My mother cried, she understands power is poison: Rahul Gandhi

Jaipur, Jan 20 (PTI): "My mother came to my room and cried... because she understands that power is poison," Rahul Gandhi said today in a highly emotional speech after taking over the new mantle.

Striking a personal note, the 42-year-old leader in his maiden address as party Vice President, recalled the moments when his mother and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi walked into his room last night.

"Last night each one of you congratulated me. My mother came to my room and she sat with me and she cried... because she understands that power so many people seek is actually a poison," Rahul said at the AICC session here.

He recalled the time his grandmother and the then Prime Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by security guards with whom he used to play badminton as "friends" and how his father Rajiv Gandhi, who was himself "broken inside", showed a "glimmer of hope" to the people.

The young leader received a standing ovation by the audience which included Sonia and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he said "We should not chase power, only use it to empower others." He said his mother could see that power is poison "because she is not attached to it. The only antidote to this poison for all of us to see what it really is and not become attached to it. We should not chase power for the attributes of power. We should only use it to empower the voices."

Rahul recalled that as a little boy, "he loved to play badminton. I loved it because it gave me balance in this complicated world. I was taught how to play in my grandmother's house by two police men who protected my grandmother as my friends.

"Then one day they killed my grandmother and took away the balance from my life. I felt like I had not felt before."

Rahul recalled how he knew his father was "broken inside" and "terrified of what lay in front of him".

"My father was in Bengal and he came back.... It was the first time in my life that I saw my father crying. He was the bravest person I knew and yet I saw him cry. I could see...I was small, but I could see my father was broken. They had taken away his mother and he was broken. In those days our country was not what it is today.

"In the eyes of the world we had nothing, we were worthless.... Nobody thought about us. That same evening I saw my father addressing the nation on TV. I know like me he was broken inside. I know like me he was terrified of what lay in front of him. As we spoke in that dark night, I felt a small glimmer of hope.
"It was like small ray of light in the dark sky and I still remember what it felt. The next day I realised that many people had seen it as well."

Amid repeated applause from the gathering during his 45-minute speech, Rahul said "as I look back... I have a political career of eight years and 42 years old...I could see that it was that small ray of hope in the darkness that helped changed India into what it is today."

He said that he realises he has a big responsibility in front of him and that people are standing behind him.
Rahul said without hope nothing can be achieved. "We can have plans, we can have ideas but unless you have hope, you cannot change."

The leader said Congress is the symbol of hope. "Congress party is now my life, people of India are my life. I will fight for people of India and for this party. I will fight with everything that I have."

Mr. Alfred, Mumbai, Muscat your comments are very sensible. The way some people appreciate Gujarat's development under modi, whole India should have been there getting jobs instead of Gujaratis flocking in Maharashtra for jobs. Also, people would not have migrated to Manipal & Gulf, instead would have migrated to Gujarat. Well said. Keep it up.

There are two political leaders who were thrown out for praising Mr.MODI (i remember only one)
1.Kerala,CPI(M) Leader Abdulla Kutty was banned after praising Modi..now he is in Cogress
2.When COngress leader praised Modi in Gujarat open conference,Modi said " Pls don't praise me,your madam will close the door for you" .(luckily he was not kicked out)
Jude..you have visited many places..I appreciate that..but you didn't cultivate the habit of appreciating good thing..sometimes YOU HAVE TO APPRECIATE YOUR ENEMY'S GOOD WORK TOO...good luck boss..

Yes, I get it. As a mother myself, I completely understand. You are a doting mom. You think your son is a genius. Even when his teachers, your neighbors, their grand-aunts, in fact, the whole world tells you that your boy has an IQ of a doorknob, you do not agree. He is your son, and you are firmly convinced that he is destined for great things.

When he s out of school, you blame it on the teachers. When he can't get a job on his own merit, you think it is the employers who are at fault. You get him a job using your influence, he fails miserably at that too. You curse the cruel world.

You cheer loudly at his smallest accomplishments. He takes a local train ride in Mumbai, you celebrate like he has summited Everest.

He is 44, unmarried. He has no degree nor does he have a job. In fact, he cannot list a SINGLE accomplishment of his own. Naturally, sonny boy is a bit depressed. He is tired of the robot you bought him some time ago. He wants a new toy.

When he asks for something, you never hesitate to give it to him. You will beg, borrow and steal, but you will get your precious boy what he wants! I totally get that. You are his doting mamma after all! Most mothers would have done that.

Only difference is, while other mothers might buy their sons a motorcycle or a car, you want to give your son a whole COUNTRY to run!

    Lady, you certainly dream big!

Rahul's speech was poignant and straight from the heart. I strongly feel he should not have taken the position as same puts his life in danger like his father and grand mother and that could be the reason his mother cried -the fear of losing her son. But he was not a coward and took the position to work towards improving the system and the country. What are we doing, other than being judgemental and criticising others. How many of us are willing to trade places and do the kind of work he is doing. Go down to the masses at different levels, travel extensively , visit remote villages, eat with dalits and so much more which one is not aware of.
He comes across as a completely genuine and honest person. Give him his due. What he has spoken is facts and not fiction to say its scripted well - Can we deny same?
What dynasty rule are we talkin about when they have sacrificed their loved ones for the country.

So I can not say they are much better than Indians. Simple reason is all are equal in that particular place and time. About 89.1% of the population of Gujarat are Hindu.[22] Muslims account for 9.1%, Jains 1.0%, Sikhs 0.1%, and Christians 0.5% of the population.[22] Amongst Hindus, the deity of Krishna is famously worshiped in His form of Shrinathji throughout Gujarat.

Majority Hindu in Gujarat even though they never attack on

    1) Church
    2) Masjid

With the elevation of Rahul as the No.2 leader in the party definitely Congress has gained upper hand than BJP wherein its current President has been nominated for second term. While Rahul's elevation was unanimous there is serious discontent among rank and file of BJP as regarding Gadkari's ion as party chief for second term.In fact it is a fact that BJP is a brainless party because no responsible national party will nominate a person facing charges.Yedyurappa of Karnataka was made to resign by this Gadkari for the same reason, how he can voilate his own norm. Now it appears that Rahul will dominate Congress party affairs on a full scale and it will be difficult for BJP to stand against Congress in the coming general election in 2014.Biggest advantage for Congress is that it has a strong system of High Commanding where as BJP lacks very seriously on this count.Biggest disadvantage for BJP apart from this that it has a mentor called RSS which is also lead by brainless i.e., Mohan Bhagavath.RSS has no history of doing political lead for full term.It can do only a hotch potch job as done in Karnataka.RSS works on a outdated technology and by the time it comes to know its weakness time comes for next elecion. If one look at Modi's type of political management it is a cler indication that by keeping RSS away he could do the wonderful job.In fact he needs to be complemented fo sailing against RSS as far as acting as a CM of a best managed state.RSS is no more a clean organistaion like before and it has tasted best the corruption in Karnataka. For those who see Rahul as 'baba' or 'amul baby' only 2014 general election will tell the true face of this guy, definitely it will not be favourable for aimless/wrongly mentored party BJP.In fact BJP should have nominated well experienced persons like Yashwant Sinha,Rajnath Singh or at least Sushma Swaraj though she has also hands in gloves as far as Karnatas corruption is concerned.Jaitly can be a good lecturer in a college.

People tend to be emotional when pained or while they are in grief. People also become emotional when they are overjoyed and surprised. Rahul Gandhi was indeed emotional while speaking about the assassinations of his father and grandmother. Definitely these emotions were not the result of joy or surprise on becoming V.P. of the Congress Party since his elevation to the No. 2 position was already expected. The nation would have been taken by surprise if the sons of either the late Rajesh Pilot or Madhavrao Scindia (both loyal congressmen with clean records) were made V.P. of the party. Elevating R.G. to the No. 2 position in the Party was all preprogrammed. The nation is not all surprised. So why all this hue and cry on his becoming the number 2 man in the party? He was and still is the No. 2 in Congress.

Are Indians foolish? The whole speech was scripted so well....hats off to the person who made this speech for Rahul Gandhi, it was evident that it was not him because he was simply reading it out.If he thought that he was Obama then he is absolutely wrong. After the speech he goes and checks with his mom as to how was it?
That was so very kiddish...how can we ever consider him a Prime minister. God forbid he becomes, he would take every decision based on his moms decision, then whats the difference between the current PM and him???
I feel as an educated layman of India, the right PM candidate has to be Modi. Yes he did make a grave mistake but this man needs his second chance, he definitely regrets his past and hence is making the present wonderful for the people of Gujarat....imagine if he is the PM, how wonderful it would be for the people of India?!

After the fall of Congress in 1998 and NDA came to power, Congress was without able leader and started crumbling. It was then, the late Arjun Singh nominated Sonia Gandhi's name as President of Congress Party and she had successfully led the party to power in 2004 and 2009.

In 2004, there was very timid chance, Congress could come to power but because of NDA corruption and over confidence, Congress & its allies came to power.

No doubt 2014 is really a challenging election. Rahul Gandhi's elevation as VP has definitely shaken the opposite party. After all no doubt, Rahul Gandhi worked hard to create the leadership image. Definitely his detractors will oppose him and his competitor's in political party will dislike him. But he is accepted by the CWC. We wish good luck to Rahul Gandhi.

Yesterday Shinde has accused BJP/RSS of Hindu terror. This statement of his is bound to boomarang on the Congress, unite all Hindus and favour Modi. These non entitities like Mani Shankar Iyer,Shinde,Salman,Digvijay, etc are going to do more harm to Rahul than help him.The problem with this sycopancy party is that they cannot live without a member of the Nehru/Gandhi family. The coming elections will teach them a lesson.

Mr. Jaimini P.B. First get all your facts right because all that you are writing about development in Gujarat is completely wrong. This sort of development only exists in RSS and BJP propaganda manuals who believe that a lie repeated 100 times becomes truth automatically. Just by giving some sops to the rich industrialists who then sing songs glorifying Modi does not make a state developed. Have you visited Gujarat any time during the last 10 years? I have visited Gujarat 4 times. Just for your information the roads and infrastructure in Tamil Nadu is far superior to that of Gujarat. My boss who is an european and who does not care for the congress, BJP or any political party or for that matter indian politics has visited Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmadabad. He told me that Ahmadabad was the worst amongst all the indian cities he had visited and believe me, I did not put words in his mouth. For generations we know Gandhi family has been in Congress party and contributed immensely towards Indian politics. In the process they have sacrificed their precious lives that is of Smt.Indira Gandhi and Sri. Rajiv Gandhi. I am sure Mr. Rahul Gandhi will work hard for the betterment of Indian people, especially keeping youth in focus. I wish the very best for Rahul in his newly elevated post. Jai Ho.

Yes, this joker amul baby is reading a script written by manish tiwari and digvijay to tell cong-indira workers that his mummy cried yesterday. Just imagine this simple sentence could not also be said without a script. By the way during his entire 9 years in parliament he spoke for less than 10 minutes. Now let us see which jokers are saying he is fit to lead the country!

Mr.Jude...First Let me tell you that I am not RSS man. I am the one who praised Mr.Modi's work in Gujarat. So,I have to reply to your Circus Comment. If you thiink development means Circus, then I can't blame you. I have to blame your school teacher first.

Before becoming PM,one has to show what his achievement is ! Can Rahul Gandhi show ? He can show only his ATM card. Mr.Modi has changed Gujarat into Dream World.Thats why US and UK diplomats started visiting Modi.Do you know that Gujarat is the 2nd highest developed state in the World ?
Do you know that Highest number of Muslims are working in Police Dept in Gujarat. It ranks first,Kerala next.
Do you know that there is no communal violece for the past 10 years in Gujarat.
Do you know that Mr.Modi's men won some seats in Muslim dominated areas.?
Do you know that Literacy and Employment ratio is higher in Gujarat ? It ranks first again.
If you call these developoments as Circus..Sorry..even Brahma can't convince you.Last but not least..If you think I am BJP supporter,sorry..you are mistaken..I support only those who do Development..and not PARTY..

Hahahahahaha, so many negative comments by chaddies. It seems like they are themselves seeing the writing on the wall for the BJP.The comments are a sign of nervousness and total mental disintegration.. Jaitley calls Rahul's elevation dynastic as if he is imposed on the nation. He forgets that it is the people of the country who have a say and it is they who will decide if Rahul Gandhi should lead the country or not. The scene today is that 99% of the chaddies are already suffering from a severe ailment of fear and have already given up. They very well know that the circus antics of Modi will never work outside Gujarat.

You had a golden chance when thousands of people, mainly youngsters were protesting against Delhi Gang Rape case. But you missed it.Forget about your presence, you have never uttered a single word about it.Please avoid TAKE IT FOR GRANTED policy.
I think you know very well that you have to fight with one of the leaders who changed the image of Gujrat in world map.For your information,I would like to remind you that in 2001,Gujarat took a loan of Rs 50,000 crores from World Bank. After 11 years,in 2012 Gujrat deposited Rs.1 crore in World Bank ! Future India needs leader like him.Can you perform like him ? Can you show courage where your grand mother Smt Indira Gandhi showed in 1971 war or at the time of Blue Star Operation in Golden Temple ? OR you just go to ATM machine and withdraw money to show everything is ok..? Please think and work..All the Best..

You have no clue who is Rahul. Do some research. In fact, technically he hasn't even got the citizen of India, doesn't have the qualification (thrown out of Harvard) and intellect to run a country. Originally his name is not even Gandhi, he is an insult to the original Gandhi family. He is the same person who said politics is in your pant and shirt. Dumber people support dumb people.
