Harassed Teenager Dies of Burns in Jaipur Hospital

Jaipur, Jan 5 (IANS): An 18-year-old girl died in a hospital here after she set herself on fire unable to withstand the harassment by a neighbour who insisted on marrying her, police said Friday.

The girl suffered 90 percent burns after pouring kerosene on herself and lighting a match to her clothes in Ramnagar in Alwar, some 150 km from Jaipur, Thursday afternoon.

Doctors had referred her to a Jaipur hospital.

"As she had sustained 90 percent burns, her chances of survival were very grim. She was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Sawai Man Singh Hospital. She succumbed to injuries late afternoon today (Friday)," a police officer told IANS.

A police officer said the girl's statement was recorded. The young man accused of harassing her, Rajesh Kumar Jogi, has been arrested.

"She confirmed the allegations of her family that she was being harassed by Rajesh," the officer said.

"Rajesh had threatened to kill her father and brothers if she did not agree to marry him. She was depressed over this," he said.

The officer said Jogi used to stalk the girl and constantly phoned her. "We have added sections of abetment of suicide on the man," said the officer.
