Udupi, Dec 27: The International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations together with Komu Souharda Vedike and other like-minded organizations staged a protest at SP office here on Thursday December 27 demanding action against Bajrang Dal activists who created ruckus over a banner at Kalmady Church on Wednesday December 26.

They also urged withdrawal of the FIR filed by Bajrang Dal against Fr Alban D'Souza, parish priest of Stella Maris Church, Kalmady over the banner issue.

The activists of Bajrang Dal had on Wednesday protested against the banner depicting Vailankanni and a Brahmin boy put up at Stella Maris Church. Despite the removal of the banner and apology from the parish priest, an FIR was lodged against him later in the day.

The memorandum demanded withdrawal of the FIR and alleged that about 200 people belonging to Bajrang Dal barged into the premises of Kalmady Church and used abusive
language against the parish priest.

The memorandum also questioned police action of asking the Church to remove the banner and filing FIR against the parish priest, instead of lodging complaint against the Bajrang Dal activists.

Secondly, the protestors alleged in the memorandum that of late, pamphlets with 'Om' printed on them had been pasted at several places in Udupi. These pamphlets contain matter that are allegedly against the sentiments of Muslims and Christians, the memorandum stated, adding that as there was no name of the organization that printed the pamphlets, it was illegal and action should be taken against whoever printed them.

The protestors also demanded action against the policemen who resorted to lathi charge against members of CPI(M) who protested against Made Snana and caste discrimination on Thursday at Udupi.

President of Komu Souharda Vedike G Rajashekar said that the people of Udupi had lost trust in police. Jayant Malpe said that Udupi had witnessed several incidents in the past where police had not taken any action against offenders of law. He also alleged clear support from Udupi Maths to police in Thursday's lathi charge on CPI (M) protestors.

Louis Lobo of IFKCA said that police assured that they would not take any action against Kalmady Church or the parish priest on the FIR filed by Bajrang Dal, and thanked the police for the same. However, Jayant Malpe refused to believe in the police assurance.

Organizations like Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, district minority forum, Jamath-e-Islami Hind, Catholic Sabha, SIO, PFI and others took part.

Its a very good move. We should fight for our rights, we have to live in this country and prosper.

Its a good sign that we join hands with the like minded organisations, as our population is small and dwindling because of 2 child policy among Christians.

The people who were offended by the banner should have approached the Parish priest and ask for an explanation. They did not want to be educated on the banner. It looks like they just wanted to create problem and get publicity. Please send a delegation to Velankanni, Tamilnadu and see if these pictures are not depicted over there. Majority of the pilgrims who come to this place are Hindus. Some of them come with petitions and others come to thank our Blessed Mother. The amount of devotion these Hindus have for our Blessed Mother is simply admirable. HENCEFORTH ALL GENERATIONS SHALL CALL ME BLESSED. Luke 1 : 48.

Until yesterday i was thinking like you about this picture in the banner. But i browsed the internet for the story of Vailankanni .i know the facts ..Nothing offensive or hurting ..It is a historical story..and that too it is a good act of offering milk..NOT a picture of sticks..fire.bombs ..blood or angry youth shouting or beating people..it is not minority ar majority...we should move away from these minority ..majority chapters and go to the next level of equality..anti currupption, science, technology, respect and dignity to men and women,,,preserving nature,,rducing plastics recycling..our youth should start and join organisations on these lines and build our country..

Sachidanand Shetty, well put. What would christians have done if the poster was other way around.

The answer is nothing. The proof that we would have done nothing is being played again and again. During the church attacks did we go about abusing the Hindus? no we did not. Instead we only asked the culprits be brought to books.

That is what makes is christians.

    Dear Sachidanand
As far as i know this picture was not a creation of Kalmady church..This is the picture with a story which is known for generations and to all who know atleast something about Vailankanni..But for people who do not know at all this picture may create thousand questions.Anyway to create chaos without proper knowledge and that too through a organisation without knowing the facts and the confusion what it might create between communities is not acceptable..As for the question as to how other communities would react for a picture of Sree Krisna offering milk to a christian boy ...well I would say as long as picture is not showing any vulgar or violent scene, organisations in christian community will be sensible enough to view it as a greatness of Sree Krishna giving milk to a hungry boy and not as offending..because these organisations are built with a vision of peace.. not violence..

It is very sad that Hooliganism is on the rise in peaceful undivided Dakshina Kannada. Those Bajrang Dal thugs are to be educated. Creating disharmony among Hindus and Christians and Muslims is their mission. When Mother Mary is presented with hindu boy in the banner, Bajrangis should have felt honoured instead of feeling insulted. These bad thoughts are only because of lack of literacy. I appeal hindu swamijees and gurus to educate acivists of BD and other hindu outfits to know the language of understanding of good and bad and real meaning of such banners. Picture is depicted in the banner as per the event taken place in Valainkani and definitely not to hurt hindus sentiments. I feel Bajrang Dal activists should approach their religious leaders before jumping into conclusion on such matters.

BD thinks their masters will rule Karnataka for ever and support whatever they do! This type of incidents may not show them in good light. How can they use absusive language towards priest? If someone does it to Hindu priest...by now it would have been a major issue and unrest! Are they taking advantage of peaceful Catholic community and terrorising them? There are enough educated and law abiding Catholic knowing constitution of India and law of the secular country! A matter of few month when state ruling party changes...peace may prevail in DK! Majority of any religion will not accept such activity.

The after explaining he route asked us from where we are. When we told him that we are from Udipi, his reply was " People from Udipi also losing the way"...That was the reputation of Udipi and Dakshina Kannada all over the state. Everybody in Karnataka were considering Dakshina Kannada people as well educated and brilliant people. Nowadays I pity our reputation.
