Practice of Paid News Found in Gujarat Polls: Katju

Jabalpur (MP), Jan 12 (PTI): Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Justice Markanday Katju today released a report on Gujarat polls which claimed that the malpractice of paid news was noticed on a large-scale in the recently held elections.

Releasing the report before the media here, Katju said that the team has found large-scale practice of paid news, both in print and electronic media, in the recent Gujarat Assembly elections.

The PCI chairman was here to take part in a lecture series organised by noted lawyer Vivek Tankha.

After the Election Commission received the reports of paid news during Himachal Assembly polls, a fact-finding committee, led by Rajiv Ranjan, was constituted to keep a watch on the Gujarat elections.

The committee submitted its report today stating that the malpractice of paid news had taken place in both print and electronic media on a large-scale, Katju said.

The report will be placed before the PCI committee. After taking a unanimous decision on the issue, recommendations to nullify election of candidates indulged in such practices will be made to the Election Commission, Katju said.

In a similar case in Uttar Pradesh, the EC has nullified an election of a legislator in that state, he added.

The PCI chairman also insisted on bringing electronic media under the ambit of Press Council besides pressing for self-regulation in the media.

Presently PCI remains only as investigating and recommending authority. PCI needs to possess authority and power to take punitive actions on media who violates basic norms and ethics of journalism. To publish/broadcast paid news is indeed an unfortunate evil and a malpractice spreading in Indian media which does not cause damage only to Indian society but it also deceive their readers and viewers. In other words, media is taking disadvantage of poor media literacy of their audiences.

Mr. Ismail, with due respect, I would not go too much with the statistics. Everyone knows how statistics lead to a wrong and distorted conclusions. From the comments related to governance in karnataka on various news reports, everyone (including you and me) seems to be saying that people will vote out the current BJP government. So, extending the same logic, I dont think people of Gujarat are naive to not understand what is going on in their state. If the people of Gujarat have elected Mr. Modi and his government for the third time, then definitely the people of Gujarat are experiencing the growth and prosperity, which I dont think people on this forum have any idea about but are commenting because of the biased state of mind. I think we should accept Gujarat people's verdict as voters are intelligent.

Whoa, Whoa!! Guys, where did Mr. Katju say that BJP candidates involved in paid news in Gujarat? Atleast I did not read it in the news article above! The article also mentioned about HP elections.. Why two yardsticks?? Why the silence on HP elections where Congress won? Why only say that Mr. Modi won because of money??? I think such comments reek frustration and nothing else.

So congress paid many news channels and columnists - right Mr. Katju?
