RSS Chief Stirs Row, Blames 'Westernization' for Rape

New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS): RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat Friday stirred a controversy with his remark that westernization in Indian cities was the reason behind increasing rape cases as the country is witnessing widespread protests over the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old Delhi woman last month.

Bhagwat, addressing a gathering of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers in Assam's Silchar, said: "Such crimes (rapes) hardly take place in 'Bharat', but they occur frequently in 'India'."

"You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gang rape or sex crimes. They are prevalent in some urban belts. Besides new legislations, Indian ethos and attitude towards women should be revisited in the context of ancient Indian values," Bhagwat said.

Following the RSS chief's remark, Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh Friday said there is no basis for making distinction between India and Bharat.

"There is no basis for making distinction between India and Bharat," Singh said when asked to comment on Bhagwat's remark.

Singh was speaking on the sidelines of a function 'Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System' here.

The RSS chief's controversial remark comes days after the Dec 29 death of the young Delhi woman due to grievous injuries during her torture by the rapists on board a moving bus Dec 16.

The incident has led to loud protests in Delhi and elsewhere and demand for justice for the woman, stringent anti-rape laws and more security.

Criticising Bhagwat's comment, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Brinda Karat said, "He does not know India or Bharat and the largest number of rapes occur in rural areas".

"The Dalits and Adivasis are the ones who mostly get raped," she told newspersons.

Karat said the cases are reported by the media, and the RSS chief's comment is a "reflection of his mentality" of "turning his face away from reality".

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said the comment of Bhagwat "was a reflection of their mentality. Rapes can happen anywhere. Rapes should be stopped and the strictest punishment should be meted out to the perpetrators."

Digvijaya Singh was also of the opinion that the right to appeal of rape convicts should be restricted. "They should get only one right to appeal," he said.

He also said the age limit for juvenile delinquency should be lowered. "Nowadays children are more aware, they have access to TV, internet,.. so much that children of 12-14 understand all facts."

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Bhagwat's comments "should be put in perspective... He was referring to India's sanskar and tradition and respect for women".

"He has asked for the strictest punishment for those committing crimes against women and even advocated the death sentence...Woman empowerment and woman security forms the core of RSS philosophy," said BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad.

I just blame RSS people(Group of Brahmins, Merchants, NOT Farmers) for their role in Gandhi murder. I can't understand why police should guard their procession when they are SEVAKs.
But as some opined here he is not mentally unstable. He is mentally 100% all right. They should imbibe scientific temper. That's all what they need right now.

This is the reason why the country is not civilized even after 65 years of Independence. The blind leads the blind.Lack of knowledge of the leaders like RSS chief. Certain class of people blindly follow such leaders for the reasons not known to them ultimately resulting in barbaric acts.

What a senseless blame. Are Indians so ignorant of sex? Are taught to experiment on it. The real truth about rape, violence, abuse is mainly due to female infant killing, imbalanced sex ratio, highly educated females over males, and employment to women. Men are feeling insecure, inferior and lower then women. Hence, they want to bring back the old law of pardha system, and confinement to home making (housewife) only to take care of the husband and adore him as God. Let men accept the change in stead of blaming it to western culture. Call back all Indians from western countries if you are too much conscious of your Indian identity and culture.

    Mr. Chaddi....
Get the inteligence report from Home ministry. You will come to know that most of the sexual crimes happen in villages not in urban. When it happens in urban, it gets higlighted and village cases dont get noticed.

Rapes take place wherever vulture like perverted men exist.
Kichaka existed at the same time Krishna & Dharmaraya's times.
Good & Bad people were, are & will co-exist in any time, anywhere, everytime rape takes place- media covers them in cities more than in villages, as ordinary people going to police or courts fearing their(traumatic) treatments- worse than rape.

Mr. Bhagwat, if it was so why the NUN was raped by Mob during riots in Orissa?
Why were the women raped during Gujarat riots?
Westerners taught and encouraged them to rape these women?
Why female ratio is falling in India? Why dowry deaths? Is it also western culture? Truth is very bitter!

Ms.Tulsi Gabbard, First Congresswoman in US took oath on Bhagawat Gita as a member of US House of representatives recently. Now Mr.Bhagawat has to tell whether she is from Bharat or from India.Whether his cadres are advised not to under go medical treatment in allopathic medicine or Homeo medicine. If not why?All the two referred medical systems are from outside Bharat/India.Whether he has ordered his people to take bath only by applying pure nem paste or basan atta as both are purely from Bharat/India.All most all soaps/detergents/tooth pastes are in collabaration of western establishments.Whether he has ordered his cadres that their chilren go to only government schools of local medium, not to undertake jobs in major IT companies as their major income is from western countries.List will go on like this..
What is the basis for arriving at a decision that rapes accur due to western culture. If his view is that in villages/suburbs rapes do not occur let him check up with his partys government in Karnataka asking for statistics.Let him also get the statistics how many of MLAs/Ministers in Karnataka are pure and how many are indulgence in rape type affairs.Whether indulgence in wide spread corruption by BJP Ministers/MLAs in Karnataka is due influence of western culture?
Simply sitting somewhere in Assam brandishing 'sword shaped mustach' and defining the rapes in Bharat/India has no meaning.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat have forgotten that India played a significant role in the history of sex and it is in Indian writing one of the first literature that treated sexual intercourse as a science. Also Sex Magic was featured in a number of Vedic rituals, most significantly in the Asvamedha Yajna, where the ritual culminated with the chief queen lying with the dead horse in a simulated sexual act clearly a fertility rite intended to safeguard and increase the kingdom's productivity and martial prowess. Further, the Khajuraho temples contain some sexual or erotic art outside the temple or near the deities. A temple relief at Khajuraho features a couple in a sexual embrace with a man and a woman masturbating to either side.
Sadly in the olden days, Pre-pubescent Indian girls were sexually exploited in the name of religion. The first reference to dancing girls in temples is found in Kalidasa's "Meghadhoot". It is said that dancing girls were present at the time of worship in the Mahakal Temple of Ujjain. Some scholars are of the opinion that probably the custom of dedicating girls to temples became quite common in the 6th century CE, and they practiced prostitution. The Indian woman's position in the society further deteriorated during the medieval period when Sati among some communities, child marriages and a ban on widow remarriages became part of social life among some communities in India.
Reformists and abolitionists conceived of the devadasi practice as a social evil and considered many Devadasi to be prostitutes. The first anti-Nautch and anti-dedication movement was launched in 1882. "Their main aim was to do away with this system. Reform lobbyists were drawn mainly from missionaries, doctors, journalists and social workers. The social reform movements, spearheaded by Ram Mohan Roy and other prominent social thinkers, questioned the practice of devadasi system and pleaded for its abolition.
