Beltangady: Caste discrimination in school - students refuse food cooked by dalit

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Feb 8: In an incident that proves that we are yet to come out of inhuman practices and outdated beliefs, higher caste students studying in Surya government lower primary school in the taluk, on Thursday February 7, refused to eat lunch served to them under mid-day meal scheme of the government. Reason for the boycott was that a woman belonging to lower caste had prepared the food.

There was some disgruntlement over the appointment of Sumitra, a dalit by birth, as the cooking assistant under the mid-day meal programme for the school recently, even before she joined for duty.

On Thursday, she joined for duties, and took part in food preparation activities. The parents of the students, who came to know this, arrived at the school premises in the afternoon, to take their children home for lunch, refusing the food prepared at school.

The headmaster said that when he questioned the parents about this sudden turnaround, they informed him that lunch prepared by a dalit cannot be consumed by their children. Accordingly, out of 41, only seven students, who are dalits, consumed the mid-day meal.

President of the school development and monitoring committee (SDMC) as well as the headmaster of the school, who reviewed the situation arising out of the boycott, said they are helpless in the matter as the parents of the children did not pay heed to their pleas. They insisted that the appointment of Sumitra was lawful, and that they would seek guidance from higher officials. The statement came in spite of the fact that the two children of the SDMC president were among those who chose not to eat at the school.

Block education officer and local police sub inspector visited the school, and held talks with some parents. Higher officials are expected to visit the school on Friday in an effort to break the deadlock.

In the meanwhile, leaders of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Chandu L, Sanjeeva R, Shekhara Laila and others arrived at the school premises and discussed the issue with the teachers. It is gathered that parents of the students have promised to ensure that their children would consume food under the mid-day meal scheme on Friday.

This is for the broad minded people entering the narrow lane.
I was waiting for the results. I am a topper with 63 scores. Out of the 17 disagreed 4 have criticized my comment. The remaining 13 are the Jai Ho"s and their supporters.
Just see if any of the critics have scored more than 17.
The reply has been given by Mr. Ismail and Mr. Melwyn for the criticism.
All that I understand from the criticism is 'they are hurt'. It is nothing but an 'ECHO' or 'TIT for TAT'.If we hurt others we get hurt in return.Do we understand the depth of hurt of SUMITRA.If she is not meant to cook then what is she meant for? To remove the dirt?holasannu thegeyuvava holeyanalla. Holasannu Maaduvavanu holeyanu. God has given her the gifts given to other human beings. Then why the people are making discrimination in the name of cast and colour.Neither the dalith pours poison from her hands while cooking nor the upper class adds Amritha to the food cooked with her hands.
Coming to the point who are these parents who sowed the seeds of discrimination in these tender minds - The minorities, the congi,s,the Italians, the westerners, the secularists, definetly not.with the following sentences you have admitted
'Some morons dont define our country'
'Unfortunately there are people like this'
Who are these morons and people.
Are they not the babies of their
parent wing.So I am justified in mentioning the three letter word in my comment wherever applicable and relevant to the subject. Please advise your other supporters not to hurt other's feelings by repeating the same words in their comments irrelevent to the subject.

Ghandhiji was a great leader. The members of the scheduled casts and tribes were all landless labourers and adhivasies at Ghandijis time. The Christians and Muslims were a minority and mostly lived in towns and cities and villages but not forests. So, our smart chap Ghandiji saw this opportunity and renamed the whole of the dalith and adhivasi community as Harijans. Now, 'Hari' is a hindu God. So, technically the people that were daliths, adhivasis and ppl belonging to their own tribes, worshiping rain and sun and river and trees were now Hindus.
Many ppl here are confusing the SC and STs to be hindus. if it was not for our smart mans mass conversion they would stil be self sufficient SC and STs.

All human being are God's creation and the teaching of hatred is for our advantage.
The Aryan race that invaded India has created the Caste based social system. They created the highest position to the fair skinned invaders and marginalised the dark skinned local inhabitants. They destroyed a well established local Harappan civilisation that was bigger in extent than either Egypt-Sumeria's that was a literate civilization in communication with Sumeria. The Aryans were nomadic tribal peoples, barbarian invaders and they learned civilization from the people they conquered, in India, Iran and the Mediterranean. After the Aryan invasion, literacy was wiped out and did not reappear for another 1000 years or so when a new script was borrowed from outside.
The Aryan advent in India was, in fact, the arrival of barbarians into a region already highly organized into an empire based on a long established tradition of literate urban culture. The conquerors are seen to be less civilized than the conquered. The Rig Veda is one of the earliest known writings written in any Indo-European language and it is a collection of more than a thousand hymns written between 1200 & 900 BC by Aryans, who came from the Eurasian steppes to the north. In the Rig-Veda we see this conquest from the Aryan point of view alone: they are the heroes, and scant tribute is paid to their contemptible opponents, more skilled in the arts of peace than those of warfare. The despicable enemy Aryan, who deny Indra's supremacy in heaven and on earth, is referred to as the dasyus or dasas and have black complexions, no noses to speak of (anasa), they are 'of unintelligible speech' and above all they are infidels. They have no 'rites', they are 'indifferent to the gods', they 'follow strange ordinances' and they do not perform the Aryan sacrifices. They probably worship the phallus but they are wealthy with great stores of gold, they are formed into groups or states, and they live in fortified strongholds.

I have no doubt that this phenomenon is directly caused as a result of ancient British rule and western culture! It is not the students who refuse the food. Children are not born with animosity towards anyone. It is the parents who have refused to allow their children to consume it thereby contaminating their own children's mind in the process.

This type of discrimination among the children is totally unacceptable. Those who are giving poisonous lecture to the public about religion, come foreword and settle this matter

What type of parents are these? Parents are supposed to teach good things to their children, but here....... Shame on those parents. Dear parents whether the food prepared by dalith will not digest in your stomach. Grow up parents dont teach your children hateredness.

Dear parents do not see the caste of the cook. See their way of preparation and cleanliness. It need not be good food if prepared by a higher caste cook. One we have to remember all human beings are same and it is not our choice to take birth in a particular caste...!!!??? Hope our ill minded people will learn to accept this fact. When we go to a hotel do we ask the cooks caste...!!!????

Dalith women is not an human? The untouchability still persists in our society and indeed very unfortunate.SDMC President's sons are also included in refusing food cooked by Dalith women!!!! We can't asses the spirit of SDMC President and perhaps looses his position as SDMC Chief. Here need help of BD/RS and other Sanghparivars and the slogan of "NAVELLA HINDUNAVELLA ONDU" not augur well if DAliths are not included.

This incident clearly shows that this school's children are not deserving of this priviledge given by the Government under the mid day meal programme. Beggars cannot be chosers!

I REQUEST RSS PRACHARAKS TO GO THIS PLACE AND START SHAKAS AND TEACH VALUES OF HINDUSIM TO CHILDRENS AND THEIR PARENTS MIND, WE CANT BUILD NATION WITH THIS MENTALITY,
one side the ongoing Maha Kumbh here Thursday saw 100 former scavenging women, considered "untouchable" for centuries, take a holy dip at the Sangam here and share food with top Hindu seers.

Parents should not have put that dalit stuff into the innocent children's mind, educational places should be the last place to show differences.
Anyways let those who dont feel like eating not eat, I wont mind but don't change the cook.

Caste discrimination seed is sown by elders to children, therefore students refuse food cooked by dalit!
Discrimination on the basis of health & habits is understandable in food industry for spreading decease and influence on customers.
We speaks of prosperity, but when it comes to caste discrimination, we are still 100 years backward.
Sadly those trying to remove discrimination are being falsely accused or discouraged.
