Mangalore: Lady Goschen, Wenlock hospitals to be renamed?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Jan 27: Wenlock and Lady Goschen hospitals in the city may soon be renamed after Kudmul Ranga Rao and Rani Abbakka, respectively, if Yogish Bhat's proposal in this regard gets passed by the government.

Legislative assembly deputy speaker Yogish Bhat placed the proposal during a discussion on developing Wenlock and Lady Goschen hospitals, held at Wenlock hospital here on Saturday January 26. The meeting was chaired by district incharge minister C T Ravi.

During the meeting, Bhat's proposal to rename Wenlock hospital after Kudmul Ranga Rao and Lady Goschen hospital after Rani Abbakka was seconded by MLC Monappa Bhandary. C T Ravi asked them to follow up on the matter and take necessary action.

"With the help of MRPL, the capacity at Lady Goschen hospital will be increased to 500 beds, and tender has been approved for development works worth Rs 21.7 lac.  Also, GNM nursing hostel will be built at a cost of Rs 90 lac and work on the same has begun," said Yogish Bhat.

C T Ravi said that an action plan should be chalked out so that the proposed works can go on smoothly, and that all decisions pertaining to the development of the two hospitals should be brought to the notice of Yogish Bhat and the DC.

During the meeting, it was decided that a new X-ray machine will be bought. The district health officials were directed to submit a report on MRI machine maintenance at the hospitals with 6 days.

Dakishna Kannada DC N Prakash, CEO of ZP Dr K N Vijayaprakash, commissioner of MCC Dr Harish Kumar, assistant commissioner Dr Venkatesh, Dr Saroja district surgeon, Dr Shakunthala director of Lady Goshen and others were present.

Dinesh Poojary, I have no problems whatsoever to name the public places after public figures, if they have done extra ordinary work in their field. It is highly inappropriate to re-name those places after a few years with ulterior motive to appease certain class of people. Example: We can name a brand new hospital after Mr. Yogish Bhat. I have no problem. After a few years, some other politician come forward and re-name the hospital, then it is not only inappropriate but also an insult to Mr.Bhat and people who regarded him.

If you are naming any new places after historic figures, also remember Kunhali Kutty, Rani Abbakka's Army General who did the strategic planning and fought the battle efficiently.

Instead of changing the names of hospital, the state government should focus on giving better facilities to public who avail benefit in these hospitals. It is appalling that Lady Goschen hospital which is over 150 years old yet to get proper infrastructure. Mere change of names does not do any good. Instead of changing the names these hospital, government can construct a hi-tech hospital by naming them Rani Abbakka and Ranga Rao which will benefit poor people. Nowadays, poor cannot afford medical treatment end up in losing lives.

    Mr. Dinesh Poojary,
'English should be like Uppinakai for Oota.'What a beautiful sentence. Can you have the delicious Oota without ruchikara uppinakai. So at last you have agreed that you cannot live without this ruchikara uppinakai(english).
You have forgotten to mention that in Mangalore there is one more local language Konkani and Mangalore is also called Kodial or Konkan Gao and our coastal railway is called Konkan Railway.
Konkani is the ONE AND ONLY ONE language spoken by hindus, muslims and Christians also spoken by people in Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala states.
Konkani is also included in the 8th schedule of Indian Constitution and also as a 3rd language in the institutions.Konkani is gaining popularity & widely spread all over the globe. I am proud of this language which is my mother tongue.Even tho' I studied in english medium,I did not neglect Kannada or tulu as you understand from my comments.
So my point is if at all we need a change in the names of these hospitals why cant we name after some Konkan who has bloomed and faded in Mangalorean soil like a violate.

The govt must first consider rebuilding the demolished hospital which is the need of the hour.Nowhere any structure is demolished without a concrete plan. It is very unfortunate that such a thing has happened. Even now its not too late. The authorities should chalk out a plan to build the hospital at the earliest than wasting their time in renaming the hospitals.

The King George Medical University, Lucknow (U.P), established in 1911, has been a frontrunner among medical education institutions in the country. The notable contributors being Maharaj of Balrampur, Maharaj of Ayodhya, Raja of Jehangirabad, Rana Sheoraj Singh and Nawab Yusuf Ali along with the help of British Indian government. Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone on 26th December 1905 on a plot of land donated by Government on the bank of River Gomti and is serving the society since last 100 years. However, in recent years the name of the University has become a political issue between Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party, with both of them changing the name when they voted to power. The name had been changed to Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University by Miss Mayavathi .When the Samajwadi Party won the Uttar Pradesh state elections in 2012, the name of King George's Medical University was restored. The name blame game continues as the power chair changes every time, without any scope for improvement. Similar situation might happen here in Mangalore, as politicians are more concerned about naming than contributing for improvement. Congis named the Karnataka state Medical University by Rajiv Gandhi Health University, only to please the Delhi boss!! They must have named it as simple Karnataka Health University or some kannadiga medical personality. Now it is the turn of BJP. All are same feces of different coins. Time to kick them all…

I agree with your points. If someone has really done some significant contribution to our city, country or world, let us have his/her name. But here the things are different. In many places their names have been put just because they have ruled us as mayor, corporator, head of city/state etc. If this is valid for you, we can have Yogish Bhat Road, Palemaar Road, Gulzar Banu hospital, UT Khader circle, Nalin Road etc etc. I know you will not agree for this and none of us will...

English people had very difficulties in pronouncing indian names. In my previous company our client used to visit our office and stay with us for some time. She could easily pronounce 'DINESH' but she never able to tell my friend name 'GURURAJ' even after much practice. She used to call him as just RAJ.

They made BENGALURU to BANGALORE, KAPU to KAUP just for their convenience of pronouncing it and for nothing else. Similarly Ladyhill, Pumpwell had their local names earlier names.

In Bangalore you see COX town, FRAZER Town, Dickenson Road. What contributions these cox, frazer, Dickenson have done except ruling us?

Dear Sachidananda Shetty, for your information, a road in Des Plaines, USA, leading towards Maine East High School, where Hillary Clinton did her high school education, is recently named after Kalpana Chowla by the Municipality. There are several places named after prominant Indians and one can see the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in almost every State in USA.

There is nothing wrong in having foreign names in Indian soil. After all, Britishers are also part of Indian history. English language is one of the best contributions we got from British. Because of our narrow mindedness, we have to suffer for 60 years after the independence. We could have overtaken Japan and China in developments long back because of our advantage over English language. Self-centered policies such as Swadeshi, exchange regulations etc. prevented us from doing so.

Since we have loosened up our narrow mind to certain extent in the recent years, the country is booming economically and we still have long way to go.

The decision making authorities in government - legislative, administrative and judiciary, must make a study tour to western countries. There is lot to learn from them.

A frog in the well will never see the ocean unless it jumps out of it!

Use of english should be limited to its NEEDS. I don't hate english. Both English and Kannada are important to me. But I love my mother tongue a lot and I use it wherever possible in my day to day activities. That is why you see me here as one of the most Kannada Commentators in daiji.

Mangalore's local language is TULU. What is wrong in going local language, personalities name?

    Bangalore became Bengaluru..
    Bombay became Mumbai..
    Madras became Chennai..
Calcutta became Kolkata.. So why do we need english name for places of MANGALURU/KUDLA?

I am a Kannada medium product. I will send my kids to English School or any very good Kannada schools because I need to go along with the current world. But I will practice Kannada at home. I am reader of Daiji english forum. But we get kannada daily at home. I used to get English Daily at home few years before until I became fluent in English.

I would suggest Lady Goshen Hospital to be renamed C.T. Ravi Hospital and Wenlock to Yogesh Bhat Hospital.
Well on a more serious note, these useless fellows are good for nothing. There is no development worth the name from this rotten and corrupt BJP Government and that is why they think they are contributing something by renaming the institutions that have been in service to the poor people for decades. Please stop fooling the people you politicians. We want progress and development and not renaming cities or roads or hospitals. If you cannot do anything good for the people or the place, just shut up and do what you are best capable of doing - looting the state and the country. Who was Lady Goschen?

Many citizens may not be aware why it is called the Lady Goschen hospital. (It is another matter if her name even is misspelt very often.)

George Joachim Goschen, 2nd Viscount Goschen (October 15, 1866 – July 24,1952) and a British politician, was a member of parliament from 1895 to 1906 and later governor of Madras from 1924 to 1929.

His father, George Joachim Goschen, also was a politician and his mother was Lucy Dellay. Their ancestors hailed from Germany but had later moved to UK. (That explains the German-sounding name.)

The Second Viscount also served as the parliamentary secretary to the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries from March to June 1918. In 1924, he was appointed governor of Madras and after serving in that post, he acted as the viceroy of India from 1929 to 1931. He was knighted in 1921 and made a GCSI in March 1924. He was also a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom.

Goschen fell in love with Lady Margaret Evelyn-Gathorne Hardy, the youngest of five daughters of the Gathorne Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook. She was eight years older to him. His father was dead against this match and used his influence to have him posted to Australia. The son faithfully obeyed his father's diktat, yet, after his return from Australia, he married his lady love on January 26, 1893. Lady Margaret Evelyn-Gathorne Hardy later came to be addressed as Lady Goschen.

The undivided South Canara district was under the Madras Presidency until the reorganization of states in 1956. So when Goschen served as governor of Madras, Lady Goschen possibly accompanied her governor-husband every time he visited Mangalore. The children's hospital in the city was refurbished and renamed as Lady Goschen hospital during his tenure, around 1926. George Goschen died in 1952 at the age of 85.

Many officials of the Raj days have contributed to the growth and progress of Mangalore, like Cubbon, Rice, Wenlock, Sturrock and Goschen. The memory of John S Stu

When our administration wants to fool people with development, that's when we change the names, strike, call for bandhs, build terrible roads, no pathway where people can walk forcing them to walk on the roads, no enforcement of traffic laws (half the buses and vehicles in highway from Udupi to Mangalore don't have proper working signal lights).... Then you call our pride and change the names and make the life of people difficult as than rickshaws and taxis take people to unknown destinations because they want to loot people by misguiding people because of these name changes...

And we can call this development... Elect the same leaders again and again because they belong to our casts or religion... Then these leaders waste their 5 years visiting temples and inaugurating functions, marriages of people in their constituency!

Then there will be an by election, or panchayat election, or some other election.. and these leaders have no time again for governance and administration!!
Do we need these kind of leaders ?? Do we need this kind of development ?

I think the ministers should let these old names and focus on improving the infrastructure... renaming won't help anybody!

If at all Wenlock hospital has to be re-named after the freedom fighters, it can be named after Mangalorean soldiers who fought the World War II against the Nazis.

The freedom struggle did contribute for the independence the final decision of granting independence was made in exchange of drafting Indian soldiers to fight for the Britishers against the Nazis.

Quite a few Mangaloreans joined the Military in early 40s and died in action. Their families lived in poverty for generation.

Since the glorified heros already have some monuments named after them, we should think of remembering the unsung heros of WW II.

India as it is a defacto kingdom of the nehru family every landmark is getting named and renamed after nehru, indira and rajiv it's high time all the landmarks, Government Institutions reflects the name of local personalities and freedom fighters rather than those who had links with east India company and or the nehru family alone.

Indeed Expected matter, Nowadays few VVVVIP rather then concentrating their assigned role running behind changing d name of hospital, institute, finally make sure that you all will not change the City name and state name and finally our Country Name as well, whatever it may be changing the name is good ambitious in respect of those who sacrificed for this lovely nation, but doesn’t make any sense till d proper health care facility organised for poor people.
Here I Had been mentioned very clearly lower middle class and poor people need badly health care service 100 % free of cost, at present, if anybody sick fever, cold, minor infection and injuries manageable from their end, but as per the major health matter considered, Example, if any body have problem like by pass surgery, kidney problem, cancer. God knows most of them will give up the hand, because they can not afford the financial cost for this surgery, incase if some of them arrange d surgery cost also, either they will sale their house, land or get d loan, In Fact their full lifetime will be struck to re pay d loan amount.
Can we expect some major surgery will be arranged for poor people @ free of cost along with changing d name .then we can say our deputy speaker and CT RAVI done Something for the sake of poor people along with changing the name, isn’t it then your great work will be Appreciated .otherwise time will come very soon to realize VVVVI just a temporary flavour just P will be a permanent Flavour.

Although I support renaming cities that existed prior to the arrival of british, renaming hospitals that are an inherent part of our history and not present before the arrival of british amounts to being insensitive towards the history. They are an important landmark of Mangalore and it would be best if they are untouched. People like Yogish Bhat if are interested in honoring Ranga Rao and Abakka, why not emulate Wenlock and Lady Goschen and create history? Answer is obvious: Renaming is easy, building hospitals with a model that is sustainable is extremely difficult and amounts to an effort of a life time.

K.R.Rao might have done much social works to the society. But why change the name of the hospiatl? Just because he has a 'RAO' tag in his name? Pilikula is named 'Karantha'.Try to keep many more names of the so-called upper caste people.Kick out these useless creatures from the planet. Then the world will be beautiful. It is better to preserve the old name.

These pseudo-nationalist are only known for corruption, renaming ceromony why not rename the party as Brasta Janara party and last not least there are some streets in red light area in Mumbai that still have British names why not rename them.

Wenlock hospital if i am right was named after some british collector/general and that is History. One must not try to change it as it may cause confusion and lot of unnecessory expenditure which could be used to improve the existing facilities to the poor. The circle near these hospitals or any other road /circle could be renamed as a fitting tribute to Rani Abakka and K.R.R

Now this is silliness and outlandish idea. Janakulena vote bodandda towel patond nattule marayre..inchina burus kelasa malpuna agatya ijji.

You change the name of these 2 oldest Mangalore hospitals but will be remembered by people including me with their same golden names.

Mangalore became Mangaluru but till today tulu speaking people including the picturised politicians call it as "KUDLA".

Jai Ho Wenlock and Lady Goschen hospital names.

I recommend Mr Yogish Bhat to rename all english names to our local personalities, Tulu/Kannada names. We need to preserve our culture, language, history etc. Please rename pumpwell, ladyhill, gentshill, morgans gate etc etc.

Very good move.. Please go ahead... It will be great honor for Ranga Rao and Rani Abbakka.

Our Yogish Bhat is GEM in Public works.

Also there is a need to increase qualified staff in Wenlock hospital. Many students come here for practice and misguide patients & their family. Hope Mr Bhat looks into it.
