Chikmagalur: 53 Family Members Live Under One Roof in this House!

Kadur (Chikmagalur), Jan 13 (DHNS):
When the concept of the nuclear family is catching up by fast replacing the traditional Indian joint family system, which is considered to be obsolete and an hindrance to progress, this family at Kurubagere in Kadur taluk stands out apart.

For the modern people and young generation, this family may just give a befitting reply.

This family, now, has 53 members and  all of them have been living under one roof.  The members have also been cooking food in one kitchen. Though there are too many cooks in the family, they do not spoil the broth. The family prepares 150 rotis for morning breakfast, and requires four quintal rice, four bags of ragi in a month.

Giriappa is the head of the family. His wife is Gangamma. The couple have eight sons and two daughters. All the eights sons are married. The couple have 18 grand children. As a whole there are 53 members in the family.

Giriappa was owning two acre land initially. Now, they own 50 acre land and are growing arecanuts, coconuts, ragi and paddy. To supplement agriculture, the family rears 20 cows and 500 sheeps. The family has been fetching Rs 4 lakh income from sheep and the cows supply milk to the needs of the household. Vegetables required by the family grown by the members.

The kitchen is completely under the charge of the womenfolk. There is no interference from the  male members of the family.

The women have divided their work. Every one performs the task assigned to her and in this way there never arises any problem.

Giriappa has studied only first standard. His eight sons and daughters-in-law are also illiterate. However, all the grand children are pursuing their education. The family’s first grand daughter Chaitra is pursuing her graduation, which the family members are proud of. She said “our joint family should be a model for the entire country.”

Giriappa’s wife Gangamma is strength of the family. She takes care of her daughters-in-law as her own daughters. She has not fought with her daughters-in-law so far, said Chandramma, Yashodha, Bhagyamma, Jyothi, Gauramma, Bhagya.

“The success of the joint family lies in collective decisions and taking care of every one’s needs and aspirations,” said Giriappa.

True example of love & understanding. In the modern world big companies are following the same procedure of keeping their workforce united as a team so to reach their financial goal. This family knows the secret recipe of meeting the target much earlier than the elite world. They are the true models of our society. We always find people saying how difficult it is to manage with more children or with more family members. If we know the secret of living together then I think we will not complain.Good article, authenticity missing because of the picture.

When joint families are becoming outdated due to the modernization in family structure, it is really sweet to hear that Giriappa's family is making it an example of togetherness in a world that is filled with parents and children who live like strangers .. not sparing a thought for each other. I pray that Giriappa's family be blessed abundantly.

Very nice story. These people r not much educated thatswhy they r staying together. Now a days children when they get married they dont want to stay wid their parents. Previously son may b ok wid his parents but as soon as a lady enters he will listen to her and abandon his parents thus fullfilling the scripture in st pauls letter.

This is because of non existence of current electronic device. Because of TV seriel, current joint family has broke down. Think of 1980 when there was no TV, how many joint family are there in India now as compared to 1980's. Financially, morally, joint family is the best solution in keeping harmony within the family. This is India where people love to stay together irrespecive of caste creed , religion. But some foreign elements spoils our country.

A very well organized family. What I understand from this article is that the women in the family are well respected tho' they are uneducated. This is the success behind the story.
Duties assigned to the members are well performed. There is a woman behind success of a man.Giriappa has well managed the show with the strength and support of his better half Gangamma.Had he pushed her aside saying that Kitchen is the best place for you this family would not have run. He welcomes her views too .The decisions are collective,Every ones needs and aspirations taken care.WOW! The kitchen is completely in charge of the womenfolk. I am tempted to visit this family.
God bless this family to continue the same tradition by the new generation which is moving into educated class.
3 cheers to Giriappa and Gangamma family ! HIP HIP Hurray!

The joint family concept, particularly in India has its own charms and benefits. It keeps the feeling of togetherness active and younger generation learns a lot from their elders who have gained the experience of life. Of course, in case of differences of opinion between the two generations, the older generation should tackle the issue in thier matured way, as the younger generation has to go a long way in gaining a level of maturity.

This article really touched my heart...you can never find in this modern generation living together after marriage...very very rare. Now a days two families together can not stay more than a week... I am sure...God's blessings are there specially in this family or some miracle. It is really a good example for all the modern generation where they can not adjust with one another. My full votes to Gangamma and Giriappa for having such a big family and staying together in one roof with love and happiness. Government or the Panchayat in
that area to give a special reward and award to this family. God bless all in this family with lots of love /happiness and togetherness always. May God give Gangamma and Giriappa good health and long life...!!!

Oh, Shriman Giriappa should become CM of Karnataka so that he can run our State without any infighting within same Party. I think in local Gram Panchayat Election, where people garner only 300 to 500 votes and 25 to 50 votes become decisive, concerned Candidate should try to get vote from Giriappa’s house only. In modern days Ten Brothers can stay in one house but not two Sisters together due to various indifferences, but Giriappa managed them all. Hats off to Giriappa Master
