Udupi, Jan 1: A vain attempt to hunt for treasure was reported late night on Monday December 31 at Moodabettu near Katapady here.

The incident took place in a private land belonging to Puttu Seth, beside national highway 66.

The treasure hunters came to the spot by a Tempo Trax, which they parked by the roadside on the highway. They then walked for about 200 metres and started digging in Seth's land.

Meanwhile, a police who were passing by in their vehcle noticed the Trax abandoned on the highway. They followed in the track of the treasure hunters and reached the spot they were digging.

The men who heard the police arrive immediately stopped digging and fled the spot. In their hurry, they left behind two shovels, three pickaxes, iron rods, baskets, ropes and even a pair of shoes.

The police took the equipment as well as the Trax into their possession.

Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Walekar along with inspector Rajendra Nayak visited the spot. Efforts are on to trace the treasure hunters.
