Egypt blocks YouTube over anti-Islam film

Cairo, Feb 10 (IANS/RIA Novosti): A court in Cairo has ordered popular video sharing website YouTube to be blocked for hosting the controversial film "Innocence of Muslims", state media reported.

Judge Hassouna Tawfiq ordered the ministries of communication and investment to block YouTube, owned by Google, for a month after the website refused to remove the video clip which allegedly insults Prophet Mohammad, Egypt's MENA news agency reported.

A 14-minute trailer to "Innocence of Muslims" was originally posted on YouTube in June 2012. It attracted little attention until September, when portions of the trailer were broadcast by a TV network in Egypt.

The movie triggered widespread protests in the Muslim world. In Libya, it led to an attack on the US consulate that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other American embassy staff dead.
