Rahul Gandhi Named Congress Vice-President, will be Party's Face in 2014

Jaipur, Jan 19 (IANS): Rahul Gandhi was Saturday named the Congress vice president, making him officially the number two in the party after his mother and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi told reporters that the decision to elevate Rahul Gandhi was taken by the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest decision making body, at the 'Chintan Shivir' at the Birla auditorium here.

"With his appointment as vice president of the Congress party today, Rahul Gandhi has been elevated to number two position in the party," Dwivedi told reporters, amid scenes of wild jubilation by Congress workers and supporters.

The supporters also demanded that Rahul Gandhi be named the Congress' prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi heads the coordination panel for the elections.

"This decision will greatly strengthen the party and the hands of the Congress president," Dwivedi said.

Rahul Gandhi's name was proposed by Defence Minister A.K. Antony and seconded by Dwivedi. Congress president Sonia Gandhi nodded in assent.

"The whole working committee appreciated the proposal with clapping on the tables and after their support the Congress president gave a nod and Rahul Gandhi accepted the post," said Dwivedi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was the first to offer Rahul Gandhi a bouquet. Thereafter, a host of leaders lined up to offer him boquets and garland him.

"The party has reposed its confidence in its most effective and accepted young leader, reflecting the strong feelings of the millions of Congress workers," Dwivedi said.

"Any election or campaign-related decision will be taken at a later stage," he added.

Rahul Gandhi's role in the coming elections will be decided by the party later, he added.

As soon as the announcement was made, supporters cheered and danced to drum beats, waving posters of Rahul Gandhi. The city sky scape was lit up with sparkling pyrotechnic fireworks.

Congress leaders, especially Rahul Gandhi's young brigade, wholeheartedly welcomed the move.

"He will try and live up to the expectations of a new India," said Minister of State for Human Resource Development Jitin Prasada.

Terming Rahul Gandhi's new post as a "game changer" for the Congress, Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh said he has "brought about new thinking in the party" and his appointment reflects the demographics of a young India.

Asked whether Rahul Gandhi would be pitted against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, Singh said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had not as yet decided on its prime ministerial candidate. Modi is being touted as the BJP's frontrunner for the top post.

However, he added that Rahul Gandhi would "definitely be the face of the Congress" in 2014 and the party would choose its prime minister after coming to power.

"When he is the face of the Congress party, when we come back to power in UPA-III we will support him (as PM)."

Party spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said Rahul Gandhi will be the "chief campaigner" for the elections, but the "high command" will take a final decision on his prime ministerial candidature.

Rahul Gandhi Named Congress Vice-President ,ok what will change in congrs nothing.

Latest development of Diesel price hike by congs Govt .Indian public have short memory.

Here we can recall Jaipal reddy who resigned bocz of this oil deregulation policy ,forced by reliance and other oil companies .he was against giving oil companies full power to hike the rate.

but congrs made him to resign and made moily as Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister.

So making Rahul Gandhi as VP nothing is going to change.

P Chidambaram is better than RG but unfortunate he don’t have Gandhi surname for PM or VP post.

If India really needs good leaders or Prime Ministers,we have to sow the seeds of national love, honesty, sincerity & political education among our children. If we succeed in this, one day in future we might have shettys, barrys, pojarys, pintos or nayaks as a prime minister of India. If we fails, our chidren will think about migrating to other countries.

Is there no able candidates in Congress? I feel, most of the MPs in Congress are rejected by the voters. Still they are continuing in good posts to loot the country.
@ Mr. Ismail, KSA, everyone know that, Rahul is young, energetic, handsome, cute etc....All these qualities only made him to lose his deposit in his constituency. It has been proved in Mangalore youth vehicle rally that, there is no youngsters in Congress.
Here, congress is meant only for Gandhi family.

Congrats Rahul, we support you as long as you don’t involve in corruption in Indian Politics unlike your forefathers, Grand Mother and Mother did. I think corruption may not be required in your life since you have looted ancestor property which will last for your next few generations. Stop pampering minority and ignoring majority. Think twice before you talk about RSS and SIMI or PFI.

    You are 100% right.
    Rahul was always No.2
If Congress was voted for 2nd term,
it was peoples verdict. Most of the people approved his being No.2
If Modi was voted for another term by people of Gujarat, that too is peoples verdict.
Many of us know for so many terms Jyoti Basu, (W.B.) was elected!
People always choose best among the available. It is stamp of approval!

Well said Rajiv,Bantwal. CONG is most corrupt as they ruled above 70% of time after Independence. JO PAISAWALA HO SIKANDER. If CONG want to be super party they need to do the below.
    1. Elimiate corrput MPS and keep young dedicated Selfless candidates for the election.
    2. Implement LOKPAL
    3. List people of Dons who has multi billion dollars in swiss banks and bring back to the progress of our country.
But we know as usual it will do absolutely nothing on above subjects.

One of the historical decision in making of would be PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA.I think this decision will have a far reaching effects on the morale of the Congress Party/well wishers and workers.Though, Congress just short of naming PM candidate,it is virtually ion in disguise for the coveted post.

Now right wing political leaders and supporters focus on RAHUL Gandhi out of jealous and that may benefit RAHUL Gandhi indirectly. Being Congress PARTY PAN-INDIA political party in Indian political history, besides the policy and programs for all communities and on board for all religion caste, creed, communities and folks,I think with UPA constituent RAHUL GANDHI is number one Contender for the coveted post. Interestingly, unlike his father RAJEEV GANDHI elevated to the COVETED post with out having enough on hand political knowledge or experience. So I think RAHUL GANDHI will pick up the pace having vast political and current affairs of Indian political landscape.

News: "The whole working committee appreciated the proposal with clapping on the tables". If somebody opposing the nomination what will be his or her fate? It is better to clapping on the table with angry also. No one doesn't know whether he clapped with happiness or angry. Congress means only Gandhi and family again proved.
