the way Udupi is. And we should not allow them to do that.
These people dont know anything about Made Made Snana. This is not imposed on anybody or this is not compulsary to anybody. It is purely devotees wish to do it or not do it. This is issue is purely misguided to the public to take the political advantage.

    Dear Ratheesh,trivandrum,
You mentioned, communists are not interesting in power and seats.they try to equalities and better socialist situation. Its not correct. You said the example supporting UPA Govt. from outside. Its a 'safe play'. As part of UPA, got maximum benefits as partner and when the Govt. does something wrong, say we are not part of UPA. If they are not power hungry, why they are contesting the Elections. "Kittatha Mundhiri Pulikkum".

The issue is not whether local people or outsiders came for protest. The issue is the discrimination on caste basis being practised in the temple. Just because the food is offered free for which certainly there would be good turn out as large number of our people are poor, it can not be served on caste basis. This kind of new type of untouchability should be vehemently opposed by all the right thinking people. Let me know in which religious text it is said that food given free should be served on caste basis.

After the rally by these usless people, in Ajjrakadu Maidan, they forcibly try to enter Ratha Beedi. Naturally police stopped them, & when things went out of control, they had to resort to Lathicharge. Interstingly, those who where arrested had to depend on the Temple food itself for night meals. Simply no work for these people.

'Annadhana Mahadana' - be happy that food is served free to all, devotees or protestors.

Vice a versa speaking, I really wonder if the devotees had forcibly insisted all these protestors to bow before lord, then these Protestors would have required Protection from the same Police.

What has CPM done for this country? Destroyed industries, made millions jobless and instigate strikes on all sundary. The traitors should be hanged.

It seems Communist people outside our coastal districts have moved in to create trouble here. Police are rightfull in stopping the protestors. The protest look more arrogant than peace. If devotees don't wish the religious practice, they will not support the religious event. But not like these people who poke their nose in to the others business.

In Subrahmanya devotees irresepective of caste perform Madesnana, & devotees wait in que to perform the event. It is their faith & belief that attracts them, the locals & local tribe like malekudias are strong supporter of this religious practice. So is the annasantharpane in Udupi. People comming at any time are give superior food. Myself had opportunity to get food at 11-30pm in Plantain leaves. All castes including Brahmins where with us for the prasadam meals.

Point to be noted here is that devotees support the ritual & rites, & jobeless people/Nastiks/Non devotees are the trouble creaters. Had Police not intervened here, Devotees would have given answer like Subrahmanya some time back.

NEVER SEEN SUCH AN INCIDENT IN UDUPI!!! As election is nearing Siddu some what succeeded in provoking/backing these people in creating violence in BJP ruled city. I have witnessed this incident very close, All the protesters were outsiders(not locals) shouting the slogan against BJP more than the Admin of Ashtamutt. It shows their agenda is not 'PANKTHI BEDHA'& 'MADE SNANA' but to creat violence in peaceful udupi, We udupi people should not have let these Gowdas to enter Udupi.
