Muscat: Fun day out at MCCP Annual Cricket Tournament

Muscat, Jan 28: The Mangalorean Catholic Center of the Parish, Sts Peter and Paul Church – Ruwi successfully organized its Annual Cricket Tournament of 21st year at Muscat Sports Club Grounds, Al Wadi Al Kabir recently for its members under the leadership of president Lawrence Alva, VP-sports and finance Ajith Waldar and sports secretary Loveline Rego, with unity and hard work of all other EC members in a spectacular and memorable way.

The entire event was categorised as follows:

Gents – Std 10th and above

Ladies – Std 10th and above

Std 6th to 10th Std - ( boys/ girls )

Std 1st to 5th Std – Hit the wicket

KG - 1 to 1st Std – Hit the wicket

All the arrangements were well organized by the EC committee to drive the activities of the event. The registration started at 9 am and registration counter was managed by Philip D’ Souza (Internal Auditor), Valentina Rodrigues (Secretary, Community Services) with the help of Dolly Gomes and Anita Lobo.

Breakfast was served at 9am with Kesari Bath, Coffee, Tea under the supervision of Dolphy Frank, honorary treasure of the Committee. As always, he was completely dedicated to provide the best refreshment.

In his usual self, Lawrence Alva, president MCCP, was conscious about maintaining the time/schedule, due to which, the opening ceremony started at sharp 11.00am. The program began with brief explanation by anchor Ajith Walder, about the tournament, which, all the gents, ladies and children were awaiting. Ajith Walder, is an extremely talented gentleman, who has earned repute and status as a sportsman par excellence. Having participated in and won several field and track events over the years, a role perfect to exhibit his talent and aptitude, as he had also served as the sports Secretary in the Executive Committee of the
MCCP in the year 2008.

Frederick Castelino, who is a dedicated Eucharistic Minister, and Spiritual Secretary of the committee, sought the blessings of Almighty God and Mother Mary to implore their blessings on the tournament’s success.

After this, welcome speech was given by Lawrence Alva, MCCP Precident. Alva, who is a professional trainer, has a God gifted nature of blending with people of all age groups and different cultures and this has contributed to his successful career. Well organized, disciplined and focused in his work, leads the team by example to deliver desired results within the set time lines. He expressed in his speech that Participation is more important than winning whereas the loser always has option to go ahead and compete again.

The chief guest of the ceremony was Vincent Machado who was present with his wife Prescilla Machado.

Introduction of Vincent Machado was given by Sonia Martis, general secretary. Vincent Machado was welcomed by Sonia Martis presenting the flower bouquet. Machado, who is working as Deputy Managing Director with Saud Bahwan Automotive LLC, and also a keen follower of cricket, has been the active supporter of MCCP since its inception.

Vincent Machado, in his speech, expressed that he was lucky to be in Oman for the last 40 years and witnessing this day.

Later, the program was taken over by Suraj Rebello and Dolly Gomes. Whole tournament was handled by them by effective coordination.

Men’s Category:

Under Men’s category, 8 teams were formed.

The captain of the teams were Prem Colaco, Ivan Moras, Philip DSouza, Edward Mendonsa, Sharon Alwa, Rony Lobo, Lancy Lobo, John Gonzalvis.

In the children's group of KG1 to 5th std, around 75 children participated enthusiastically in the Hit the wicket game. Later, all children were given away goody bags.

Umpires Hemanth and Gervin, scorer Henry Rodrigues were honoured by the president Lawrence Alva for their support. Suraj and Dolly also were honoured by the Lawrence Alva for their tremendous control and handling of the whole event. Veteran commentator Brian and Comedian Peter who kept the audience alive throughout the tournament were also honoured by the Lawrence Alva.

The prize distribution ceremony was held after the tournament, at 6.30pm.

Winners of the cookery competition were given prizes by Sharmila D’silva, editor of the column ‘Kuznanthlem Pokvan’ which provides new recipes, house hold tips etc. The prizes for the same were sponsored by Samuel D’silva and fly. Suraj Rebello expressed thanks on behalf of MCCP for their selfless effort.

Winners of November 2012 competition were Lavina Prasanna (non-veg category), Sonia Martis (for dessert) and winner of December 2012 competition was Nirmala Goveas for Kusvar.

Winners and runner up of children (6th std to 10th std boys and girls) category were distributed with prizes by Donald Pinto.

Winners and runner up of ladies category were distributed with prizes by Stanley Fernandis.

Winners and runner up of men's category were distributed with prizes by Suraj Rebello.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Loveline Rego, secretary of sports committee.He expressed his gratitude to all those who made this enchanting tournament, successful in 2013 and also to all MCCP members who came and participated in the event with a great spirit.

The lunch was sponsored by Vincent Machado and fly.
