Puttur: Medicine from coconut petiole – Rashmi hogs international limelight

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Feb 5: Rashmi Parvati, daughter of Ravishankar K, a farmer from Nekkila village in the taluk, has been chosen to participate in the international science projects competition being held at Houston in USA. This 17-year-old’s unique medicinal research has brought her this distinguished honour.

Rashmi, presently a second PU student in Vivekananda PU College here, has several laurels to her credit. She had obtained second rank in SSLC examination, and her research culminating in preparing anti-dandruff shampoo by using medicinal herbs, had brought her national level recognition. She had secured several state and national level awards during her participation in science camps. She had presented five scientific projects during the last three years in the IREES national competitions.

Rashmi gets this rare recognition for a scientific procedure of separating a unique salt from the ash obtained by burning coconut petiole. This salt extract has proved to be one of the best medicines for several skin diseases. Her project competed with other entries at the national level, before being chosen for the international honour.

Rashmi is one among the four students chosen from all over India to participate in the said competition, and the lone entry from Karnataka. Her research paper will be presented at the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Advancement Project Olympiad being held on May 8 in USA.

Ravishankar said his daughter’s research paper on miraculous remedy for skin diseases from the extracts of coconut petiole ash, prepared under the guidance of Shankar Bhat Badanaje, who himself has created a niche for himself because of agro researches, has been picked for this competition.

Rashmi aspires to be a scientist in future. Her interests include classical music. She has cleared junior level examination of Carnatic music with distinction.

Congratulations to Kum. Rashmi for achieving great heights in such young age. When I came to know of her Houston meet, I had an opportunity to meet her with her parents and younger brother when I went to Puttur on 12th Jan this year. She had two files with her full of appreciation letters and certificates. There was not even a small amount of ego in her approach. She is very soft spoken. I was stunned to hear that all her expenses to Houston and back shall be spent by her own and till now no govt agencies have come forward to sponsor her trip and expenses. We can't expect govt to help to anyone who brings fame for our motherland - which I need not elaborate in this page. I sincerely thank Mr Sham Bhat for sponsoring her return ticket to Houston. It is very kind of many like minded people in UAE to contribute to her for the expenses of forthcoming Houston trip. She is scientist now itself, and any kind of appreciation either monetary or otherwise will be a great service to our motherland. She needs monetary help to test her new found items as labs demand huge money for testing. Till now the family spent large part of their own income out of small agricultural land. I hope more people will come forward so that this Scientist willnot have to think twice for new ideas and testing. She has her ambition to go for B.Sc then basic sceince and full fledged scientist. So let all of join her in achieving her ambition and thus serve our motherland.

This youngster is a pride of India. God Bless Rashmi. She is using a God given and nature made product for medicinal purpose using her amazing intellect. Priase worthy!!
My naturopath doctor(an American), constantly talks about the benefits of coconut and coconut oil. One day she offered me a bottle of coconut oil. I thanked her and politely revealed that we grow coconut at my parents place in India. She was surprised to hear that I do not use coconut oil in cooking. She continued to tell that it is the conspiracy theory generated by some corporations that brought the cholestrol scare and made people avoid coconut oil and coconut in their food. Since then I cook all my curries with adequate coconut and use coconut oil generously for hair treatment.
Rashmi's efforts to draw the attention to benefits of coconut will make a huge impact on world stage regardless of how far she reaches in the Competition. She is a WINNER!!

Wish you all the best for your future. Kindly be prepared with all the data/results and consequent arguments in favor of your findings. At the end of the day, it is the utility of this new finding that is important. Most importantly please note that if you succeed (I am sure you will) in convincing the international audience at large, you would have created a market for a product for which raw materials grows primarily in coastal areas. Also considering patenting to secure the invention.

If you wish, US is the best place to continue your research. Universities will find the sources to fund your project. Anyway, invitation to attend the international science projects competition is the good beginning.
