Mangalore: Fun all the way as Panambur Beach Festival kicks off

Mangalore, Jan 25: The three-day-long Panambur Beach Festival, organized by the district administration and the Beach Festival committee, in association with the beach development board, as part of Karavali Utsav-2013, was inaugurated by deputy speaker of the legislative assembly N Yogish Bhat at Panambur beach here on Friday January 25.

The programme was inaugurated symbolically by releasing a pigeon and flying kites.

Deputy commissioner N Prakash, deputy mayor Amithakala, Panambur Beach Tourism Corporation CEO Yatish Baikampady, Nithin Kumar, Premanand Shetty, Shakila Kava and others were present on the occasion.

Speaking after the inauguration, Yogish Bhat said that Goa has a coastline extending 120 km, and has developed to a great extent. "We have a vast coastline, hence there is wide opportunity for development. The islands in the surroundings have to be recognized and converted into tourist hubs by introducing recreations like boating, dolphin parks etc, while also adhering to CRZ guidelines," he said.

"Several tourism development projects have been planned in Mangalore, such as 3D planetarium in Pilikula, golf court and aquamarine park in Bengre and many others. All these projects are in the final stages of tender approval," he added. 

Addressing the gathering, Yatish Baikampady said that nearly 2.5 lac people are expected to arrive on the three days of the festival. "The Coastal Security Guards have helped us by deploying two interceptor boats in the shore on all the three days. A variety of cultural, food and musical fests will be held during this event. The Festival will end with a performance by the famous ‘Euphoria’ band," he informed.

Kite festival by ‘Team Mangalore’, dance, music competitions, ‘beach baby’ – a competition for children in the age group of 3-5 will be held. The kite festival will be held on all the three days.

On January 27, skating competition for school children will be held at 8 am. At 11 am, swimming, boating, sand sculpture competitions will be held.

Tight police security has been deployed at the beach as a large crowd is expected on all three days.
