Bangalore: Relief for Naveen Soorinje - state govt decides to revoke charges

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jan 31: In a huge relief to journalist Naveen Soorinje who had been arrested in the home stay attack case, the government has decided to revoke all cases against him.

The decision was taken at a state cabinet meeting held on Thursday January 31.

Soorinje has been lodged in Mangalore jail since his arrest on November 7 in a flash operation by the Kankanady police.

Naveen Soorinje had been arrested for recording the July 28, 2012 home stay attack on video for his channel and broadcasting it.

He was booked on the same charges as the rest of the accused in the home stay attack. The high court had denied him bail.

The cabinet's decision was announced by law minister Suresh Kumar at Vidhana Soudha here.

"The cabinet has decided to drop all charges against Soorinje," Suresh Kumar told reporters.

It may be recalled that earlier this month, home minister R Ashok had promised to drop charges against Soorinje after journalists in Bangalore had gone on a hunger strike demanding his release.

With this, Soorinje is expected to be released from jail soon.

A group of Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists had assaulted a group of boys and girls at a home stay at Padil in Mangalore on July 28, 2012. Soorinje and a TV cameraman were among the 44 accused in the case. Including Soorinje and the cameraman, 37 have been arrested in the case so far, and all have been denied bail.

It is easy to give a big list of countries practising press freedom. But again Ismail Perinje you must remember that press freedom cant be ive. Writers or those who speak or write should not be forced not to criticize certain gods of a particular community or a particular caste by intimimidation as is being done now. What you say. We cannot say freedom of press applies only on issues and situations that suits us. In India one can get away critisizing the gods of the majority religion but not vice versa. Then the freedom of press is conveniently forgotten.

I just wrote my response to what i felt about the Ice cream parlour attack the day before ,a nd bought your name as a reminder of our civil duties to see that some one should not get jailed for covering an incident neither an SP transferred for supporting the right cause .
First let me congratulate you on your release and the very fact that you can circulate your thoughts and self freely ...
I hope the situation you were put in has given you lots of time for introspection and you look at this as an opportunity to be a thorough professional journalist and leverage on the platform that by virtue of self tribulations has come your way ...
If A small place like Mangalore can have someone like you to be a champion of the truth over a life span you would have helped a lot of people .

    All the best ...

Mr Soorinje, Let this be a reminder that you just as any of us have a moral responsibility which surpasses your professional responsibility to intervene/report such incidents to the Police immediately and help mitigate the impact.

Hope this was a eye opener for all media personel, remember it can be one of your own relatives the next time who could be victim of harassment at the hands of goons ..
