Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (VM)

Kundapur, Jan 10: Spoorthidhama, an organization which was established in 1993 with an objective to help the socially, economically and academically deprived and the oppressed, has today reached great heights in the service of humanity.

It was in 1992, when a group of five enthusiastic youngsters from in and around Kundapur dreamt of starting an organization to uplift the needy. It was the late Dr Desmond D’Abreo, an educationist and social activist who directed and guided the zeal of this youngsters till his last breath.

In 1993, the organization started its operation in a rented room, providing rehabilitation to 10 deprived children. With sheer determination and dedication, the work expanded and changed the lives hundreds of children, aged people and the poor.

Today Spoorthidhama resounds with the joy of giving with their various activities that have brought a new lease of life to the needy.

To cite a recent instance, Spoorthidhama gave shelter to a housewife from Gadag along with her three kids who were being harassed by the head of the family. The incident took place on January 7. The husband would often come home drunk and beat his wife and children. Unable to tolerate his behaviour any longer, and for the sake of the children, the woman sought Spoorthidhama's help and made a new beginning. The woman as well as the children are now under the care of Spoorthidhama.

Informal Education Programme

The organization runs an informal education programme for the underprivileged in an effort to bring them to the mainstream. Students who score less marks are encouraged, which not only builds their confidence level but also helps them perform well.

Centre for Needy Children

The organization is also running a center for needly children with state government aid. Abandoned, neglected and orphaned children are nourished and provided education here till they turn 18.

Adoption Centre

With government aid, Spoorthidhama also runs an adoption centre where children who are abandoned by parents or orphans are given a home to flourish and grow.

Old Age Home

Elderly citizens who are abandoned by their families, or those without shelter get a new family at Spoorthidhama. The caretakers strive to make the twilight of the elderly more joyful by giving them utmost love and care.

Rehabilitation centre for HIV-infected children

A small effort is also made by the organization in rehabilitating the children suffering from HIV. Spoorthidhaama strives hard to make them feel equal in society.

Spoorthidhama's focus is not only on the underprivileged but also on providing vocational courses to anyone interested. From tailoring class to driving, computer education and training on farming, the organization renders various courses to enable overalll development of an individual. It also provides platform to children to showcase their talents in various cultural activities like Yakshangana, drama, music, dance and several others.

Keshav Koteshwar, a founder member is the chief functionary of Spoorthidhama. It is mainly under his leadership that the Spoorthi team is putting in relentless efforts in spite of several obstacles with regard to allotment of funds from the government.
