Srinagar-Jammu highway remains closed for third day

Srinagar, Feb 6 (IANS): The Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for the third day Wednesday due to fresh snowfall and landslides, which left many vehicles stranded on the route.

A senior traffic police official told IANS: "Around 300 vehicles mostly trucks carrying essential supplies and oil tankers are stranded at some places on the highway. Weather permitting, road clearance operations would be started today (wednesday).

"If the highway is cleared for vehicular traffic only stranded ones would be allowed to move towards their destinations.

"No vehicle will be allowed to move from Jammu or Srinagar to undertake the journey Wednesday," the official added.

The road clearance operations by the border roads organization (BRO) personnel had to be suspended Tuesday because of fresh snowfall in the Bannihal sector and landslides in Panthal, Seri and Kela Morh areas of the highway.

The 300-km long highway is the only road link of the landlocked Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.

It is known as the supplies lifeline as all essentials of life are brought here through this highway.
