Udupi, Jan 13: The last rites of Congress member and RTI activist Vasudeva Adiga, whose body was found in Chikmagalur on Saturday January 12, five days after his alleged kidnapping, were conducted here on Sunday January 13.

Adiga's body was brought from Shimoga government hospital to Goliangadi on Saturday morning at around 9 am.

The body was taken to his residence at Vandar amid a large gathering of mourners. The procession passed through Goliangali cicle and Shiroor Murkukai before culminating at his residence.

Shops downed shutters as a mark of respect. Numerous supporters, well-wishers, and the public in general gathered to pay their last respects.

The rituals were led by priest Purshottam and the final rites were conducted by Adiga's brother Krishnamurthy Adiga.

Speaking to media, president of Kota block Congress Shankar Kundar expressed his grief over the tragedy and said that Vasudeva Adiga was a very active member of the Congress.

"His demise is a huge loss for the people and for the party. The authorities should take immediate action in this matter and do justice to his family," he said.

Muzrai minister and district inchage Kota Srinivas Poojary who also paid his respects to the departed soul condemned the incident and assured that culprits will be arrested within a week's time.

MP Jayaprakash Hegde, industrialist Pramod Madhwaraj, K Pratap Chandra Shetty, Karkala MLA Gopal Bhandary, former Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary , president of district unit of Mahila Congress Veronica Cornelio, Congress block president Kota Shankar Kundar, Rajesh Shetty of Brahmavar block Congress, Malyadi Shivaram Shetty of Kundapur block Congress, Gurme Suresh Shetty, Kapu, Youth Congress president Vikas Hegde and others paid their last respects.

Vasudeva Adiga was allegedly kidnapped on the night of January 7 near Goliangadi, and two days later his mobile phone was recovered near the spot. On January 12, the body was found in a pond near Kadur in Chikmagalur, with a heavy stone tied to the leg and injury marks on head and neck, indicating that he was probably strangled to death.

Sources said that Adiga's mother Sringeshwari has filed a complaint in Shankaranarayana police station, in which she has named his neighbour Ramesh Bayari as the accused. Fearing arrest, Bayari is understood to have already taken an anticipatory bail. He has also been given police protection in the event of any public outrage. Police investigations are on.

    this seems to have no connection with politics. possibility of direct involvement of some local heavvy weights. Granite/Illegal crushers/misuse of public funds were few of the issues Adiga was targetting. Hatsoff to Adiga for single handedly taking on these goons keeping the sole interest of public welfare and to stop all illegal activities in and aroud Kota, Haladi Brahmavar belt.

    @Sachidanand Shetty, Mundkur/Dubai.
    Our youths are busy in watching Cricket, Middle & old aged engaged with Bars to drink. Highly educated people move to Mumbai/Bangalore for the future. This is the selfish world, people think only about money. This is the reason why we are listed under third world country. We are rich in resources but zero in developing it. We do not have challenge to come up ourselves.

    Our costal people should be united in this crucial time and should also help the Law Authorities to catch the culprit and punish them with capital punishment or life imprisonment. Else our people will lose the faith on our Judicial System and no more RTI Activists come forward to highlight the irregularities or corruption in Government Systems. If any prominent Leader of any Political Party involved in this crime should be banned for at least in next election context whether in Party’s name or as an Independent Candidate. But based on our last few years records, no culprits have been punished till date for killing any RTI Activists. I think our Law should be amended to keep the secrecy of RTI Activists while exposing the corruption or irregularity. Why our Judicial System need RTI Activists name to be published when filing the cases in any Court? They can order for an enquiry based on the documents provided and punish the concerned party if they are wrong. Sure Adiga’s effort will not go in vain but how many Adigas’ do we have to sacrifice before we stop completely the corrupt system?

    It is the greatness and simplicity of MP Jayaprakash Hegde who was all along with the people of this tiny village during the hours of grief of the family/viiagers.I have never seen involvement by any peoples representatives during /before the funeral of his follower of the constituency this way.One can see his grief striken face and concern for his people.My comment has nothing to with politics.JP Hegde is peoples leader in real sense.
