Mangalore, Feb 7: ‘2013 film festival’ with the theme ‘celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema’ was inaugurated at SDM college on Wednesday February 6.
The film festival was organized by Sahamatha film society, Mangalore in collaboration with SDM College of business management.
Sadanand Suvarna, drama and cinema director presided over the function while Dr Devraj K, principal, professor Phaniraj of MIT, Manipal, Professor K Krishna Moorthy, president of film society were the guests of honor.
Professor Phaniraj in his address said, "Indian cinema is unique when compared to the cinema of other countries as prominence is given to the narrative aspect. We should try to understand how social concepts are included in the India cinema". He also gave a brief synopsis on the movies screened during the film festival.
"Indian cinema was initiated by Dada Saheb Phalke through ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in which he showed how society should be", he stated. He also briefed on the difference between popular movies and commercial movies. The cinema’s narrative changes with time, he added.
Phaniraj asked people to see the difference on how women and youth are placed in Indian Cinema by directors like Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar. He asked students to see, enjoy the movie and mainly to learn from it.
In his presidential address, Sadananda Suvarna said, "the Sahamatha film society is trying to understand the film culture for the past 4 years. These days film making is a sort of money making business wherein they will try to put maximum ingredients of entertainment in order to yield high return".
"Popular stars, dance, rape scenes, songs are the few ingredients of the commercial movies which attracts people where good quality aspects are left behind", he added.
Through his film festival, we are showing off-beat movies so that the taste of people is changed, said Suvarna lauding the organizers of the fest.
The 2013 festival will be held from February 6 till February 7.
