Udupi: Shocking - Man Accused of Raping Daughter, Fathering her Child

Udupi, Jan 8: A shocking incident of a man allegedly raping his daughter for nearly a year and even fathering her child was reported here on Monday January 7.

The accused, Shankar Poojary (50) of Yadadi-Matyadi under Kota police station limits, has been arrested.

As per the complaint lodged by the locals in the Kota police station, Poojary has been allegedly raping his 25-year-old daughter for the past 11 months.

Sources said that Poojary had threatened his daughter with dire consequences if she revealed the matter to anyone.

However, the issue came to light after the woman delivered a baby last month. It is suspected that the woman was made pregnant by her father.

Poojary has two unmarried daughters. His son passed away in an accident last year, and since then he has been spending the amount received as pension on alcohol. It is learnt that he used to come home in a drunken stupor and allegedly rape his daughter.

Sources said that the daughter and her mother along with the baby have taken refuge in an undisclosed location fearing for their safety.

Kota police are investigating.

Here in this case what I presume is without daughter's support how one could dare to get in to this shameful act.She too might have had evinced the desire to have sex with her father and enjoying all these days.When the matter broke out,she has taken shelter along with her new born in undisclosed place fearing safety.Whatever may be the case whether daughter wished or not,father who still got two unmarried daughters must be meted out stringent punishment for his barbaric act.Poojari-father 50 years of age-supposed to be the custodian of children,daughter the victim of her own father 25 years of age.What a age gap between them!!Both deserved to be strigently punished or to be stoned to death in front of public for bringing defame to the society/culture/family and community.But is it possible here in country like India? No,not at all.Ultimate punishment is"BAIL" here in India.That is all.

It is a serious crime by a father but he is uneducated and may be a drunkard. In our villages mostly people drink and they have no sense because of lack of education. Poor society. Govt. of India should provide education to all instead of amassing the wealth in foreign banks like swiss bank as many politicians possess. We waste our time to vote them, it is our fault. Gram Panchayat or Lok Panchayat cannot put forward our demands because it is our fault we do not complain as a unit to any body. So some social workers are required who can approach the social leaders in our area and press all people they must educate all children. This guy looks like a mental man. Those who over drink, do not know what they are doing because it is a thamasha for them. They get up only next morning.

Nothing surprising in this! There are innumerable cases which don’t come to light and mind you, I am not talking about North India but about undivided Dakshina Kannada. I have personally known quite a few such cases in DK which I came across while I was into social work almost a decade ago. I came to Mangalore after 3-4 years of experience in Belgaum, Raichur, Bidar, Bijapur etc and was astounded with the pathetic situation of women in those areas. As a ToT I always spoke how women are free from such menace in my native, how females are respected in Mangalore, Udupi etc. But my experience in DK was too shocking wherein we came across cases of women raped by father, brother, uncles, cousins, neighbours etc. Almost all these cases were first settled through compromise but women finally complained and approached NGOs, women's helplines when situation continued the same. Even the NGOs hardly did anything towards this and in most cases they too brokered compromise. The victims and their family members never ventured into lodging complaints fearing social stigma. One case that shook me to the core was that of one of my close friends who broke down just a few months before her wedding and revealed that she had been raped by her father quite a few times while she was in her high school and when she informed her mother about this ordeal, mother stood by husband, blaming the daughter. The girl left with no option, left her house after high school, stayed with distant relatives, working women hostels, completed her education and started a successful career all on her own. She's all fine today, happy with her husband and kids. But her father, mother and siblings still maintain distance from her even though it wasn't her fault. Successive parish priests (of course they did not know about rape but only about family strife) tried bringing them closer, but never succeeded. So folks this is just the tip of iceberg. Dig in deep into social structure and you will know the reality.

After the recent tragic Delhi incident umpteen rape cases are surfacing!! This particular case is very baffling in that a mentally normal 25 year old girl being abused by her own father and getting pregnant and even delivering the baby in a so called hospital and nobody in the relations or neighborhood having any doubt for 11 long months? When a child is born, the father carries it in his arms, and thanks God for the gift God has given. He swears in front of God to protect his child and be a good gaurdian and promise to bring it up teaching it true human values. A man is a father, a brother, a husband, all personalities God created to be protectors of the weak. But when we find such fathers, husbands and brothers in the society who rape thier own kin or even for that matter do this shameful act to others, then its time to reflect and understand there is something seriously wrong in the society. So when this happens, its time to get rid of such a cancer from the society. Cull them like we cull mad dogs.

This news item should be shown to Asaram Godman that the girl should have fallen to the man's feet and said "I am your daughter, please dont rape me", like he said for the Delhi rape girl.
